    From looking into it a bit the helical antenna would be very directional and is supposed to have higher bandwidth, but for some reason this one doesn't have higher bandwidth. Is there any comparison with a patch antenna? It seems you could make a patch antenna from a cut up beer can that would have coverage for the whole sky with less gain, but would be much more directional in the right way than using the dual band or 1/4 wave antennas recommended on the tinygs site.

    • @EngineerMeThis
      @EngineerMeThis 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey, I think you might be mixing a normal direction helical antenna and a QFH helical antenna. A Normal helical (which is another video on my channel ) is directional and very narrow beam. The QFH antenna has two coils in either 0.75 or 1 wavelength. This is a very omnidirectional antenna and nor comparable to a patch or normal helical antenna

    • @GuyMasong1
      @GuyMasong1 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@EngineerMeThis I made your antenna design but ended up resonant at 402mhz with narrow bandwidth. It is improving reception on TinyGS and is still picking up some satellites on 433 but is doing best on the 400 mhz

    • @EngineerMeThis
      @EngineerMeThis หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GuyMasong1 Thanx for trying it out, I agree it tends to be much narrower then expected. but on the freq side, thats by design. if you have a wide spectrum to cover like 400 to 440mhz you want to be on the low side and being on the high side means you wont get any of the 400mhz freq. the issue as you stated is the narrow nature.. im testing new designs with better efficiency and wider band. so stay tuned.

  • @kurtdobson

    I would be interested in the actual tested gain of the antenna. It occurs to me that the material you're using for the form (PVC, or maybe ABS) is a dielectric and since it's in the middle of the field, could effect the performance.

    • @EngineerMeThis
      @EngineerMeThis 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Hey. This material was PetG. and the contact surface on the cover coil itself was limited. Performance is great with real work tests and has 100mhz usable band. with regards to the dielectric. Yes it has impact but it can be accounted for to a certain extend. This specific antenna has a biggest impact on the impedance matching part but minimal on the coil it self. I'm yet todo gain testing but would be happy to assist if you have the equipment and time todo so

  • @kurtdobson
    @kurtdobson 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Very interesting. I have a need for the same type of antenna for Meshtastic, US 915mHz. I used Matlab's Antenna Designer software which has the ability to optimize the design parameters for gain, bandwidth, etc. I was able to get a gain of 11.1 dBi. The parameters are as follows: Radius 0.069493 Width 0.00278 Turns 3 Spacing 0.09731 WindingDirection CCW FeedStubHeight 0.001 GroundPlaneRadius 0.20852 Tilt 0 TiltAxis [1 0 0] Matlab provides an S(1,1) plot, as well as complex impedance, but does not show how to match to a 50 ohm Tx source. Any pointers would be helpful. I think your construction methods are very clever. Having a VNA to validate the design is helpful, have a Siglent 1032x standing by.

    That 1/4" Tubing should be "Ridged Enough" to hold it's shape.. No need for the 3D Frame other than to help form the Elements perfectly... (Cut Slots) top and Bottom to Slip your Formed elements out after forming. (only thing) you will have to (Cut) and solder the ends at the bottom as well when installed into it's final Mast.. (Nice Idea) this QFH should perform the best for the TinyGS 👍 It will have a Perfect Radiation Pattern for Satellite RX. I use one like this for NOAA at 137 MHz (Very happy with it)

    • @EngineerMeThis
      @EngineerMeThis 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree with everything you saying, just remember the point of this project was to dielectrically load the elements with plastic to reduce the overall antenna size. So if I remove the plastix the antenna will no longer resonant at 400mhz. But your points are still valid and I'm working on version 3 so will def be taken into consideration
