Applying to a Service Academy is complex and tedious. We remember it well.
As Academy grads, we've experienced the pain of applying to an Academy firsthand. Throughout the years, we've seen young people encounter the same problems we ourselves had.
We are passionate about helping young people because…
- Without expert guidance, most people feel overwhelmed and defeated before they even start.
- Getting accepted is a game-changer.

you said that an appointment has to be given out to each district. If I theoretically won my district, would USAFA’s application portal state that I have won my district? Or would it just remain the same as the others but will be notified later on that I have received an appointment? Moreover, is this basically called principal nomination or is it different
I just received a principle nomination and was wondering how much that increases my chances of getting an appointment? Thanks for the amazing and informative videos, they have been super helpful during the process!
What happened if i did take the GED insted of finish high school? Is the same?
So, I’m currently in MCJROTC, would being an action officer on several events look good?
Just got out of my interview. This video helped so much!!! I’ll come back with updates. Update: Got 2+ noms to usna, usafa , and West Point!
How did it go? What questions did you receive?
@@DYLANMarkey-u9c It went fantastic! Interviewed with my congressman and both senators and received at least two nominations to each of the three main academies with 3 to USNA. They asked very similar questions to the ones he mentions. It wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected. Be able to answer all the questions in this video with personal stories like he mentions and you’ll be good!
@@kokocrazy2590 WOW congrats! That is impressive.
@@DYLANMarkey-u9c thanks man! Just got word of my appointment to USNA today. Hoping to hear from the others soon. USAFA is my top choice
On the topic of letters of recommendation, you said that you should get letters from people who know you well. So does that mean you would advise against obtaining a letter of recommendation from a 4-star admiral who served with my dad? They both talk and text each other to this day. Also, my dad is 100% disabled from his 21 years in service, so would that also help me get in? I appreciate the feedback.
How does Latin look?
Spoken languages are preferred, so Latin and ASL are not as valuable.
My school offers French, asl, and Spanish, I am currently ahead in Spanish for my district I am taking Spanish three as a freshman and planning to take Spanish or AP Spanish four and five as a junior or a sophomore in a junior. I am also self studying Russian. Would it look good to have the Spanish and the Russian on my transcript?
I didn’t get to catch this live but I had a question about a leadership role. I am in MCJROTC, Varsity swim, and I will be in NHS and Spanish Honor Society, so I have leadership opportunities in all of those, but also I am hoping to obtain a management position at my job. Would that be considered a leadership position?
100% yes!
is 15 too young to start? I'm starting from basically scratch + homeschooled
Never too early to start! We start mentoring young people starting freshman year. academyendeavors.com/underclassman-package/
Can we get a rec from a biology teacher for the required teacher recs? What if you don’t take physics and you took chemistry in 10th grade?
If you’re a being recruited for a sport how much time should you dedicated to prepping for the CFA vs training for your sport?
If you're being recruited by the Academy for a sport, first verify that you are being "blue-chipped." Blue chip means that admissions puts your file in a different stack and you only need to meet the minimum requirements to be accepted, which is a rare privilege - all you'd need to do is pass the CFA. However, if the coach is merely talking to you but not offering a blue chip, then you want to max the CFA because you are competing for a spot with all the other applicants.
I ran cross country in the middle school, went from a 20 min mile to 8 min to 6:30. I was always told during the summer before freshman year that running long distances was the best way to get faster mile times. Are there any weight workouts that may help or is it just sprints and grinding them out?
Weight workouts are great to supplement sprints, but ensure you're doing lighter weight and higher reps, rather than trying to bulk.
Any core workouts that can help both my sit-ups and pull ups?
Plank and crossfit situps are good supplements to your situp and pullup workouts. But nothing can replace actually doing mock CFAs and training to the test.
I’m screwed, my sat score is not good, i really don’t think i have a chance.
apply. apply. apply. apply anyways. keep taking it even past jan 31 and then get on the phone with your admissions director and tell them it's your dream school and you kept taking it and you'd like to submit a new score. what's really more important to them is if you have college math (calculus), science (with lab), and college english courses.
I was wondering where you got the fail numbers because those aren’t found anywhere and when I asked my Allison officer he said those aren’t available and he doesn’t even have them.
