Would it be possible if you made a video on reviewing irregular verbs/adj and also noun+이다 and negative forms indirect quoting? I’ve been having a hard time with some irregular verb endings like ㄷ 받침 when it comes to indirect quoting.
I know that is so confusing! Sadly I don’t have much time to make it at the moment. But I will try to cover "Indirect quotation in Korean“ (oh.. it is gonna be a long one.) sometime soon. Quick tip: With -ㄷ irregular verbs, the key is to be aware of when the -ㄷ changes to -ㄹ (typically when followed by vowels) and when it remains unchanged (when followed by consonants). No matter if it is direct speech or reported speech.
@@kimexplainskorean well, I’ll be looking forward to it! Thanks for the tip!!
I'm seeing a lot more "어렸을 때 자주 먹었던" than "어렸을 때 자주 먹던." Is it just more comfortable to say that way? (Thanks for the video!)
The difference between them is „Disconnect nuance!(I mentioned it around 02:00)“ 어렸을 때 자주 먹었던: It suggests that there was a specific time in the past when you used to eat something frequently, but you might not do so anymore. This form focuses on the completion of the action in the past. 어렸을 때 자주 먹던: It implies that eating the food was a regular activity when you were young, without stressing whether the habit has ended or not. This form focuses on the habitual nature of the action in the past. Based on this slight different nuance, you might hear more 먹었던 when people talking.
@@kimexplainskorean Thanks!
Hello... In the last exercise sentence, shouldn't it be 다니시던/다니셨던?
Excellent! That would be more appropriate to add 시 as you mentioned. Thanks for pointing it out! Please note that language etiquette is not clearly defined by the dictionary meaning of the language expression or the language norms, so you should consider the relationship between the speaker and the listener, language habits, etc.
Difficult. Sorry😮 confused in exercise.
Sorry to hear that. This is a definitely tough one to fully understand. Which one exactly is confusing🤔?
I have been researching for a while to understand the difference between 무슨, 어느 and 어떤. This video has been the best to explain the differences. So, thank you so much! I have one question though. When it comes to 계절 I learned it as "무슨 겨절을 가장 좋아해요?" but since there are only 4 options to seasons I would personally use 어느 instead of 무슨. What is the correct way? Thank you <3
Thank you for the compliment. When it comes to 계절, they both are correct to use. (Theoretically 어느 should be used instead of 무슨 as you said) However 무슨 계절 is more commonly used.
@@kimexplainskorean Thank you so much for your response :) Finally I can put my mind to rest <3

Woooow, excellent and very thorough video... Everything is perfectly explained and the examples are very clear. I was getting crazy because I could not find an explanation about the relation between the "wear" verbs (쓰다, 입다, 신다) and ~고 있다. Thank you soooo much, I regained faith in humanity!
Thank you for the cheering comment 😍
안녕하세요! I found your video super helful, thank you so much for the detailed explanations and all the efforts you put into this video! ~~ Just one question: Is there any difference between 결혼한 and 결혼했던? From the overall explanation I feel like 결혼한 곳 may mean "where I married (and I'm still married)" and 결혼했던 곳 - "where I married (but I'm not married anymore)". Is there such a difference at all or am I just being unneccessarily suspicious? :D
I am glad that you found it helpful! And very good question! It means the same (where I got married.) but the nuance is a bit different. 결혼한 곳 :you are simply referring the action in the past. 결혼했던 곳: you are recalling the action /memories. It is hard to guess if this person is still married or not anymore by hearing 결혼한 곳, 결혼했던 곳. Ex) 그 남자는 제가 사랑한/사랑했던 사람이에요. The man is the one that i loved.( she is not in love with this man anymore.) The reason why it is confusing is because.. -ㄴ/은 can be used to for the completed action in the past which has relevance to the present situation. (Not all the time! Not all the action verbs! )It can be just simply used to refer to an action in the past. 이해가 되었나요? 😉 어렵죠?
@@kimexplainskorean Thank you for replying so quickly! I think I'm starting to understand the difference a little bit better. 사랑한 사람 - the person I loved 사랑했던 사람 - the person I used to love (I'm reminiscing about this) 사랑하던 사람 - the person I loved for some time in the past / the person I've been in love with for some time 결혼한 곳 - the place where I got married 결혼했던 곳 - the place where I remember getting married Does this look correct? :)
Almost! 사랑했던/사랑하던 사람: you are reminiscing about this. But 사랑하던 사람 : the memory is more lively than 사랑했던 사람. 결혼한 곳: fact, not reminiscing. 결혼했던 곳: fact + reminiscing! Is it now clear? 🙌🏼
@@kimexplainskorean All clear now! Thank you! ~~~
안녕하세요 선생님! 좋은 강의예요! I think that you are excellent teacher and I enjoy watching your lessons! I am trying to make a Korean sentence. But I am not sure if it is correct. That's why I kindly ask you to tell me is there any difference between these 2 sentences: 시험 보기 전에도 어려울 줄 알았어요. 시험 보기도 전에 어려울 줄 알았어요.
