Building a Bedroom in my Basement - Part 2

Wow, this took me a minute. Sorry about that. I ran into an issue that caused quite the delay, but we're here now! I finally finished (nearly) the new bedroom in my basement. I got a new fancy tool that helped cut down on drywall dust. I build and install all the trim as well as a couple doors. I also show of the newer style recessed lights that I'll be using. Its not 100% complete, but my daug...

The reason the standard batts didn't fit is because the concrete studs are wider than the 1.5 inches of the typical 2x4 stud that the insulation is designed for. That might be part of the reason Superior Walls recommend using spray foam.

Dang, I got duped too. $17k to replace heat pump with a variable communicating unit that I now know is twice the size it should be... I'll be going from a 3 ton variable to just a regular single speed 1.5 ton.

Honest candid & the proverbial new product pioneer complete with arrows in his back. Meanwhile I’m in the process of installing a new on-demand Laars Hydronic Boiler system for a 7 unit apartment bldg we own. The AO Smith 160K BTU on-demand HW system I installed (was quoted $4500 labor by HVAC guys), has been flawless for 7 years eliminating a 75gall HW tank that always ran out of HW.

The buffer tank in the basement, great idea must have for sure. Sound like you wrong fittings it happens where they are not taper threaded they are straight. Along with your system should be balanced as well. Each unit requires X GPM of water going through it. Having an unbalanced system will affect performance. Air to water source heat pumps are not new people have been installing them for years along with building their own. If system was designed and balanced from the beginning you more then likely would have been fine. Sorry for you bad luck. Hopefully the Mr cools work out for you. And are sized accordingly.

Rule #1 is never buy a "new product to the market", remember front load washers and dryers? Manufacturers have reduced R&D costs, letting the consumer work it out. Give it a few years to work out the problems.

For that much money i could have built this guy a sick Gas boiler system, with infloor heating combined witch with central forced air heating and air conditioning, an indirectly hated hot water tank with lifetime (99 year warranty). I would have used a cascade system for redundancy and if you are in a very cold climate glycol in the system is also recommended. It would have been much more economical to run then these heat pumps, much more reliable and its the most comfortable heating system you could get. Quiet radiant heat, good air quality and humidity (could ad humidifier or dehumidifier) and central ac.

Are the Mr Cool units still working? The connectors on the DIY units always leak, usually takes 1.5 to 2 years for enough refrigerant to leak for the error codes to start. I have 2 of the DIY units that were given to me. The guy finally got tired of Mr Cool sending boards, endless trouble shooting, and adding refrigerant, and had a Mitsubishi unit installed. When they do leak out have the HVAC guy come out, take off the connectors and put flares on the lines with a concentric flare tool. Or better yet just have them install a normal split system. A 4 ton 20 Seer Bosh IDS 2.0 is only $4k before markup. Of course now the house has been built without ducts, so that's a problem. It's always all the things you don't think of that bite you in the ass. The good news there are people that do this kind of stuff everyday that have the answers.

I worked on hydronic units for a number of years at a manufacturing plant. You are the very first person I have ever seen install them residentially. They are honestly kinda crap for residential for all the reasons you found. Their only advantage and why they are used in commercial is thermal capacity. Water has so much more thermal capacity then air and thus has a huge buffer when you have high thermal load cycles (Such as manufacturing).

We bought a house with drop ceiling throughout (previously used as an office) and had trouble deciding what to do. We’re gonna use this system for the living room and kitchen, but everywhere else is getting vinyl tiles. Ordered the Stratford model from ProCeilingTiles (KY company 🤘🏻) for about $1.50 sq/ft. Used the old fiber tiles to reinforce where our canless lights and vents are and it’s turned out really nice.

So did u calculate a reduction in the capacity needed for your Mr Cool units since ur using a SIPS envelope? We are doing a total sips build w 8 inch walls (R32) here in MT and we like the minisplits idea, but we are told we need less BTUs due to the envelopes thermal efficiency? We are also told Mr Cool units have many customer warranty/service horror stories.

Mineral wool is hydrophobic and won't absorb water if it gets wet. You don't need to maintain that gap at the bottom of the walls.

The major advantage of mineral will is that it doesn't really matter if it does get wet. Roxul even makes/made a "drainboard" product to act as a drainage plane and exterior insulation for basements, and their comfort board is often installed under slabs. I honestly think you may have done yourself a disservice by spraying in that foam. If it does flood, and water finds a crack in that foam, it may take forever to dry out. Mineral wool will not hold water, and will probably allow the cavity to dry quickly when you strip your baseboards and damaged drywall.

I appreciate your candor, I too have found a need to hang a somewhat heavy object on my superior foundation walls. I was going to go the snap toggle route but couldn't find any locally and didn't feel like waiting any longer. So I have in my pocket, some Tapcon screws, and that is how I am going to attempt to mount my 42" TV to the wall. Wish me well. I do wish Superior Walls were more forth coming about how they want home owners to work with their products in various real life situations. I've found it difficult to find information about how they prefer you do it, maybe I am not looking in the right areas. Again, thank you for sharing your troubles, you are not alone, the struggle is real.

Put a 2x6 block in between your floor joist and PT mud sill. You can place it to attack your corner and also be backing for your ceiling material. I’ve used superior walls in a handful of builds. Personally, I wouldn’t use them in my house, as a first option.

Hope there isnt a problem with your mr cool or else your gonna have to find a hvac company that will work on them. Cause most companies wont. After a few years you wont be able to get parts for them either. I have a 1st gen unit and inquired about getting a replacement evaporator coil for it and they told me they had no parts for the 1st gen units. I bought it 4.5 years ago. They actually told me they were surprised it was even still running.