They are conservative estimates based on experience. They are not the official minimums because only the Academies know those and they keep them close to the vest.
Hey AE! Do we look to get nominated before or after we get selected as a candidate?
My grandson, 13, has joined civil air patrol. He wants to fly helicopters. Iinm, he must be a warrant officer to obtain the position. But that's it, if he hangs in there....i know, bad pun😂 He's gonna make it, tho. Very eager, very smart.❤
Did they change the essays limits to 500? That’s what my application says
My son is going through this right now. He’s incredibly overwhelmed with essays. I sent him this clip.
Hello sir! I am a homeschooler who has been wanting to join USAFA for the last few years now. However, since I live in Virginia, I am not allowed to participate in public school sports. I am already helping out with just about everything I can in my church. Do you have any advice as to how I can boost the leadership side of my application? Thanks!
Try joining club sports
@@richard38618 I do a few races here and there to try to boost my athletic section of my application, however I’m not sure how much that helps.
Hi, fellow homeschooler here. I'm applying to all the service academies and just received an LOA from West Point. I'm from FL so they let homeschoolers participate in HS sports here but I understand it may be different in VA. Sports are definitely important to show athletic and leadership potential. I'd recommend finding something athletic that interests you, whether that be martial arts, triathlons, or swimming, and finding a club/team for that open to everyone. The main thing is showing that you are an active person capable of handling military life. Sports are important to show leadership as well, but if you have to join club teams, it may be harder to show that leadership prowess. Definitely be involved with Church, and look for other community service opportunities or clubs in your community that you can show this in. If you're a Junior this year, I 1000% recommend applying for Boys/Girl State. I know for a fact that West Point gives you major points for this as do the other Service Academies. At the end of the day, the Academies look at the Whole Person Multiple scale. Athletics are important, but your test scores, classes, extracurriculars, interviews, and CFA also have weight to them. Focus on doing all of these the best you can and you'll have a great shot at any Academy you may apply to. If you have any other questions I'd be glad to help you, I understand the struggle being a homeschooler and applying to the Service Academies and would love to share anything I can.
I have a question so do you want to be training other muscle groups while training for the cfa or do you have to stick to cfa until the day of the test??
Ideally, you focus on the CFA in prep for the CFA. Sometimes if you're on a sport, its unpreventable, because coaches require you to weightlift. But weightlifting usually doesn't help you with CFA - for example, doing bench press doesn't improve your pushups; it probably will hurt your score actually. Mimicking the CFA exercises is what helps you the most. But we find for most clients, they don't have a choice; they have to do both CFA prep and athletic team conditioning.
I would say Yes to finding others...as long as they are not competitors to you.
If the parent of the applicant served in the US Military and retired honorably, is that a Presidential nomination and how is that attained?
Yes, you are eligible for a Presidential nomination, and the details are in the applicant's portal. The form looks like this: www.academyadmissions.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/09_Reg_Military_Nom.pdf
This video and workout plan have been a great help for preparing my daughter for her upcoming CFA test. We have one big question about the basketball toss. She really likes the first way you show by starting down low and cradling the ball, then throwing more from the side. Our concern is that the instructions state that it must be an overhand throwing motion for this event. How certain are you that the first way of throwing will be acceptable? Just don’t want her to train one way and then have to throw it a different way on test day. Thank you!
Some Academies allow you to cradle it, and others do not. West Point and USAFA don't allow the cradle position, only the overhand. But USNA allows it, the last we heard. If this is incorrect, please let us know!
@@academyendeavors Yikes, well that's good to find out now as my daughter has a month to get this thing figured out before her USAFA CFA. Thanks for confirming.
Im your 1000th sub!
I'm a junior in high school who just recently became interested in the Naval and Airforce Academies, and I feel like my resume will be lagging. My school doesnt have JROTC, and I've never done Sea Cadets or Civil Air Patrol. I do a varsity sport, and a few clubs, along with being the founder and president of one sports related club. My grades are good, and I have a few leadership credentials, but I need alot more. Im not sure Im well equipped yet, and the clock is ticking. Any suggestions?
Hi! How are you doing with the process right now? I’m a junior in a similar situation and I’m not sure if it’s too late or not.
