Wow. I filmed this when I worked for the Saints. I was 15 years old and hired as an usher, turned out they needed someone to film the games for the coaches. I got moved up to the tiny press box at the Newmarket Recreation Complex and filmed every game for the first four of five years of their existence. I moved to college in 1990 and a buddy of mine took over the filming, a year later the team moved to St. Johns, Newfoundland. After each game, I took a VHS tape to each teams' locker room and had a quick chat with Saints coach, Paul Gardner every time. I guess someone found one of these old tapes, digitized it and synced up the Baltimore radio broadcast. Great memories.
Several errors in this report: Dan had 19 years, not 25, with the Blues. His previous years were with Montreal and Hockey Night In Canada. Most of those scoring film clips shown here are matched with Dan's radio calls of other goals. And a huge snafu: The video clip of Bobby Orr scoring the 1970 Cup-winning goal is called here not by Dan, but by his older brother Hal Kelly, who filled in for Dan on St. Louis radio KMOX when Dan was on national TV for CBS.
Thanks for this gem, when hockey was a real sport, miss those times. From Argentina, let's go Lightning!!!!!!!!
Money talks, bullshit walks.
33 in green. Larry legend enough said
I was fortunate enough to see the Celtics play the pistons in a preseason game in Hartford CT and it was standing room only in was a memory that always brings a smile to my face
Larry was a different bird
I'm a Flyers fan - but Sam Rosen and Phil Esposito were pretty good.
Their goal horn sounds like a laser mixed with a futuristic record player.
Larry Bird -AWESOME!!
Did you just call me
Tom Barrasso was the difference. The hawks kept coming after him. Chance after chance but the stood on his head.
Legend
2:26:09 - should have been awarded a penalty shot
Excellent
I was at that game; you would NOT believe how loud that crowd was that night!!! MADhouse!
Any more Leafs games on the way?
There's only ONE Don Cherry. and if you're a Bruin fan like me, you still love him.
What a win by the Blackhawks I miss Chicago Staduim
Why did Sweden get third place?
Any more Leafs games from that year? Like on CKVR or CTV?
Красавцы! Уделали совков!
They had to wait as the USSR and Sweden had to play after the US and Finland
Sadly, when they play the recording of Dan Kelly’s acceptance speech, you can tell he was dying of lung cancer because of his rather gravelly voice. He passed away only a couple of months after being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. At least he knew how much he was respected throughout the sport before he died.
Thankfully Bobby Hull had better toupees in Winnipeg than Chicago.
Rick Dudley on thumbnail! 😂 Gotta take a peak ! As a young man I loved him with the Sabres. Duds can get fired up.
The greatest American sporting event ever!
I was at this game!
Mad Respect For You
He was a thorn in my side and for my Lakers
Best ever: Larry Joe Bird! 🙏 ❤xoxo
First time I’ve seen this clip and one of the things that impressed me the most was seeing members of the Sweds and the Russia’s not just shaking the hands of the USA team members but “hugging them”. Now that is what TRUE sportsmanship is about.
It's great to see larry and hear stories directly from his mouth, but honestly, the entire people organizing this event completely embarrassed themselves. Lucky for them it was a long time ago, but the video montage was brutal. They showed all their all star legends getting shut down in the video clips, Bill Russell the man himself getting his shot blocked, etc, and then they messed up Larry's family introduction, totally botched that. Seriously, the quality that mainstream tv could get away with was terrible. As they had no competition, so this was the only show in town to see a doc on Larry Bird. Now there are tends of thousands of videos of Larry Bird on youtube, etc. Thank-fully we are no longer limited by the handful of mainstream tv channels at the time and that was it. I lived through the 80's, and this is why we were outside playing basketball instead of watching youtube videos on it. Because the quality of tv was so bad for things like this. TV in the eighties was terrible across the board, except the news was far better. Back then it was 'what, who, when, where' and that was it. They didn't inject their own agendas into every story like now. And then movies were also better...
fat
Fred Cusic and Deric Sanderson..brings back memories 😀
December 9th,1984 lets go Hawks
The snippet of Orr scoring his famous goal is not the Dan Kelly call.
You are correct. And do you know whose voice that was? None other than HAL Kelly, Dan’s older brother. When Dan was doing network broadcasts for CBS TV, as he was for the Stanley Cup Finals, his brother Hal backfilled for him on local KMOX radio broadcasts in St. Louis.
Thanks for the update. I did not know that.
Dave Manson threw every ounce of body weight into those rights against Stevens, holy cow
I think the Admirals were the Blackhawks’ top affiliate that year.
I hate America
Who cares?
Was this the year the Skipjacks had an awful record?
NHL owner took advantage from players for many years. They the owners were making millions and giving the players chump change. The WHA also helped raise the money that players started receiving.
I do not think any new league that started and tried to compete with the top league or original league ever succeeded. NFL there was USFL, NBA there was ABA, I don't think anyone tried to compete against MLB and the NHL had WHA try and compete none survived or were able to take out the original league. But I think with hockey it was good for the NHL as it got more people watching hockey in small cities, towns and small markets. The NHL did not look like they had any plans to expand. But when you try and compete you are trying to attract fans so huge contracts were given to so many players to move over to the WHA. So it was a huge problem to pay and keep these players. But there were huge turnovers in franchises. But again the NHL survived and also expanded by picking up 5 or 6 teams. So in a way the WHA offered fans more hockey and they also gifted the NHL franchises after they folded. They say the championship trophy was not ready and the championship team had to use there conference finals trophy. You would think they would be able to have a trophy for championship they had a full year to get one lol!!!
That's a captain right there!!!
Personally I don't think it was about who was the best, it was about all the greats of that era that made those teams and players so much fun to watch, disappointments one night became joy the next.
The goaltender for Sweden was Pelle Lindbergh. Sadly he died in a car crash in 1985 a few months after winning the Vezina Trophy and leading the Flyers to the Cup finals. That gave me chills. He was a pioneer for European goaltenders in the NHL.
GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 🇺🇸
I just wish his oldest daughter could have been there. She loves him so much, has endured so much hurt and done it with grace.
I've never heard this before, wow, Don still impresses me and it's 2024!
21:37 the fact that goal got that crowd reaction with maybe half the place filled (pre opening ceremonies and transportation problems) is unreal
