I'll help you understand your customers, build profitable products, and write useful books.
I've been running various businesses for 13 years. My first was a scalable startup that went through YC (summer 07), had some big customers, and raised from top-tier investors before quietly dying in year four.
Since then, I've realized that I'm less motivated by scale and prefer working on smaller projects with one or two friends. I now optimize for for a mix of freedom and reliability, treating entrepreneurship as a long-term career without all the drama or craziness. I hit full financial independence via passive income about four years ago, at 32, but I quite enjoy making stuff, so I've kept at it.
I'm mainly known for my approach to doing custdev and sales as an introverted techie (The Mom Test). I've also written books about education design (The Workshop Survival Guide) and using a modern product design process to create more reliably successful nonfiction (Write Useful Books).

You are my soul animal mate. My life would be so much easier if I could love corporate people - but I can not. I love SME, NGO and Social Servive folks. I guess I got to tailor my services for them.
So so good. April's infectious energy just uplifts the talk. Also great content - found the 'IBM playbook' v useful....also where she says she wrote half a book so it could be finished in a flight. Very useful for any aspiring non-fiction author who wants to write 'useful books'.
This is so useful, Rob. Thanks for sharing!
This is very true of issues of trust and hiring to proof an idea rather than to test it. I got hired to explore ideas and got fired quickly because I suggested that some business ideas might not work and they all require validation.
Crazy value in this!! Thank you
Useful! Useful! Useful!
Maybe try a new title....He sold a million copies. So can you!
This was really helpful
I am a double major at Harding University. I'm currently writing a book. I'm majoring in Bible/ministry & and psychology, and I will say this video is worth watching.
Strange how this video only has this many views.
thank you so much 🥰🥰

