Lake-Effect Thunderstorm with Graupel - October 20, 2018, Grand Rapids, Michigan
มุมมอง 2436 ปีที่แล้ว
A very strong upper-level cold pool (500 mb temps below -30C) provided very steep lapse rates and upward forcing from positive vorticity advection aloft. When this system picked up a small amount of additional moisture from the relatively warm waters of Lake Michigan (lake surface temperatures in the upper 50s F), a line of convection blossomed downwind. It's super rare to see convection strong...

30 Minutes of High Quality Thunder and Rain - September 2, 2018, Grand Rapids, Michigan
มุมมอง 5326 ปีที่แล้ว
This storm rolled in very slowly around 5 AM. Very good quality deep-pitched distant thunder was audible for a good 30 minutes before the onset of the heavy convective rain core. It's nice to be able to hear strong thunder with only a light rain in the background. Please turn up the headphones and enjoy! Beware, there are a few loud thunderclaps, especially concentrated around the 15 minute mar...

มุมมอง 1.1K6 ปีที่แล้ว
It seems these pop-up cells were being generated by a re-surging nocturnal southwesterly low-level jet. The slightly elevated jet was ramming up against the trailing outflow boundary left behind the squall line that passed through two hours earlier. I wonder if the thick mid/upper stratiform anvil cloud left behind the earlier MCS was inducing extra charge on the fresh updrafts as they rose thr...
Loud All-Night Storms Slam Western Michigan - August 26-27, 2018
มุมมอง 1016 ปีที่แล้ว
Areas along and north of I-96 finally got some solid drought relief, though maybe too much of a good thing at once. Muskegon County was particularly hard hit with both damaging wind gusts (from the initial squall line) and street flooding from the 3-5 inches of rain that fell overnight. I filmed the initial line from a quiet rural area as it rolled into eastern Muskegon county. I arrived back i...

Use headphones to hear the thunder... The louder thunderclaps are from occasional positive CGs jumping out of the storm. The camera has trouble capturing single-stroke flashes in daylight due to the faster shutter speed, but you can see part of a large bolt very faintly right at the 42 second mark (between the 5th and 6th bird chirp). It's easiest to see if your view is set to 1020p in full scr...

    Did it get warm at all for this to happen? We have experienced this in NJ also a few years ago. Cold weather thunderstorms. I'm 52 and don't remember these in winter ever.

    thunderstorms can happen any time of the year even in this video they're was still snow on the ground but the heavy rains were melting the snow and a strong cold front was moving in this was one of michigan's first thunderstorms of 2013 even though it is still rare for late january which marks the middle of winter doesn't mean anything if thunderstorms could even occur in the middle of winter.

      We're having another one right now - 23 Jan 2022. The Ch. 13 chief meteorologist just said on the news that it is only the 28th (24th?) in Grand Rapids on record since the 1800's. Makes me wonder when they happened over the years. I definitely remember the blizzard of 78, but I can't say I remember thunderstorms or tornadoes in Jan until the past decade or so. I'm a retired science teacher who taught weather in many of my 29 years in the classroom, so I know you often only see what you look for.

    Commenting 11/29/18 at 5am EST: Gorgeous thunderhead too, Marshall....wonder if this was the very same thunderhead that caused this gorgeous loud, early-seasoned Tstorm thus heard HERE? And a lovely sound at that TOO...Indeed...2012 was a very active early-Tstorm-season for much of the MidWest....and BTW....I last had thunder here on 11/6/18...((hence my distant CG-video)) and also...I have been videotaping ocean waves at the Beaver Tail Lighthouse...not sure if you get notifications of my newlymade video uploads...but I recommend my 11/16/18-BTL ocean waves' videos..as the waves were HUGE...especially on parts 2 and 3....

    • @marshallbs
      @marshallbs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thunder is from the storm that rolled through after midnight on 04/15/2012 (I have another video as well from the same storm). The image is from a cluster of thunderheads on the evening of 03/16/2012 (also have a video with cloud-to-air lightning coming out of this cluster of CB towers). We had an unusually early start to the t-storm season in 2012, but the summer that followed ended up being very dry like many in recent memory. Anyways, nice to hear from you! BTW.... there's a chance of thunder during the day tomorrow here in Michigan with an elevated warm front pushing up from the south. It will probably be very foggy with melting snow on the ground though. I don't know if I'll record anything. Depends if there's any good thunder when I'm not too busy. The same system might give you a chance of thunder the next day.

      I'll check out your wave video. We get waves on Lake Michigan, but nothing like the Atlantic. The most bothersome thing with storms blowing off Lake Michigan is the drifting sand. We have really rough quartz sand.

