Hillcrest Halt Model Railways
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 10 ม.ค. 2023
Welcome to Hillcrest Halt Model Railways .
On this channel I take you along with me as I visit numerous model railway shops, from cozy family run stores, to bustling emporiums. I also visit exhibitions where train layouts come to life, like at the Great Electric Train Show, to the bustling atmosphere of the National Railway Museum in York.
I also take a look at Heritage Railways showcasing the history of railways. From Vintage Steam Locomotives, Diesel Locomotives and Railway Architecture. I use my visits to gain inspiration and ideas for my model railway layout Hillcrest Halt.
Hillcrest Halt is loosely based on the Settle and Carlisle Railways. It will be a modular layout. I'll be doing some tips and tricks along the way with scenery and even the electrical side, unboxing new loco's too. I love all gauges of model railways so there will be some N Gauge thrown in as well.
If you love anything train related, this is the channel for you.

Metcalfe kit Gluing Tip
มุมมอง 3682 หลายเดือนก่อน
Just started work on the Village shop and Cafe and come across a problem I’ve had in the past. Starting off any new kit I always find awkward getting the fiddly first few sides glued and held together, so I came up with this quick solution. Hope you find it useful. #metcalfemodelsandtoys #ngauge #gluingtip

Model Rail Crewe June 23rd 2024

A Fantastic new Model Rail Exhibition organised by Jason of Barnabas Junction, held at the Coppenhall Club in Crewe. A brilliant selection of model railway layouts in N , 00 and 0 Gauge. There was quite a few traders in attendance too. Also organised was a TH-camrs Meet & Greet organised by Timbersurf, and volunteers on the day included Rob & Grace of RGJ Trains and many more. I got to meet qui...

I'm finally starting my main 00 Gauge Layout Build series. It will be loosely based on Goathland station in Yorkshire. I'll be mainly using Metcalfe buildings on the layout and it will be my first proper attempt at scenery too. Hope you enjoy. Parts I used for the baseboard :- 4ft x 2Ft Sundeala Board (The Signal Box - Anstey) 9mm Plywood Sheet (Brockwells Timber) M8 T- Nuts ( Toolstation code ...
Britannia taking on water in Atherstone.
มุมมอง 1.2K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video the Britannia along its route pulls into Atherstone Station to fill up with water. As there is no Water Tower the method of filling was done with a Water Tanker and a special Valve system. The Britannia was built at Crewe works. It was named at a ceremony at Marylebone Station, by the then minister for transport Alfred Barnes, in January 1951. The locomotive helped haul the funera...