I love this video Rob thanks so much for breaking this down.
Thanks Rob.
Thank you Rob.
Hey Rob! Good to see you back :-) Did you re-join your community? I thought I read on the site you were gone for a while...
I'm fully back into the authors' community and useful books (currently in the midst of teaching this Modern Author course), but my other personal projects will stay on pause for a while longer. I'm trying to keep my workdays to <4 hours while my son is young, which is enough to focus on one big project, but not enough to support all of the side projects I used to also be juggling. (When I do get back to my personal site, I'll also probably make it more of a traditional blog than the quasi-community it used to be, just to keep the time cost more manageable. That being said, I've been having a ton of fun with the video course for the authors' group, so maybe I'll eventually manage to put out something similar for a few of my other half-finished works-in-progress.)
@@robfitzpatrick Cool! Love that your protecting the time with your son. I have 2 myself. Being a dad is the best 🙂I'm also a screenwriter and have found all your books helpful for developing fiction material as well. The key is that the "useful" screenplay elicts an explosive emotional reaction and so story development can solve for that. This also includes NOT asking Mom if she loves the new movie idea, but asking her which comparable films she watches and why. Really appreciate you 🙌🏻
I love hearing that -- so cool when these things are able to hop across industries. Thanks for letting me know :)
Just bought your book on Amazon
I think the book should’ve been called. “April is obviously awesome.” I loved this podcast so much! I truly appreciate the straight talk and how down to earth you are April. I’m old enough to remember a time when I did just walk into a bookstore and see what caught my eye, but those days are long passed thank goodness. It sounds like the publishing industry hasn’t gotten the memo. Back in November it hit me that I need to think of my book more like a product … it was just a glimmer of a thought so thank you for filling in all the blanks for me!
April is a star. We did a bunch of these author interviews, but this one with April is still probably my favorite. (Though they're all great, of course!) :P
@@robfitzpatrick I’m enjoying them! And I have to tell you, your book was literally the answer to a prayer. I had been struggling with what I was trying to create and going back-and-forth between online course and app and book and I was just going in circles. Then it was like book proposal or self publish? All of this swirl was because I was thinking of it the wrong way. Then one day it hit me that I just need to write a book but think of it like a product. Which was great clarity, except that I wasn’t sure about how to do that. So a month later I said - God point me in the right direction - and days later I came across Write Useful Books! I think I searched something in TH-cam and found a review of it and it was so refreshing because most of the “write a book” content is for writing novels or idea books (a great distinction you made for me). As soon as I started reading your book, everything locked in and I’m pretty far down the path already… Thank you so much!
Hi Rob, thanks for this video. I purchased and listened to your book and you did an amazing job detailing how to prevent wasting time on building products based on customer "fluff". I've got a question for you though after watching this video and also because your book doesnt seem to address a certain gap. As a content creator how would one get customers to reveal the problems that keep them watching your content? In my specific scenario, I have a small but decent (5k) sized audience in the Men's Self Improvement niche. I've conducted discovery interviews but I just cant seem to find a "problem" that these customers have cobbled together AND is addressed by my content. Here's a summary of the steps I took: 1. Built a posting/forum type website based on initial youtube polls (this defo fails the mom-test, as I literally asked them if its a good idea to build it). 2. Emailed all people that signed up for the website (about 60) and had a few video calls (maybe 6). None of them mentioned any specific problems they were dealing with that keep them watching the content/website. A few mentioned my videos are just reminders to keep them going on their improvement journey (i.e. entertainment) 3. Created intros in my videos to elicit subscribers to come and speak to me about their problems/why they're watching the videos. No responses I appreciate your book as it genuinely makes perfect sense logically. However when it comes to TH-cam (maybe even blogging) it feels like trying to force a square peg in a round hole. I have a feeling people just want to be entertained but dont necessary have a problem to address What gives? thanks, James
Hey Rob, thank you for the great content. My quick question is: I did not feel that you separated customer discovery from customer validation in your book. Can we get customers on board an MVP from the beginning? When you talk about commitments, is it reserved for the second meeting (customer validation) or can we combine both into one meeting and get a commitment to use or try out our MVP?
customer safari is a really funny concept lol
really nice how he delivers immediate value.
really good! I need to read your book!
Thank you so much. I really appreciate you taking the time to create this.
Here's a weird question for you: do you still have the files for the Windows version of "Fire and Forget"? It doesn't seem to be around anywhere else on the internet, and the hard drive I had it on has sadly died. Thanks in advance!
How has your game plan changed since you wrote the book?
e-junkie! So fun! I used that platform to sell my own products like 14 years ago! PS. Rob - Amazing books!
Thanks for this walkthrough. Would love to use this site, but it's non-fiction only right?
why does this person look SO DIFFERENT every time-
Made to Stick / Heath Brothers are truly the gold standard of balancing stories and tactics.
What do you think the progression is? 1. Workshop the idea to flesh out the topics and solution nuances that resonate with specific audiences. 2. Create an online course or cohort based on what you learned from the workshops so that you can further learn and reiterate. 3. Write the book. Or is there a better order? ps I loved this interview!
Seriously awesome questions, Rob!
Thanks Rob.
Such a great message of starting with the dialogue and that’s how it continues at scale.
Watching this 2 years later but having a blast! Big thank you for this, Rob and community! :)

I love my idea the world needs it and wealthy people need it. I'm Just in the wrong Enviornment.
Rob, we live only once. Space exploration is a way to go. People need you at SpaceX
Brilliant. Love how you laid this out. I’ve been calling this “progressive engagement” which is where the community is working toward some shared goal vs “static engagement” where there’s no sense of progression, just variable conversations. “Outcome oriented community” is a great way to describe it.
thank you
@rob - thx for this; just joined your monthly group + software. Super excited. I’m a hardcore scrum guy so your approach is a major ray of sunshine into my writing journey 🚀
Delighted to hear it! Tangentially, we're also just about to announce a 6 week live course that sits on top of the community (from Sept 18th). Might be up your alley.

This chick is a bit of an idiot herself. You can buy physical books online. And while the traditional publishing model is outdated it didn't arise out of idiocy. Those techniques were on point in the past and she's too old not to know that. Only a fool wouldn't worry about physical distribution when it's so damn easy. She spent so much of the interview talking about the perceived shortcomings of others. Ask yourself why someone would do that instead of using their time to talking about their own book without having to slander others to do it...
I'm a huge fan of your first two books. Looking forward to reading #3 as well. Your writing is a joy to read, even if I didn't care about the subject matter. I am also building a community, so I'm super eager to hear what you have to say on the topic.