Thanks for the compliment.🙂 And yes, these is a subtle nuance difference between these 2 sentences. 1. 시험 보기 전에도 어려울 줄 알았어요. -도 means also/in addition to. 'I knew that it would be difficult (NOT ONLY)before the exam (BUT ALSO while studying/preparing or something like that.) 2. 시험 보기도 전에 어려울 줄 알았어요. -도 is used to exaggerate/stress! 'I knew that it would be difficult EVEN before the exam.‘ 이해했어요?
@@kimexplainskorean이해했어요. 도와주셔서 감사합니다!
this is so helpful thank you
안녕하세요 이 문장은 (제가 살던 집) 그 집에서 아직 살고 있어요 ? you said that with the repetitive verbs 었던 and 던 are interchangable but does 던 carries its meaning of the uncompleted/stopped action? or it just means that it happened in the near past and not very long ago ?
안녕하세요! 좋은 질문이에요! As 살다 is one of the persistent action verbs(hard to be uncompleted), 살았던 집, 살던 집 they are interchangeable and mean the same. But as I mentioned in that video, 던 has a „lively“ nuance compared to 었던. So when you look back and you think it feels like not ages ago(as you said, in the near past/not very long ago), 살던 would be better to use. I hope it clarifies your question.🤓
Very interesting video. I knew some differences before listening to the video and learned new ones after. Both what I knew and what I didn't know were explained well. Also thank you for using purely hangul and not hangul romanization, it forces me to read in hangul!
omg your voice is so relaxing that seems an ASMR! thanks for the explanation <3

아이고😂 맞아요! 지적해 줘서 고마워요 🙏🏼
Amazing lesson! So comprehensive and clear! As I mentioned in a comment to another one of your videos, I love how you introduce grammatical terms, instead of just immersion techniques or "this is just how it's said" type of answers. It almost turns language structure into a mathematical equation, which feels exciting and also doable, no matter how difficult the rules may be. Especially the explanation you gave in the beginning about 은/는 putting the focus on what comes after it, as opposed to the actual word it is attached on truly unlocked something in my brain. I was struggling to understand the difference between putting the focus on the topic and putting the focus on the subject, when those two are often the same word. I still made a couple of errors in the exercises, but I feel like it is a matter of practicing and thinking back to your explanations again from time to time until they settle in my head. I really enjoy the slower pace and your calming tone as well! I could feel that you really know in depth and have researched this topic thoroughly before this lesson, and it is much appreciated. Thank you so much for sharing this lesson and I'm looking forward to more!
I AM FLATTERED! Thanks for your detailed comment! I feel appreciated! And I hear you! This topic is not easy at all! But practice makes perfect ;-)
This lesson has been extremely helpful! I Love how you mention proper grammatical terms and exceptions, instead of just focusing on what is most common or colloquial. I feel like I'm getting a solid grammar base from your video. The exercise in the end was also particularly helpful to make sure I understood everything properly. Your voice is very calming too! Thank you for this!
So glad to hear that. That is all I want to hear :-) I thank you for your comment!
Thank you I understand everything now and even done some exercices and got them all right but I'm kind of confused on the ''new information'' part of 이/가 and the introduce the topic of 은/는. Some people told me that 은/는 is like a spotlight and it focus on what 은/는 is emphasing on. When you see another 은/는 it's probably for contrast or to change the topic. With that been said so how does the new information act if the 은/는 already introduces a new information?
well done you! To answer your question, most of fairy tales start with "Once upon a time there was a girl. She was ~(blah blah)." In Korean, "옛날에 한 소녀가(New Info) 살았어요. 그 소녀는 (Introducing/ providing info about the subject/old info)~~." 은/는 emphasizes what is followed after 은/는, which is normally a description or an action. Here 가 has focus on 한 소녀 and 은 has focus on blah blah part. Another example! When you introduce yourself, you say "저는 그라젤라(sorry if I am wrong pronouncing your name. I don't know how it should sound .^^;)예요. " Because what you want to say/emphasize is your name.. not "I", even if it is also new info. It depends on the context! I hope my answer clears it up.
@@kimexplainskorean I think I get it know thank you! Just to make sure, if the context were like we're talking about 음식 and then I change the topic to about 개. (and I'm also not comparing in this situation) Will it be I introduce first 음식 with 이/가 then continue with 은/는 because it already been mentioned then I want to talk about 개 so I use 이/가?
I am afraid, it doesn’t work like that all the time. It depends on what you want to say. For example, 내가 가장 좋아하는 한국음식은(providing info) 김치야. 김치는(providing info/old info) 발효음식이야. 내가 가장 좋아하는 한국 드라마는(providing info.. even though the topic has been changed.. 이/가 is not used.) 도깨비야. See my point?
Thank you for this super helpful video! I had no idea about the complement-marking particle :o
It is actually not necessary to know that term. But I find it useful to know and it makes more sense if you know it 😉.
awesome lesson.. looks like im not ready :( ill have to come back in a couple months
Quiz #4. Why must we use present tense instead of future?
Very good question! To make a long story short, 있다 is tricky one, as it can be a verb or an adjective! In this case 시간(이) 있다 it is used as an adjective! (Try to think it like „be available „-state of a person!) But as it ends in/with 있다 , therefore 는! My tip: When adjectives modify nouns, noun modifier 는 is most of the time used. Noun modifier 을 can be attached to adjectives as well but it is very rare and it is hard to make one.
