Installation of auto-mate in Mitsubishi Challenger PB & PC / Triton MN
This video provides a brief overview of the process to install auto-mate into the Mitsubishi Challenger PB, PC and Triton MN (2009-2015).
auto-mate is a fully automatic torque converter lockup kit that reduces transmission temperatures when towing and improves fuel economy. Not only does it lockup the torque converter, but it also changes the gears. It's like a whole new DRIVE mode of the transmission optimised for towing heavy loads.
LIMP MODE SOLVED! auto-mate also solves the known problem where the vehicle will go into LIMP Mode when tackling long hills or sustained sand driving. Unlike other vehicles which just display a transmission high temperature warning lamp, the Challenger/Triton MN instead goes straight into LIMP Mode without illuminating the warning lamp, causing a loss of power, often at the worst possible moment!
auto-mate in these models provide exceptional fuel savings with some customers reporting 20%+
auto-mate does all of this without needing to change the programming of the factory transmission ECU.

I have a question If your MR triton doesn't have a factory difflock fitted what's involved in installing one. Obtaining parts from a wreckers. Is it just the switch and the difflock or does the ecu need to be replaced?
This kit is a transmission lockup kit and is not related to a diff lock. It is fully electronic. Its main purpose is to ensure the torque converter lockup clutch is used more often to keep the transmission cooler and provide more responsiveness with a sportier feel.
Nice thanks for the overview. I just ordered a 76 2.8 auto, will be considering a lockup kit. One query though, does it effect the vehicle warranty?
In terms of warranty, it is no different to fitting any aftermarket accessory. If Toyota believes it is the cause of a problem they may not honour the warranty for that repair. For example, fitting an after-market suspension lift may invalidate a CV joint or drive shaft failure under warranty. Similarly for remapping the engine to get more power. For normal servicing, some people just hide the unit. The OBD2 connector can be disconnected and tucked away in the transmission tunnel, and the LED/switch can be easily removed and coiled up out of the way within a minute. When power to the control unit is removed by disconnecting the OBD2 plug, the vehicle reverts to standard operation.
@@marshallmuller485 Thank you for your response. Curious as to the wires you cut and joined the kit to. They have no effect on the vehicle reverting back to standard operation when the kit is removed? Another question. Is a lockup kit worth while on a vehicle that will be doing very little/or almost no towing?
@@justinreeders2541 The kit is designed to be robust. It will revert to factory operation when it is switched or powered off (eg. unplugging the OBD2 connector). There is also a link plug for the harness which intercepts the solenoid wiring to put the wiring back to factory if the controller is removed. Yes, it will provide benefits when not towing. When cruising there is a slight gain in fuel economy. In manual mode (incl. 4L) it will lockup the torque converter from 2nd gear, which will keep the transmission cool when working the car hard at slow speeds (e. sand driving). Lockup in manual mode also transforms the driving experience as it essentially turns the car into a clutchless manual, directing all power to the wheels (no slip - no power loss and great responsiveness).
@@mm4x492 Thank you very much for the explanation. I can understand the benefits of locking the converter up, but still don't quite understand how the kit works. No need to worry about that now, but I'll probably need to give you guys a call when I get closer to deciding.

Gday mate , just had my 13 nw remapped , gets great torque for towing my 2750kg van . Will automate pro mess with my remap or just the transmission logics ?
Just the transmission logic. It will not affect the engine retune or the transmission ECU at all. auto-matePRO is the product of chioice if you have a retuned engine. It was designed specifically to work with Pajero's with remapped engines to provide extra tuning parameters to reduce vibration which can occur in some cars due to the extra torque from the engine.
Hi mate do use make these for the 4jj3 Dmax yet ? Worse automatic I’ve ever driven the transmission is very busy and chews diesel like it’s going out of fashion ! One of these would be great

Dose it work on the Mitsubishi Shogun in the uk
We have customers around Europe who have not experienced any issues. In any case, our 30 day satisfaction guarantee covers incompatibility issues.
The Shogun is a Pajero just under another name because of the meaning of Pajero in Spanish (In Norway it is the name of a small fish, and that is where they got the name from )
I like this, fancy throttle controller.
Not quite a throttle controller ;-) rather it adds new modes to the transmission to make the car more responsive and also keep transmission temperatures lower.

