Thank you. Like most other things, it’s increasingly difficult to find movies these days that are comparable to those from Ford and Hawks.
The greatest director of all time in my book.

Here is a perfect example of HER : in the alphabetical book of reviews :Fellini "Juliet of the Spirits" 1966 . "A woman, whose husband is cheating on her: has fantasies that take place on the sets of old MGM musicals". The End. LOL . That's it. Next page " Just Tell Me What You Want". 1980. FLOP movie , Unfunny comedy with Alan King and Natalie Wood as a battling couple in NYC, Siskel & Ebert HATED IT. So Pauline goes ON and ON and ON about this movie - she did not seem to LIKE or HATE it , but felt the need to give it a THOROUGH long review. LOL. Like 200 words or more . I'll bet you reading this never even HEARD of this movie . LOL

Howard Hawks comes across as polite and affable in this interview. Unlike John Ford in the few interviews I've seen of him, Hawks doesn't appear surly.

The first part of the fight is almost shot for shot exactly like the fight scene in DARKER THAN AMBER (1970).

She wrote this response up in one of her early books, but hearing it - especially the way she eviscerates that first letter - is even more delicious. Happy birthday, Pauline. (in a few days, anyway)

An antifeminist woman revealed for the sycophant she is. Kael's sharpness was essential and true.
Marvelous. But,, to tell the truth, Hawks made one western without John Wayne: The Big Sky, 1952, with Kirk Douglas.

Pauline Kael was the writer who made me appreciate criticism as an art form in itself...I wrote her a letter once in the '80s (c/o The New Yorker) and she actually wrote me back!
Don MacLaren, I also wrote her letters in 1987 and again in 1991 and she wrote me back both times. I went to see her at 2 book signing appearances as well as at a sold out speaking engagement at the Herbst Theater in San Francisco. In her letter to me from '91, she said she coudn't respond to all my questions on movies, since Parkisnsons had stiffened her hands. She did write "Have you seen Before Sunrise or Matilda? Not great, but good."
