The Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway (S&DJR, also known as the S&D, S&DR or SDJR), was an English railway line jointly owned by the Midland Railway (MR) and the London and South Western Railway (LSWR) that grew to connect Bath (in north-east Somerset) and Bournemouth (then in Hampshire; now in south-east Dorset)
Brought under joint ownership in 1876, the S&DJR was used for freight and local passenger traffic over the Mendip Hills, and for weekend holiday traffic to Bournemouth. Criticised as the "Slow and Dirty" or the "Slow and Doubtful", it closed in 1966 as part of the Beeching axe despite protests from the local community.

Absolutely fantastic work. Would anyone know where I could purchase the map on the left. Seems quite hard tracking it down. Kind regards,
It's available free on Wikimedia
Brilliant!
Amazing
Great video. Can you do West drayton to Uxbridge next, please 🙏
Anybody got film of the actual line working? Be great to see.
Thanks James, excellent subject yet again..
I love these videos. It’s useful when you know the area as I do in this case.
Mate, Windsor Hill Tunnel is now open.
What a clever and fantastic piece of work! Thank you.
Cheers Ronald! The project is nearly finished will have a complete journey to Bath by Christmas! Feel free to subscribe plenty of journeys to explore on the channel! 🚂
A very interesting and different take concerning the S & D. This film again, as those before, showing why people loved this railway. The past is a foreign country, they do things better there.
Fantastic!
...so that's where Midsomer lies!
Just to add my thanks. Nostangia gone mad!
Like the videos mate. But sorry this one needed explanation. Your 1910 view had the train half standing in a residential area and across roads. I can see tracks north. But there’s no explanation as to if there was a separate station ? There also looks a faint outline of a tunnel on the 1910 version as well.
Was this originally double track all the way ?
Just discovered your channel this very morning James, and have been watching many of your wonderful videos as I'm getting a few moments between the household chores! Both my wife and I are totally captivated by what you have done here, which seems totally unique. We then discover you write your own music to accompany the films! My wife was a musician and teacher and she's most impressed, as am I. Fantastic!
Thanks Dave! I've got a long to do list with the many disused lines around the country! Feel free to subscribe! 😁 🚂
Incredible! What a fantastic film. In every sense. Many, many thanks.
Bloody amazing thank you very much I'm 58 years old lived on the island all my life and it's amazing to look at this hope you do some more thank you very much what a lovely place the Isle of Wight was so short-sighted
A brilliant piece of work. Very moving.
Cheers Colin! I hope to reach Bath by Christmas!
Great animation and production as always. Lots of time and research needed to produce this short video. Hope more people like and comment so you get the visability you deservo on this platform.
I remember seeing the closed (but still very impressive) Broadstone Station from the road bridge in about 1970. The long footbridge linking its four platforms was iconic, but its lack of canopies gave it an eerie feel.
This is so heartbreakingly beautiful. The magnificent Charlton Viaduct was just about to be traversed at the end of the video.
Will go over it in part 4! 🚂 Getting closer and closer to Bath! 🛁
Wonderful, as always. 😊
Another goodie. Just amazing how, seemingly not long ago, I traversed this route but suppose thats how age dictates time. Thanks for your time and effort and would love to see how you make these as seems very clever keeping it all inbalance.
The Bearskin & ITVX adverts ran for so long [without the "Skip" option being offered] that I actually forgot what the video was that I was meant to be watching .... starting to hate TH-cam with a vengeance.
Excellent! Love This!❤
I love these videos so much even if they are bittersweet and I lament the loss of our beautiful branch lines 😞I particularly like your music James - do you sell it or have it somewhere to download or even listen too?
I don't sell it I do however put it up for members of my main channel time travel artist to listen to. 🎶
Tremendous as usual. Fascinating and so well put together. My favourite railway line of all time..
Beilliant work!Thank you!
Gosh your videos are so interesting and it must take ages to edit this for us .Cheers 🚂
Thanks Ian! I enjoy making these so that compensates me somewhat for the hours spent putting them together!
Thanks!
Thank you James great video and really lovely music.
Thanks!
Thanks James as always, also like the change in music. Just a quick question, what are those markings that are level with the train on the modern view at 2:57? Farmer showing off on his tractor perhaps.
Perhaps? Just noticed them myself!
Look forward to the next in this series. Like the change in music recently and mustn't forget the many photographers you rightly credit each time. I forgot about the reversing into Templecombe.
A brilliant video. One of my local lines. The Monsal trail is a must if you are visiting the Peak District
I think it's amazing how little known this railway is. I had a vague notion that it existed but only read up on it about 10 years ago - and I'm an enthusiast and now over 60! Sorry for the gripe, but can't help feeling that if it had been in London we'd all be quite aware of it. That was great! Thanks!
Excellent video. One small fault. The engine whistle used is from a Mogul type engine that never appeared in the east of England and were used in the West Country. The engines on this line were B17s and latterly Britannias. Both had high-pitched whistles.
I thought you had missed out Furze Platt (the first station out of Maidenhead) but I have just discovered it only opened in 1937.
Why was it ever closed?
My late father used to work on this line as a Plate Layer from time to time many moons ago ,and we as youngsters managed to get a ride in the Guards van from Elm to Upwell then walk back to Wisbech the good old days.
You have done an excellent job of making this video.
Cheers Kevin plenty more in the pipeline feel free to subscribe! 😃
I have a massive soft-spot for the S&D. The Swift and Delightful or, to its detractors, the Slow and Dirty. My father, older brother and l were on the last train to Bournemouth.
Thanks!
Fantastic movie making skills. Can't wait for the rest of the S&DJR. I cycle this section and from Blandford to Stur. Newton regularly.
th-cam.com/video/mijtj6CyvWM/w-d-xo.html thanks I did start from the other end but now I want to finish the route in its entirety! 🚂
Sublime
Hi James, excellent as usual this is a part of our beautiful country I am not familiar with and although urban development has gobbled up a lot of the country since the 1888 map was created it still looks rather nice. Looking forward to part 2. On another subject I would like to "buy you a coffee" but cant figure out how to do it, apparently there should be a donate button but I cant find it, any help would be very useful fellow fans.
I think it's just above the comments section? (Below the video there are several buttons like share remix and one called thanks $) i think it's the thanks button for reference. Cheers! ☕
I can't think of anything that I don't love about these videos - other than there being so few featuring lines in my part of the country.
Any suggestions welcome 👍