great video mate shows it working really well, definitely keen on putting one in my Fortuner only question I've got is do you have to be in manual mode or does it work if just left in drive rather then manual select Aswell
Thanks. The fortuner work sa bit differently than the 70 series. Yes, the kit works in DRIVE, SPORT, and in 4L. In D it will lockup (when conditions are right) at 70+ kph. Below this speed you use SPORT mode to force the gearbox into the right gear to allow lockup. eg. use S4 for 60 kph, or S3 for 40 kph. It will lockup down to 2nd gear (25 kph). Also in 4L when in SPORT mode. It includes all protections to make it fool-proof, and it properly integrates wiith the operation of the vehicle. There is another video on our TH-cam channel you should watch instead of this one for the Fortuner. th-cam.com/play/PLQLimNF5jLl6QHooj-X-gHrIFf-OYxwrp.html

Sahara prefacelift A pillar install is different, but not covered
There are slight variations between the models over the years, but the principle is the same. Some require the rubber trim to be pulled outwards before clipping the led in place. The LED/switch will fit onto every model.
Does it have to goto a obd2?
Yes, the lockup controller gets power and CANBus data from the OBD2 port. The kit comes with a OBD2 Y-splitter cable so other devices can still be used.
@@mm4x492 I have a scan gauge 2 will it still be okay?
@@udiedby2h It will be ok, but turn off the lockup kit before using the scangauge to do diagnostics, like reading ECU error codes. The ScanGauge has a bug which can incorrectly read messages from the lockup kit and present false codes.
@@mm4x492 do I have to connect the scan gauge 2 via wires to the controller or not? Sorry about all the questions.
@@udiedby2h The scangauge simply connects to the OBD2 Y-splitter cable provided with the kit. An OBD2 Y-splitter goes into the vehicles, then one end of the Y cable goes to the lockup kit, the other end to the scan gauge.
Fantastic kits. Look forward to fitting one to a new 70 series Marshall

Hi Marshall would heat from the transmission cause coolant temps to raise higher then normal?
Hi Shaun, I have replied to your email you send us with additional information than this comment. Yes, we have seen reductions in the engine temperature when travelling at the same speed with the torque converter (TC) locked vs unlocked. With the TC locked, the engine doesn't need to work quite as hard to maintain the same speed. The heat generated by the TC is lost energy to the wheels, and the heat removed by the transmission cooler also passes into the radiator. We've also observed lower intake temperatures.Cheers Marshall
Do you have an install video for the challenger/triton?
Please refer to the installation video by Denmonkey into his Pajero which provides a good idea of how the kit is installed in the Challenger/Triton. See the Pajero playlist.

Is this the same for the pb challenger?
Similar, except for the location of the transmission ECU, which in the PB is located above the driver's left foot, and only one wire needs to be cut to control the torque converter solenoid.
excellent stuff. i wish i could afford it. wonder why my converter doesnt lock up at all. always slips
Fuel economy??
There are many factors when it comes to fuel economy including driving style, modifications/weight, towing and road conditions. Customers have reported 10% fuel savings, with some experiencing up to 15-20%! Head over to the website to read the reviews and Marshall's blog articles.
Is the unit plug and play? Not keen on hacking up the factory harness and would like to be able to unplug it for diagnostics if I'm having problems in the middle of nowhere
We’ve come from a remote touring background know how important keeping your car running is, so fault tolerance has been designed in. Whilst it does required 2 wires to be cut in order to control the lockup solenoid, the rest is plug n play, and everything can be easily bypassed back to factory operation. brilliant features, looks super handy to have while towing and just driving around. are there plans to make an auto-mate for the ns pajero? or is the automate compatible with the 07 model? if so sign me up for one asap
Hi Dan, we do have a kit available for the '07 NS Pajero called lockup-mate. It's not quite as advanced as auto-mate (shown in the video), as lockup-mate doesn't control the gear changes. With lockup-mate you'll get best results when used in SPORT mode with the driver changing gears at the right times to maintain conditions suitable to lockup.
@@mm4x492 ok awesome, is there any plans to make an auto-mate for the ns at all?

Do you have "installers" in each state yet.? Great product.
You can head over to our website under Support/Installation to see customer-recommended installers near you.
Hi there Do you still have the module for the Challenger? I wonder if this affects reliability of the transmission. As far as I can understand, it should make the transmission last longer (If used correctly). What I don't understand though is why on earth this transmissions where designed with so much torque converter slippage. I just bought a challenger, and I am astonished by how much it slips. Why does it come like that from the factory? Was the designer drunk while creating the specs? 😂😂
Hi Daniel, yes, they are still available. Good questions! Heat is the killer of transmissions, and the lockup kit avoids transmissions from overheating. In the Challenger (and Triton equivalent) it also avoids the transmission going into LIMP mode when climbing long hills or driving in sand. The reason there's such a high slip torque converter is so it can claim to tow 3t. It needs the high slip to get 3t off the line with the 2.5L engine. With the lockup kit (auto-mate) removing the high slip, we've had reports of 20%+ better fuel economy.
Is this same reason the torque figure for the automatic 2.5 litre reduced from 400 nm in the manuals to 350nm? Just to avoid slipping the loose torque converter even more. If it's not slipping nearly as much with the automate would that mean it would be safe to get that extra 50nm back?
Is there a kit available for the 2.8ltr Prado, 6 speed?
Hi Kalza, We currently support the 3.0ltr diesel, but will be supporting the 2.8. You can subscribe at our website with your vehicle details to be notified when it's released. mm4x4.com.au

