Milan Art Institute Mastery Program Part 2 month 6, experience, review and 21 tips for Sections 8-10
My experience of the sixth month Milan Art Institute Mastery Program, which is Part 2: Mixed Media! With 21 Tips along the way and I show you all the assignments that we did in Section 8, section 9 and section 10.
I started the program on January 1st 2024 and hope to finish by December 31 2024!
We learned different techniques for mixed media paintings like oils over acrylics, inks, mark making and spray paint! Aside from that there was a lot of soul searching of what defines us as artists, finding our style, our voice. I share struggles and successes - I hope you find this useful! Please comment if you have questions or requests for art tutorials!

Finding good compositions is essential to make great artworks. How to do that is a whole other question. You might have heard of the Golden Ratio, the Rule of Thirds, Leading Lined, Focal Points... and then you wonder how to apply it or why it gets a bit stale, even though you are doing everything "right". And you look at art that is awesome, and can't see any of the rules above applied! The To...

This is a pretty handy art tip: Sometimes you can't just cut off the edges of a (photo)source to adjust it to the one that you need for your painting, so what to do then? Process video of a charcoal drawing: This method is called „subtraction“ and works great with charcoal. You cover the whole paper with an even layer of mid-value grey. However, if you are on the lookout for really good highlights and contrast, I suggest you leave out the spots where the brightest brights will be in your drawing. Katja, this one made me laugh, and made me cry. My condolences for the loss of your beloved Queenie (auf Deutsch: In Gedanken bei dir). You mentioned coming around full circle. Jung spoke of it as an upward climbing spiral. During our lives we may come back to the same things many times over, but each time around it's with a new and elevated perspective. "Only in our creative acts do we step forth into the light and see ourselves whole and complete." - CG Jung Collected Works Volume 8 para 737 "Creative life always stands outside convention." You're welcome! Well since I'm on a winning streak, will you write a bit about the one that you say "breaks the rules"? Such a rebel! ;-) I see it as a mandala. There's a story in the quadrants. I have my ideas about it, but your interpretation is the only one that means anything because it's your image. I'd love to know what it means for you.

Katja, in contrast to the the unfortunate popularity of making a video that shows everything in its "perfect" finished state, it's great to see such honesty in the way that you showed how you had to undo the mistake with the emergency blanket and to see how you managed to get past it and arrive at something you're happy with. Much appreciated!

Oh you are very welcome. Yes... I have been you TH-cam for a long time and bored with polished perfect in one brushstroke kinds of things, as it is usually not the truth, or has been practised 10-100 times over until it was achieved. Painting is a searching-process for me. That is actually one of the things that makes it so exciting, every time you start a new blank canvas...

Such a thought-provoking video and so well done. I'm also in the program (still in part 1) and a lot of the issues/topics that you talk about in your videos have already crossed my mind. I don't want to become the artist that creates paintings that "are beautiful" or "nice to look at". I'm like you in that I want there to be a story to my art and I want my art to mean something to someone, or to make them think about things that they normally wouldn't. However, I'm still very new to the art world and I often worry that I won't find my voice. I hope that I'm wrong. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to your next video!

Hi, I love that disturbed quote and I also love that pre-milan painting! Sorry about your cat , losing pets is so hard. I’ve very quickly gone “off-piste” with the mastery program and just using the material in my own way. I’m jumping to focusing on the process and spending time with the materials rather than going week to week in order. Not recommended I know but I have the time now to enjoy and I’m not enjoying a lot of section 1. I think I already know what direction I want to take and focusing so much on portraits at this point isn’t what I want to do and I can always go back to do it later!

That’s the next thing on my list to do I’ve been looking forward to that and I was looking forward to spray painting, but I don’t think the spray painting is going to be my big thing to do because it’s too unpredictable and also find inks unpredictable enough and then you cover them up anyway, so I’m looking forward to trying the collage of hope that that will stick with me and onto my paper Ha ha. Thank you so much, glad you are here! A lot of people end up struggling, because part 2 is all over the place and you try out all these materials and you kind of loose yourself in all of that, while with the workbook questions you are supposed to find yourself😅. I didn't like spray paint for my two assignments, but I think I will try them again in the future for bigger canvases. Oh and I'll be curious how you do with collage - because even there I ended up covering up more than I wanted😅. Try to keep a sense of humour and curiosity and you'll be fine.

I will at some point sell prints of my art on my homepage, but I don't dare predict when that will be. A lot of work has to go into my homepage first ;-) I will post a time-lapse of this painting though, in case you are interested. Thank you again!