So far, I’ve opened my USAFA summer seminar application, and plan to open my USNA summer seminar application next month. I’ve also talked with my counselor at school about planning
What can we do if we don’t have access to varsity sports - does something like running marathons count?
I didn’t try as hard as I should have in high school but I am doing a lot better in college I just started my sophomore year if I had a mediocre high school gpa is it possible at all I still get accepted or nah?
That completely depends on how your college GPA looks and whether you took classes that mirror an Academy curriculum. Also depends on your SAT/ACT - standardized testing still matters in your case.
Do you need to be 17 years old to start the application?
No, you need to 17 by July 1st of the year you would enter the Academy: www.whitehouse.gov/service-academy-nominations/steps/#:~:text=A%20citizen%20of%20the%20United,the%20year%20you%20would%20enter.
I’m a senior in hs started my portal I have a SAT score of 960 and excel in all other parts of the SCS top 10% 6th/584 students 3.818 unweighted 4.95 weighted great in all 4 legs of the stool in various honors societies and but only currently am President of the Hispanic Honors society Im in the cross country team have taken Aerospace engineering courses all highschool and have held AP, Honors, and Cambridge classes since freshman year Im having great doubts wether to continue on this application no one in my district and highschool has ever gotten into the USAFA I have dedication but confidence is something that really low right now I come from a low income family where I need to know my choices my first choice was Aerospace engineering at UF but I really want to discipline myself I hold great leadership characteristics since I were little I need to know if I should continue with this application I already have everything ready to send my congressional district governor I was never in any jrotc or rotc at my HS I’ve been brushed off by chiefs and sargeants at my school someone who knows greatly let me know if I have a chance
Do they take international students?
Yes, they do, but its a totally different process for non-US citizens: www.academyadmissions.com/prepare/international/#:~:text=International%20students%20cannot%20apply%20directly,in%20the%20home%20country's%20military.
Would you say doing a leadership position in Civil air patrol, a swim club, and marching band is enough or should I pursue more leadership roles?
It depends on your grade. When you're young, you can get involved in more activities, but as you progress, you should be sharpening your focus to a few leadership roles. Quantity and quality both matter.
I’m an 8th grader, (out of shape) what’s your advice for someone like me?
Watch our CFA how to video here: th-cam.com/video/FsadSWCSuco/w-d-xo.html and our FREE CFA Workout Plan here: academyendeavors.com/cfa-workout-plan-download/
@@academyendeavors thanks
I'm a current HS sophomore and I want to get into the Naval Academy. I do band but I don't do any sports (though I am fit and workout regularly), does that significantly lower my chances? And if so, what would you recommend to compensate?
Yes, it would most likely lower your chances. We recommend getting involved in athletics, whether its a lower skill sport such as cross country or track, or even a non-school sport like martial arts. Athletic activities are scored separately from extracurricular activities, so having a low athletic activities score can lower your chances of an appointment. To take steps to compensate for these gaps, your leadership positions on non-athletic activities (student council, NHS, school clubs, robotics, etc) would need to be stronger than the average applicant, and the academics would also need to be stronger.
@@academyendeavors Thanks for the help.
what are some examples of commonly asked questions during a nomination interview?
Here's a few common questions that would get you started... 1. Why do you desire to attend a Service Academy? 2. What does integrity mean to you? 3. Tell me about a leadership role you had. 4. How do you manage your time? 5. Tell me about a time of adversity and what you learned.
Are your feet anchored (does someone hold them or are they hooked under something) or is it the candidate’s job to keep them in place?
Your feet are usually anchored by the administrator. The more secure the foot are anchored, the less effort the situps will be. The other option is if you can find a bleacher or hooks to put your feet under, but this is less common to find.
So, if you're a founder member of a JROTC athletics team, does that count as a sports team (It's called the raider team, its a nationwide AFJROTC team) or does it have to be a school sports team like football, basketball, or baseball?
Yes, Raiders counts as a sport! Non-school competitive sports such as martial arts count too.
West Point does not require a push up video this year fyi
True, this was just changed. Now its only pullup videos that are required!
