Cleaning your Co2 laser (ZnSe) lens.
มุมมอง 2.8K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Steve Walters / American Photonics explains cleaning your lens and shows different lens products. If you chose to use rubber/latex gloves make sure they are free of moisturizer and powder. It will not damage the lens if you need to soak it in alcohol or acetone to remove stubborn stains. If you are getting staining immediately address the air flow problem causing it.

I thought this would really speed up my alignment, but man, it's been a bit frustrating because you don't actually show how to do it. You're assuming that the viewer knows 90% of what you're talking about. I wouldn't have purchased this if I did. Do you have a better video or document other than the 1 in x 1 in piece of paper in 3 pt font that was in the package?

Thank you for a fantastic video, I have purchased your laser alignment tool. I had one question, you mentioned a Method at the end, I could not make out what you said, it sounded like Swartz Alignment Method. Would you be so kind as to give a link to this method you mentioned so I can finish up the alignment as you have and as you intend on finishing yours please ; ) Thank You again. This is a very handy tool. When I first set up my k40, mirror 1 was so out of alignment that the beam was leaving the box altogether and burning into my 3d printing table across the room.

I was a laser tech where we used 100 w and 250 w co2 lasers, we had air flow coming into the lens holder to always have positive pressure so no smoke came in. We maybe cleaned the lens once a month (with acetone). They ran 24hrs (some down time) 5 days a week. Our co2 came in trucks and was a constant feed type.

it is ok to move only the front or the back of the tube to make the tube alignment right. the tube does not need to be perfectly level the the machine or the earth.

I think your red dot is moving because the red dot pointer has a small amount of play, it's not completely secure within the laser head. And any bit of vibration effects it.

I bought mirrors and lens systems from you. I haven't had the time to use/change/really tune my extremely large OMTech laser. Are the mirrors you sell that much better than what my unit came with? I can't recall the model number. I know it was just about 10,000 usd when I purchased it.

  • @rillsleather

I have a strange issue where all the mirrors seem to be aligned, but only on three corners of my laser. Top left near and far, bottom left near and far and bottom right near and far all line up and hit the center of the head. But as soon as I move it to top right far, the beam travels a full 5mm to the left (looking at the head from the front of the machine) does this sound like a beam angle issue or more of a physical gantry skew?

I bought one of these around the time this video came out 3 years ago. It aligned my 60w laser better than I ever could the old way. Here I am looking at it again as i just upgraded to a monster 150w co2 laser and the proper alignment tool ordered. Don't buy the knock off poor quality OMTech version, get this one. It's worth it and if you have an issue with it the customer service is as good as you would expect from a company where the owner himself is instructing on how to use it.

Diode lasers are weak sauce compared to even a k40 co2 laser. Co2 laser can cut 5 to 10x faster.

Setting aside potential damage from the heat of a laser beam, what is the best way to _clean_ mirrors and laser lenses? Anytime one physically touches a lens, there is a risk of scratching the surface and / or damaging the lens / mirror coating. While alcohol seems to be the preferred solvent because it is readily and inexpensively available and does dissolve oily contaminants to which lasering debris (smoke, etc., from whatever is being lasered). Do vapors from acrylic, “laserable” resins in laminate (Formica), etc., degrade lens surfaces? Additionally, if the cotton swab does not absorb / adsorb everything, it will just smear oily contaminants over the surface of the lens, and if a small, harder piece of debris is between the cotton swab and the lens, the lens will get scratched. Smearing an oily substance over the surface of the glass just helps floating or airborne debris to adhere more easily to the lens surface. So, one solution is to use an ultrasonic bath to “pop off” the contaminants, especially oily substances, from the lens surface. Keep in mind the only thing physically touching the mirror or lens surface is liquid, water with a very small amount of some surfactant to ‘grab’ contaminates, particularly solid debris. So, my basic question, does / can ultrasonic cavitation (cleaning) damage lens coatings, that are generally electrostatically bonded to lens and mirrors? Some suggest using acetone; this is a pretty potent solvent. However, while it does clean lenses and mirrors better than alcohol, there is still the problem of rubbing the surface of lenses and mirrors with a cotton swab. Additionally, many lenses and mirrors are held in place with epoxy (or whatever) to lens tubes. Acetone would most certainly dissolve or degrade (most) bonding agents - and other non-metal components. So again, what is the best way to clean lenses and mirrors, particularly if the lens is embedded deep (2¾± inches) inside a ¾" lens tube? There is very little, as in almost no, wiggle room to clean the lens. Most laser machines now have their lenses “enclosed” in a metal tube or housing that precludes a lot of debris from getting on the lens in the first place, still the lenses and mirrors in these seemingly well sealed lens assemblies still get dirty.