@@katjart3649 Hi Katja! Apologies for the sudden disappearance. Thank you for your kind words! :-) The videos you make are very candid and honest and insightful. They're extremely helpful to those who are in, or are thinking about joining the Milan program. I've left the Milan community. It's not my intention to be a professional artist, only to learn how to draw and paint symbols and images from my imagination as Odilon Redon and CG Jung did and I realized the full Mastery program would be way overkill when I only need something like the Beginners Art Program. What I appreciate about your art Katja and wrote about it in the community is that your art is different, interesting, refreshing, and from imagination that's unique to you. I love that you appreciate surrealism as I do. I love that you are painting "weirdness" as you say. Of course you must do the assignments with the formula they give you to complete the course properly. I'd love to see how your own style refines itself over time. The Milan formula in my opinion typically is: 1. A collage background 2. Drips of paint 3. A portrait of a woman 4. A portrait of "romanticized, ideal" masculinity stylized as an animal (usually a powerful feline) 5. The whole lot drowning in flowers 6. "Finding your voice" means doing all this but trying to make it look different from everyone else doing the same thing For anyone trying to reconcile the "Milan formula" and their own unique style consider this: even Alphonse Mucha painted art nouveau to make a buck and earn a living. But he also painted "The Slav Epic" which I had the fortune of seeing in Prague when I lived there and it is amazing and definitely not art nouveau! Paint what you must for money. Paint what you want for yourself. If it happens to be the same thing you're lucky! Totally understandable about the prints and website and all that. I look forward to watching the time lapse of the bird painting, super cool idea! Thank you!

Oh wow Jeff, I love everything you wrote. It all rings so true in my ears (and made me laugh) and congrats to you for knowing what you want and need and not wasting your time on everything else out there... Can I see what you make somewhere? My next Mastery Program video of month 6 is out today, and you will see that I put out some more opinionated comment on the predominant abstract realism style that is out there ;-). I agree with you on everything. And since part 1 and 2 are over now, I get to paint whatever I want and that will be so exciting and fun. I will keep searching that balance between possibly being sellable and staying unique as opposed to mainstream, but mainly I want and need to be authentic in my creativity. That's what it all comes down to. Otherwise I don't have to be an artist at all. Thank you again. It's always inspiring and uplifting to connect with like-minded humans. PS: I love Alphonse Mucha of course… the „commercial“ as well as the artistic works

@@katjart3649 In answer to your question, no they're all in my sketchbook. They're really primitive sketches. So primitive that if I uploaded them, I'd be sued by ice age people for copyright violation and all the time in court would take away from my learning ;-). Mostly they're suggestions of form and shape placeholders and notes to help me remember stuff for when the time comes that I can actually give them the vibrant and colorful life that they truly deserve.

I’m really stuck in part two, my pieces are not coming up well and I’m really frustrated fighting mayor artist block, I already watch all the classes till part 7 and can’t make up anything of what I have done so far to be honest i am all the way type S/d and a little bet of C AKT going crazy but, I have no idea what 😢that hell that means and I don’t understand those diagrams they show in the textbook either by the way all your paintings are amazing and unique! Oh please don't despair! See it as a mystery quest! And by all means don't expect to make any kind of cohesive and awesome art during part 2... If you did, you wouldn't need the program. Try the techniques and discard what doesn't rock your boat! You don't have to share your failures like I do! Oh and if you think my stuff is great (thank you for that) - notice that people might say the same about yours! I get it that it doesn't feel like it to yourself. But it is actually also not important. What's important is that you stay with it and don't loose the general passion for painting. If you do, step away and let yourself paint whatever you want to (if you know). That will also give you good input. My next video is coming out very soon and you will see that I am still struggling, but with a definite silver lining!

I think they mainly want you to do it because a lot of companies that you might end up working with will prefer works on paper. Then you can make a bunch, roll it all up and send it away easily... If you use exactly the paper they recommend (100% rag and acid free) it works fine and actually doesn't warp at all.

But I have now been using a special artists tape that removes without problem. I talk about it more in the part 2 videos.

So far I have been using Winsor & Newtons Liquin as well as Schmincke's Rapid Medium, and I can't tell a difference. I like the gel-like consistency of Liquin. I also have some Winsor & Newton Griffin Alkyd paint, which is supposed to dry faster, but I haven't noticed that much of a difference. The most important factor is the climate in your studio. If it is cold and damp it dries much slower...