Do you think being a lifeguard during the summer would count as a good thing for leadership? I was wondering since I am currently one and would like to know so I can make a plan for getting more leadership opportunities and which ones count.
Lifeguard is usually not a manager or supervisor role; it's more of an individual contributor role. But don't get discouraged; there are usually more leadership roles through school clubs, sports, or community organizations than there is for work in the high school years.
Will leadership programs or sea cadets help my resume? I’m going into 10th grade and want to become a naval officer.
Yes.
Is the application process different for college transfer students?
For college students, it's essentially the same process. A few differences are as follows: they will ask for your college transcripts; you can also ask your college professors for a recommendation, as well as your ROTC commander if you are in ROTC; most likely you won't receive a LOA in the fall because your first semester college transcripts won't be finalized until much later, so you're notification window will most likely be in the spring (Mar/Apr). You still need to apply for a nomination, do the CFA, pass DODMERB, etc.
Does it matter which branch of ROTC I come from? And do you recommend I join a sports team at my university?
Question at 38:00, when referring to districts, do you mean a school district or something else?
We are referring to your Congressional district. You can find out your Congressional district by going here: www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative
USNA grads can also commission as a Marine Officer, if not interested in being a Naval officer.
Would a HUD army JROTC be able to provide a USAFA nomination? Also thanks for all the information provided in this channel. You all are the best !
If the Army JROTC unit was an honor unit with distinction, then yes, you could. If not, then no, you could only get a JROTC nom to West Point.
Quick question, if I fail a 8 months before I would possibly be accepted there, would they just disqualify me from the application?
If you fail the CFA, most likely they will notify you and give you a deadline to submit a new score. If you submit a passing score before the deadline, then you would be qualified. Most Academies require the CFA to be submitted before Jan 31. If you fail the CFA and its still many months ahead of the deadline, then they usually give you a deadline of 30-90 days to submit a new score.
@@academyendeavors sounds good, thanks
@@academyendeavors So about that, it seems like the USAFA deadline is Nov. 30. It doesn't seem like they're extending the submission timeline for the fitness test. I'm not 100% sure though
I know this is very late to say this Should apply now? i got back to school on Aug 7 and I do JROTC in high school and i will be a junior this years I don't know what to do at the moment
Its certainly not too late to apply. The applications don't open until the summer of your rising Senior year.
Is taking only the SAT a poor decision or should i take both the ACT and SAT?
Taking both tests (or working with a professional tutor who will give you a diagnostic) is the only way to know for sure which test you're better at. Either take both, or get a tutor who can guide you to the best test for you. Here's a good infographic on the differences between the tests: collegeprep.uworld.com/act-vs-sat/
As of now I am still a U.S. national that was born in American Samoa but currently resides here in the states. Is it possible for me to get a nomination from there instead of getting it here in the states?
Yes, Federal Title 10 regulations allow the Delegate in Congress from American Samoa to grant Congressional nominations to Service Academies.
I had a counselor in high school (1970s) suggest to me that I should apply to the USAFA, after I told him I was enlisting in the Air Force. First time in my life I laughed at an adult. "Are you kidding?? Do you know what it takes to get in there??" I didn't have the classes, I didn't have the extracurricular activities.
So true, its a ridiculous amount of work! Worth it, but not the right fit for everyone.
I have no varsity sports as my school does not offer them, although I fence and sail at a club level. I have extremely strong academics and leadership although athletics is generally my weak point application wise. The last CFA I took was at NASS this year, and my scores were the following: BB Throw: 62’ Pullups: 15 Shuttle Run: 8.8 Pushups: 75 Situps: 85 Mile: 6’51” Where do you think I should most focus on improvement and should I retake the CFA again or are there other more important areas of my application I should focus on? Thanks!!
Solid score! You should take it again if you feel like any of the scores weren't the max you're capable of, as USNA likes to see improvement and will allow multiple attempts. If you finish taking it and didn't improve, you can tell your administrator afterward to hold off on submitting until you take it again.
Those are really good numbers no?
@@ahmedalzubaidy2689Well its passing, but as he said I have a gap in my athletics so hopefully getting higher scores would compensate! I retook it and got even better scores and am 3Qd with a nomination for USNA as of yesterday!!
