I managed to fall over the vinyl version of this many years ago - I still have it. The only Piano & Orchestra version of Rachmaninoff Prelude Op 3 No 2 in C Sharp minor, that I've ever found. at 7.35 An amazing piece of music. It's said it's the sound of a person buried alive & hitting the inside of the Coffin. Some Pianists will not play it out of Superstition.

Very well balanced and natural sounding. This is where tape really shines it seems, these large scale pieces with so many elements. I can't imagine the vinyl edition sounds as good as this. Thank you for sharing this piece of history.

The Six symohonies actually we have only four!

Some rolls, such as the one of Chopin Polonaise, were played slower than appropriate. The perforations for each piece were punctured as the recording spool pulled the paper at a constant speed. Hence, clunkiness, absence of smoothness and broken chords when the speed is set too low. In this case, the force applied to piano action felt weak, resulting in a muted tone and unexpressive sonic image. These are not features of a playing manner but defects of the mechanism or the lack of expertise from the recording technicians. I base my assumptions on a Soviet LP with Busoni rolls issued in 1968. The piano sounded richer there, although the LP was a mono recording.

Ahhh wonderful!!! This is the superior way to listen to this piece. I have it in Orange what I refer to as "Fire Angel" US pressing and you can hear the great performance but it is ultimately unsatisfying due to the pressing lacking dynamics and presence. This tape is the way to go, very quite also.

The Brahms Requiem takes up three sides of a two LP set, and record labels put various things on that fourth side, such as the Alto Rhapsody, but what Barenboim, Fischer-Dieskau, and DG did here--including the Four Serious Songs--is simply brilliant! The songs are a miniature German Requiem. Both are gorgeous settings of Bible versus in German (Martin Luther's translation) selected by Brahms to reflect what he was feeling after the loss of a loved one, Brahms' mother is the case of the Requiem and Clara Schumann in the case of the songs. The performances by Barenboim and Fischer-Dieskau are breathtaking as well.

Thank you so much for this! This recording is my favorite of the Brahms Requiem, and the Four Serious Songs are immaculate too. I have it on vinyl, but my turntable hasn't been setup in about a decade, so I haven't had a chance to hear it for so long. There appears to have been two releases on CD in Europe and never in the the US, what a shame.

I have an early sixties vinyl pressing of this recording that over time I have enjoyed more and more despite some flaws associated with early stereo. Obviously the reel to reel has more prominent tape hiss than most I have heard on this channel so far but as the tape went on there are some wonderful moments that sound very different to the very tubey sound of my copy, at times it sounds so crisp and ceases to sound like an old recording and you get a sense of being in Kingsway Hall. Definitely the one I have enjoyed the most so far!
