Sergei Prokofiev- "Montagues and Capulets" from "Romeo and Juliet" Op.75 - Josef Bulva
มุมมอง 5824 ปีที่แล้ว
Pianist- Josef Bulva Montagues and Capulets (also known as Dance of the Knights). The most famous piece of the series thrives on contrast between the lurid allegro pesante and the moderato tranquillo - entitled middle section, which introduces a moment of pause and contemplation into the crowing gestures of the two families at odds with each other. But only for a moment. Then again music of imp...
Sergei Prokofiev - “Minuet” from “Romeo and Juliet” Op.75 - Josef Bulva
มุมมอง 8194 ปีที่แล้ว
Pianist: Josef Bulva Through his percussive and fluid playing, Bulva brings this merry (and neglected) work to life. Upon hearing this piece, a listener may catch themselves dancing to the rhythm and humming the lyrical melodies for days to come.
Sergei Prokofiev - “Masquers” from Four Pieces from “Romeo and Juliet”, Op.75 - Josef Bulva
มุมมอง 3074 ปีที่แล้ว
In “Masquers”, Prokofiev appears to incorporate gymnastics with pianoforte playing resulting in textures that are truly unique. However, the trampling rhythms and acrobatics in the left hand could sound effortless to the casual listener. One may even be fooled into believing that the piece is simple to perform, yet it is of course through Bulva’s virtuosity that this is the case. To achieve suc...
Sergei Prokofiev - “Folk Dance” from “Romeo and Juliet”, Op.75 - Josef Bulva
มุมมอง 5195 ปีที่แล้ว
Pianist: Josef Bulva The “Folk Dance” opens with a repetition of playful melodies performed with a strong and dancelike rhythmic drive. Pedal point-like creations and a catchy beat in the bassline suggest a pastoral peace, which is repeatedly interrupted by curt intermediate sections and hefty leaps in chords. Two fervid final chords close the piece.
Martinů - Piano Sonata No.1 - Josef Bulva
มุมมอง 2.9K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Pianist: Josef Bulva At the late age of 64 Bohuslav Martinů composed his first and only piano sonata in the late autumn of 1954 in Nice within a period of three weeks. Although the three-movement sonata conforms more or less to the classic sonata configuration, it imparts to the unbiased listener a diversity of fantastic visions and wide-reaching meditations. It is a massive work with nearly vi...
Liszt - Transcendental Etude No.5 "Feux Follets" - Josef Bulva
มุมมอง 1.1K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Pianist: Josef Bulva When discussing the Transcendental etudes by Franz Liszt, Hector Berlioz once remarked “there is unfortunately little hope of hearing this music. Liszt wrote it for himself and nobody else in the world should be as bold as to claim he could even begin to play it”. “Feux Follets”, or the “Will-O’-the-Wisps, is certainly one of the most technically challenging etudes by Liszt...
Mozart Piano Sonata No.17 B flat major - Josef Bulva
มุมมอง 7055 ปีที่แล้ว
Pianist - Josef Bulva The Mozart scholar Alfred Einstein saw in this work the absolute Mozart piano sonata. In its masterfully achieved formal equilibrium, it radiates a quiet serenity and a cheerfully light-hearted mood. Only in the adagio does a cautious minor-key darkening become perceptible. The concluding allegro sounds merry and relaxed, bringing a note of gentle humour. Bulva’s infallibl...
Beethoven, 'Appassionata' Piano Sonata Op.57 in F minor
มุมมอง 7825 ปีที่แล้ว
Pianist - Josef Bulva Beethoven’s glorious ‘Apassionata’ executed with the uttermost sensitivity and virtuosity. Before composing ‘Hammerklavier’, Beethoven himself considered the ‘Apassionata’ to be the greatest of his sonatas. The first movement is rich with passionate outbursts of a romantic nature. Towards the end, we reach a glorious climax full of rolling arpeggios concluded by the thunde...
Chopin Polonaise No.5 in F-sharp minor, Op.44 - Josef Bulva
มุมมอง 3385 ปีที่แล้ว
Pianist - Josef Bulva Chopin, a lifelong patriot in exile, was driven by the memories of his homeland and, as a result, gained much of his artistic inspiration from homesickness. In the 5th polonaise we hear tragic storms of emotion followed by the unmistakable polonaise rhythm resembling a drum roll. The rising trills in the left hand convey a sense of endless longing and defeat while the tech...
Franz Liszt - Trancendental Etude No.11 Harmonies Du Soir Josef Bulva
มุมมอง 1.2K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Pianist - Josef Bulva At an early age, Liszt was able to master the technical aspects of the piano. As a result, he could spend a lifetime developing an interpretive understanding of piano repertoire. This highly advanced understanding allowed Liszt to give birth to pieces such as Harmonies Du Soir, which exhibit a highly descriptive style. However, his manuscript can only tell us so much about...
Rachmaninoff Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43 - Josef Bulva
มุมมอง 20K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Pianist- Josef Bulva Countless composers have made variations on Paganini’s 24th caprice, however Rachmaninoff’s are like no other. In the opening of the Rhapsody, Bulva percussively hits the lower register generating the resonance of the Russian bells Rachmaninoff would have heard during his youth. Each variation is extremely innovative and different from the last, at variation two Rachmaninof...

Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 - Josef Bulva
มุมมอง 1.5K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Pianist: Josef Bulva Franz Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 has been loved by audiences for over a century. For a pianist it requires not only technical bravura, but also an extremely high extra-musical understanding. During the opening of the lassan, we can hear Bulva play some notes more harshly than one would expect, however this is not mistake. Bulva is invoking the Hungarian folk tradition ...

THIS is the authoritative version of the Rhapsody in my opinion. Thank you Mr. Bulva for such a clean and perfect performance.

I had to dig through old hard drives to find an mp3 of this particular version from 1994. It was always my favorite version, gentle and slow in the right spots. Patient. Building. So many other versions are choppy and fast. I was a college student around the time of 1999 to 2004 and slept more nights in my car than I did in a bed and this was my usual lullaby to calm the outside noises. Perfect version.

I've heard this piece so many times and I never tire of it. Seeing the score while listening is daunting thinking about playing it. Many section I can do but some just seem impossible! I know if I work through them slowly with the right fingerings I could probably do it. It might take me years!! Just seems that way. God bless Rachmaninoff.

The first Franz Liszt album I got as a kid was a Josef Bulva collection and I consider myself lucky to have not only stumbled across by accident a favorite composer but also a masterful performer. This is my first time hearing his performance of La Campanella and my god his performance is so.... crisp, you feel each individual note instead of them blurring together, I don't know how he does it

The consistency in tempo is what really sets this pianist apart from the rest. At 7:03, most would speed up a ton to create a sense of chaos, but then they'd all slow down for the agitato at 7:18 which loses the march feeling achieved in the moments prior. Bulva maintains the tempo of the piece from start to finish. It's a shame that critics saw his choice as a "lack of romanticism" rather than an attempt to maintain the march quality that the rest of the Scherzi have.
