    My thing with vintage patterns is usually the terms used which is different from modern ones. Patterns older than the 80s is difficult for me to understand.

    • @KnittingPatternista
      @KnittingPatternista 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree the terms can be different such a p for plain ie. Stocking stitch and not p for purl, so it is like you have to be bilingual. Whoever thought you would need Google translate for a knitting pattern. But please feel free to knit what you enjoy as it is our hobby and there are so many lovely modern designs.

      I haven't written it up but you may be able to find the vintage one on reselling sites. Ravelry has some polo shirt patterns which may be adapted. Petite knit's Maud tee is similar except it is a raglan styling rather than set in sleeves.

    I love these snarky comments! It must have been frustrating for early knitters who had a limited pattern selection and then struggled to find anything they liked or that worked and that suited them. We are so lucky now with endless online help and support and patterns. I do kind of want to try these now to see what the fuss is about. I hope you can do a more I depth video on this!

    Hello! This video is exactly up my alley, as it were, as I’m a gentleman of the gothy persuasion so naturally I’m drawn to spooky knits. I’m currently getting into historical/vintage fashion, and thus far I’ve started on sewing a pair of 1890’s men’s trousers (well, I’ve pinned the pattern pieces to the fabric, cutting is still too scary). Knit-wise, I’d like to make a version of a Fair Isle style pullover but perhaps with a slightly more somber colour scheme than usual. You’ve got a lovely voice and I thank you for sharing your knowledge as well as the lovely patterns and projects made from them!

    • @KnittingPatternista
      @KnittingPatternista 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Glad you found this spooky fun. There were quite a few men's fair Isle patterns in the 1930s and 40s which may inspire you. Some darker moody yarn could look amazing with your vintage trousers.

    This is great! I don't seem to have any interest in modern knits. Although my vintage period of choice is the 80s, so the hurdles aren't quite as big, but they're still there, and I'll still need to size most of them up.

    Beautiful. I, personally, would knit with a solid color and replace the stripes by purling rows. I love to knit with Merino wool since I’m allergic to 100% wool. I had to wear gloves to knit a tam. My finger tips felt😢 raw knitting with Shetland wool so I’m taking break from the project. In order to wear it I’m going to need to line the ribbing!

    • @KnittingPatternista
      @KnittingPatternista 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great idea switching stripe for purl row. Less ends to weave in. :) Your allergy sounds painful but good on you continuing to knit with wool you were allergic too. Hope you can find a synthetic fleece to line your tam so you can wear it.

    Hello...I have just found your wonderful podcast....I do collect Stitchcraft magazines from the 30's, 40's and a few from the 50's. I myself used to buy Stitchcraft in the 70's so I have a few of those. Reading through Stitchcraft connects me somehow with my Mother who was a great knitter too....I imagine how her life must have been during the War with so much loss, terror and deprivation and yet still knitting these intricate woollies. I think that some of my baby cardigans came from Stitchcraft magazines. So for me they mean so much more than a few dusty old paper pages....and I do occasionally embroider or knit the patterns.

    Well done on this piece! I'm currently procrastinating grading up a vintage pattern for myself. I find them so much harder to read than modern patterns as they assume so much and explain so little! It looks like you've got some rowing out on your top. When you've switched from knitting in the round to flat the tension can change and it will impact your row gauge. It happens to me all the time. (I knit tighter than I purl. I've found going down half a needle size for my purl rows usually helps even out the gauge and make the transition look more seamless.) 😀

    I used to love it when my Aunt had bought one of those special waxed boxes of tri-colour ice cream - my mother would never have bought such a thing! Your top turned out really well - it looks great on you! I love knitting pieced patterns, they seem to go by so quickly with all the little sections. As soon as I have freed my needles from the rib I cast on the next piece rib section, and knit a few rows now and then so that when the first piece is finished I am ready to begin with the knitting on the second piece and go on like this - it works a bit like stripes in terms of motivation. I occasionally knit a modern top-down jersey and hate the unwieldiness of it. I have a well-fitting cardigan that I use as a template for knitting piece garments, I have found this more successful than trying to measure myself, and less depressing!! I have never heard of any knit/crochet patterns, although, before I learned to knit a few years ago I often mended commercially knit garment cuffs by picking up and crocheting a new cuff. Lots of interesting stitches on your shawl. Did you crochet the black-edge cusion/blanket behind you? It's so retro looking! Thanks, this was an enjoyable watch. ps. presumably, you have seen the Sirdar pattern archive? They made some spectacular patterns.

My aunties were great examples of knitters too so great memories all round. Great idea to have ribbing finished ready for next piece. Yes both sirdar and the knitting and crochet guild have great archives. The blanket is one of my makes too. Joy of scraps in a stained glass effect.

    Thank you so much, what fabulous patterns! ❤️ I'm fairly new to crochet and have been looking for gold thread that doesn't rip my fingers to shreds. I happened upon Twilleys Goldfingering metalised yarn being sold cheaply (I'm in Australia) so started looking for information on it - and found your wonderful video! Do you know if the metalised version is as nice as the lovely yarns in your video? Maybe I'm completely clueless but I'd love to make a gold shawl with it, or even a summer blanket. Thanking you in advance.

    • @KnittingPatternista
      @KnittingPatternista ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Virginia, a gold shawl or blanket sounds luxe. The Twilleys goldfingering is recommended to be used with a 2.25mm hook so that would be quite a commitment if not held with another yarn but would be stunning. I personally go for softer yarns near my throat and to knit or crochet with so maybe holding it with a softer golden coloured yarn could give you the gold flash whilst creating a better crocheting experience but everyone's tolerance is different. If you have a Spotlight near you, they normally stock Milford's metallic yarn that you can feel to decide if you like the feel to both crochet and wear. I believe it is fairly similar. You can always look on yarnsub to see for other substitutions too. I know you don't get all the same commercial brands but the Hobbi brand here has a metallico range which has a dark gold in a thicker wool which would crochet up faster and has a lovely sheen so it is worth thinking about the weight of yarn you like to work with as well as the texture. Happy yarn hunting and enjoy crocheting. Tag the knitting patternista on Instagram as I would love to see what you make.

    So what's up with all the skinny models with tiny waist lines and limited pattern sizes? Certainly not everyone met those physical standards! Any explanation out there?

      There were vintage knitting patterns for larger sizes. They were often called outsized or matronly if you want to look for them but generally the knitter was expected to resize patterns from the smaller bust size based on their guage swatch. I would note that the models often didn't have skinny waists but the photos were doctored to give that impression. I have covered this is some of my videos as I don't fit most vintage patterns either.

    That was so well presented and some of those older patterns are gorgeous 😊

    Greetings from California! I adore your videos. The contents is fascinating, and the cadence of your voice is like music. But to quibble, wasn’t Elsa Lanchester the Bride of Frankenstein?

      Lisa sorry just saw second part of your message. You are correct Elsa played the monster's bride. Valerie played Henry Frankenstein's wife that Frankenstein kidnaps to get them to create his monster bride. The picture of the monster bride with streak of white is Elsa as that was a more spooky. Sorry for the mislead.

      @@KnittingPatternista In truth, you were entirely correct, because if we’re being strictly accurate, Frankenstein is the name of the doctor, and not the creature.