      So good to hear, Marshall...... Indeed..the winter, a very mild winter of 2011-12 at that..thanks to the El Nino-based phenomenon.....and thus the early start of the 2012-Tstorm season..and hence the incredible gorgeous sunset-lit thunderhead shown here on 3/16/12....which is something one normally sees in July..... TYSVM for the info on the date of the audiotaped thunder heard, from 4/15/12.... Anyways...as for my ocean-waves' video...I strongly recommend part 2 of my 11/16/18-Beaver Tail Video....huge waves...compared to a big lightning-storm video.... Hope you can see it and comment...while maybe a thunder chance for my area too...tomorrow SUN 12/2...I shall be ready.... Meanwhile.... much fondness....James

Also..awesome on the fall folliage and those thunderheads...normally a scene during HHH-weather....nice driveway with the basketball hoop too.... EVEN I loved basketball since I was at a ripe old age of nine..... heeeheee ...TYSVM for viewing part 1 and 2 of my 10/23/18-loud Tstorm videos..... Fondly...James

    • @marshallbs
      @marshallbs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was an amazing night for sure! There were visible flashes and/or audible rumbles for 9 hours straight ( 10pm Sunday to 7am Monday)! Initial squall line went through around 10.45 PM, then smaller scattered storms kept popping up north of the trailing outflow boundary, including the one that produced the barrage of big deafening loud crashes at about 1.30 AM. A second large line went through in a weakening state around 3.00 AM, then even more storms fired (mostly just off to the north) from about 4.30 AM through 7.00 AM. There was a repeat of nocturnal-LLJ / warm-frontal storms in the wee-hours of 9/2/18 with good quality booming thunder that lasted over an hour. There were also more (mostly distant) storms last night that I didn't record. Prior to the the 25th of August, only about 3.5 inches of rain had fallen since June 1st. We were in a moderate drought. Now close to 9 inches of rain has fallen with the multiple evening and overnight rounds of storms from the 25th through now. That's almost three times the amount that fell the entire rest of the summer prior to that point!

    Gorgeous storm-chasing and home video here, Marshall.....love all parts of it....big time..Nice nice CG and huge loud crackle by the basketball courts((with the baskets themselves having been chewed away))....seen at 07:02.... and nice ones while at home...seen at 07:27, 09:53, 10:46 and at 11:22..... indeed..with the persistant HHH-weather..those Tstorms you videotaped have taken the advantage of the steambathed HHH-weather by setting their own fury...and great for all all such avid-Tstorm-enthrallists....

    • @marshallbs
      @marshallbs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually didn't have to chase far to see this one. The abandoned basketball court is only about a mile from the house. I drive there every time a good storm is coming. It's the closest place with a good view of the sky. Right now I'm staying in my parents house and they live in the woods, so not much of a view for clouds or lightning. It's quiet though, so great for thunder audio recording. I'll be buying a house some time this fall though, hopefully one with a view right out the window.

    Beautiful, Marshall..on this one...So glad my other very good Tstorm-buddy, Tommythunderhead saw this too....as he, also Jason Sellon((from Raytown MO)) each have had some nice Tstorms uploaded in the past few weeks..Jason uploaded a biggggg Tstorm on 8/28/18....well worth viedwing too... Anyways...nice loud thundercrashes from the lightning shown at 00:39, 01:16, 01:39 and a 02:55..... As for me..I had a nice Tstorm on this date in 1984...9/3/84..Labor Day....audiotaped it only..but on 9/3/2000...I did videotape a big loud one and it is on THIS channel..but not in good pix quality.....Anyways...to you, to Tom and to Jason..happy videoing...Fondly...James

      tommythunderhead I think the 2 or 3 rumbles I recorded were the very end of the lightning on the eastern side of the system. The southwestern edge over parts of NY had more persistent active cells, but they hardly moved east at all. Shear was very weak.

      That band wasn't as impressive in my area. There was a shelf, but it wasn't as good as it was in your area. It kind of split in two with a few lighting strikes far to the northwest and southeast, but none close enough to hear any thunder. I was kind of disappointed so I just went in and ate dinner. I didn't have enough battery life left to keep the time-lapse going anyways.

    • @marshallbs

      These clouds/showers were ahead and well to the north of the center. I think the timing was a little better in Michigan. There were large breaks of sunshine in the morning that helped destabilize the atmosphere and make for some nice afternoon/evening buildups. The steadier rain near the center of the low held off until after dark, which was perfect.

      Yes, but this year it seems GR has missed out frequently. The brown unwatered lawns definitely attest to it. I get really tired of seeing storms dying as they reach Michigan. Wisconsin and Illinois always seem to do much better in terms of rain and storms.

      Here they keep promising heavy rain, then it doesn't materialize. We've had a lot of 10 minute afternoon downpours, but no real prolonged soakings. A lot of humidity but not a whole lot of rain this summer.

      Yea. We have had a few scattered storms in the afternoons, but they were too brief to provide relief for the dry conditions. I much prefer storms in the evening or at night, but there haven't been too many of those this year. The last good nighttime storm was June 15.