Thanks Marshall. I love my automate pro for towing in my NT Pajero. Tossing up whether to purchase an Ultragauge also. Yours is mounted close to the RH A pillar - which mounting did you use please?
Thanks Chris. I used the horizontal mount which is available from the UltraGauge store when ordering.
@@mm4x492 Thanks!
can I fit this on a 2012 Prado V6 petrol auto please say yes.....
Yes we can. It’s just a matter of having one made available to us to test with. If you live in Adelaide, email us at enquiries@mm4x4.com.au and we can discuss this further.
Being a manual tragic, and struggling to find many available, I’m considering an auto with the lockup pro. How would you rate the driving experience compared to a manual? I’ve owned autos before and detest the vagueness and hesitation when accelerating, and lack of engine braking. My understanding is this would largely solve that?
When the lockup clutch is engaged it behaves exactly like a manual. Using the SPORT shift you can also change up and down gears like in a clutchless manual. For example, it stays locked when coasting into a corner and then as you power out again it behaves exactly like a manual, for direct and controlled power delivery. With the Pajero, in high range (2H,4H,4Hlc) it needs to be in D when under 30kph, so it wont be locked all the time. But when it is, it's just like a manual. I like the 'manual feel', so I have our auto-matePRO turned on all the time.
Does the ultragauge have the AT temp from factory or is it an add on
Hi Mobydick, the ultra gauge needs to be programmed to display the transmission sensors, and only the UltraGauge MX version has this programming capability. We have instructions at our website on how to configure the UltraGauge and ScanGauge OBD2 devices. www.mm4x4.com.au/helpful-documents-links
How do you choose which unit to use? And how does it go when 4x4 in engaged, i mainly do beach driving ,with some towing on n offroad, cheers
Please contact us via the website with you phone number and we can help you choose the best unit for you. When in low range 4WD, the kit will lockup in 2nd gear and above when in SPORT shift mode, which provides excellent temperature reduction.
Nice je valide
Have a nw jero.... But dont understand what this product does
Hi Richard, When working the transmission hard (eg towing, driving in sand, or climbing very steep hill is low range 4WD) it can overheat. Heat is a major cause of expensive transmission rebuilds. Our transmission lockup kit provides temperature protection by optimising the use of the torque converter clutch to prevent heat buildup, and whilst doing so, it also saves 10+% fuel.
Very interesting. Is this doable on a 2010 td auto 4spd Hilux
Possibly. It’s just a matter of having one made available to us for development. We are based in Adelaide so if you live locally please email us at enquiries@mm4x4.com.au and we can discuss this further.
@@mm4x492 unfortunately W.A mate . But this system is miles ahead of other kits on the market. I think with a bit more involved in installation and slightly higher cost bang for buck you make a much better product with all its auto functions.

Reading through the comments, I picked up a response stating the fact that you currently don't offer the product for the petrol models. A whole bunch of us in Africa and the gulf states use our petrol powered pajeros for towing long-haul, commuting and wandering off the beaten track. It would have been nice to have this product, especially considering the fuel savings, it would pay for itself in no time. Is it even vaguely possible that you can develop a version of the petrol models?
Hi Isaac, we are constantly support new models, and the petrol may be supported in the future. The petrols are also very popular in the middle east. You can subscribe at our website to receive email notifications of new model releases.
So standard does the pajero never activate lock up?
Yes, the factory ECU will activate lockup but only when above 90kph in 4th gear, or around 100kph in 5th but only under very light load. Essentially only when touring on the highway. Our lockup-kits are designed to activate the lockup clutch in a wider variety of driving situations, such as hilly roads and mountain climbs, and in low range 4WD.
@@mm4x492 thanks for the reply, is there a negative effect of being locked up under more conditions? Seems strange that factory doesn’t utilise it more? It seems like a great product by the way. Just trying to research it a bit more
