Grandpa used to cut thin slices off of copper pipe for the same purpose.

To make certain you have a copper penny then 1981 or older would be the choice. The 1982 pennies were minted in both bronze and copper-plated zinc and distinguishable, non destructively, only by weight with the copper-plated zinc variety weighing 2.5 grams and the original copper variety weighing 3.1 grams I am curious about what happens if the copper sandwich penny is used in the paint bottle... Using magnets to stick to the track killed slot car racing. Tuning and skill meant nothing.