Looks to offer plenty of activity.
Thankyou. I’m hoping to add decoupling units on the sidings too , to help me manage the rolling stock. 😊
Hi Richard. Nice bit of track planning there buddy. Points all making good contacts. Thanks for sharing Richard. Thumbs up thumped 👍 ....Pete....
Thanks Pete. The layout is loosely based on another layout by Dibsyardshuntinglayout on Instagram. He gave me permission to use his layout for inspiration. 😊
Coming along...
@@hotdogpilot6319 Thankyou. Not had much time for the layout recently, but now I’ve got the track laid and power mostly sorted I’m hoping to get on to the more fun bits to make it come more to life. 😊
Good luck hope new job goes well !
Good luck with your new job.
All grist to the mill as they say.
@@hotdogpilot6319 Most definitely. I have probably made a rod for my own back though using a double slip and a three way point on the layout. But I do like a challenge! 😂
Am building a dc layout. Do I still need to connect each green wire together? Even tho all the point motors have the green wire coming into the switch?
Hi. Yes all your greens need linking together as that’s the common ground.
@HillcrestHalt so basically put all the point motor wires in each switch but link all the green together?
@@roberthall7059yes that’s correct. You basically wire up exactly how I’ve done it but just add more points wired exactly the same way. If you use the same switch as me then you can link more switches by adding another red and black wire to another switch module.
@HillcrestHalt thanks. Am using rails of Sheffield point motors which come wired up ready
Hi Great little tutorial, that soldering iron is similar to the one Phil Parker used on one of WoR's recent videos. Thanks
Thankyou for watching . Yes it’s a great little soldering iron. I do still have to use a standard soldering iron though for some work. I ended up melting a sleeper because I hadn’t noticed a little vent angled towards the track blasting out really hot air. Other than that it’s an amazing bit of kit. 😊
OMG I have to go to this shop soon. Amazing. Nice to see someone still having the balls to keep a shop instead of just a website. Good on ya. Al defo visit you guys. 👍🏆🇬🇧
Any model shop that is thriving must be good, went to Rails once many years ago (20) and I must admit even then had @ great selection secondhand on display. Only criticism lack of car parking then.
I have to agree on the parking as the shop is on a main road. Luckily we needed some food shopping too so parked up the road on the Lidl store car park.
Cool bit of kit
Yes it is rather. 😊
Certainly one of the best! Always had great customer service and even at one point where there was something I had originally on preorder with a deposit, when I went to cancel this item, they were kind enough to let me use the said-deposit on something else! :)
@@richardknowles963 Hi Richard. I wish this shop was closer to me , I’d be in there all the time . Thanks for watching 😊
@@HillcrestHalt Well I actually live in North Wales but my experiences online and over the phone have always been positive! :)
bought from your ebay listings in the past, always a good service. All the best and will use you again.
At first look, Grenval, grab a cloth!
Was that a troublesome point?
@@charlie1872 The points aren’t wired in properly yet, just had a single feed to the track. I hope it will work though along with the double slip. I’ll be starting to put the droppers on first , then onto wiring up the points. I have an 8 way switch that I’ll be using to power the points too. Below is the video showing how I’ll be wiring up my points. 😊 Wiring a 2JZ isn't as easy as I thought... th-cam.com/video/aaa4lG55Rok/w-d-xo.html
@@HillcrestHalt I will look forward to watching that. i know small 0-4-0 locos have trouble negotiating the points
Any used?
@@plunkervillerr1529 Hi . Yes they have a large room also full of used stock. 😊
Worst customer service. Dreadful attitude to sorting faulty goods. Wouldn’t buy so much as a track rubber from them.
Agreed. I'm still waiting for a pre-ordered model that was released 3 weeks ago and was paid for 7 days ago. I'm going to cancel my other pre-orders and go elsewhere. I've been a Rails customer for years and I'd never recommend using them again.
Looks like a great plan. I like the dual track mainline. Part of Dib's Yard track plan is based around an old double track that was converted to single as traffic decreased. Hence why the engine shed is so basic as it was thrown up over one of the disused lines.
Triple point AND a double slip on the main line. How does the song go; "there may be trouble ahead". By all means try it, but have a box of kleenex ready for the tears.
lol I’m definitely up for the challenge. Might even consider trying point rodding but first attempt will be using either Peco pm1 or servo points from scalemodelscenery.😊
Best Railway model shop, OK. But if you're not into trains, Hobbycraft wins, hands down. And there's a lot better than Hobbycraft.
You got me in shot 😂 Nice video that deserves more views.
@@Warbler-Productions I know lol. It is a shame it’s not had more views but never mind. Still brilliant though, love the echo off the train as it starts to move off. 😊 Thanks for watching.
Hi Richard. Lovely looking DMU. Had a bit of a nightmare with hornbys HM 7000 when it first came out, never tried it again. Nice quite running. Looks the part as well. Thank you for the bit of history. Thank you Richard. Thumbs up thumped 👍 ....Pete....
Pity Hornby did not retool the 110 to modern standards...
It's around 40 years old by now
@@EE12CSVT I know I have 2 of rhe original 3 car sets..one in Blue Grey & one in white blue plus extra coach for the blue grey one...with adverts inside for railriders lol
@@GregPalmer1000 I never knew RR had ads in Hornby models
@@EE12CSVT i have the sets packed away so cant take a pic of them...but they were in both sets...
Your a very fast worker! Looks great.
Thankyou. I’ve actually been planning it for months but finally set it up at Railway club the other week. I’m working on the Station Building again later tonight. 😊
That is a cool train !
It might be best for model railways, but not for all models.
Great video, thanks for taking us along.
Thankyou. It was a brilliant show. The first one organised by Barnabas Junction.
@@HillcrestHalt We have our share of shows here but nowhere near as much as in the UK sadly. So I'm always keen on still seeing the shows that I'm unable to attend.
Seen you post on LinkedIn and will support your channel by liking and subscribing. Doing some great videos. I wish you the very best!
I thought it was a cockatiel
This is my local model shop in Rhuddlan, I’m in there every week, it’s a great shop.
It’s a brilliant shop, just like the Tardis. 😊
Hi Richard. Very nice exhibition. Some great layouts. Wish I could have been there to meet everyone. Thanks buddy. Thumbs up thumped 👍 ....Pete....
It was a brilliant exhibition. Very popular. I’ll be going next year too hopefully. 😊
WOW you weren't kidding win you sed it was the best. Thanks for the video!!!!
I swear i heard both Grace and Jason in your video, great to meet you buddy
lol yes we were both saying yesterday that we heard both Grace and Jason(1 minute 22 seconds in). Cindy appears again just like where’s Wally too lol.Great to meet you again too. 😊
Great coverage
Thankyou. It was a brilliant show. Brand new too as it was the very first one organised by Barnabas Junction. Quite a few TH-camrs turned up too. 😊
Pity you didn't do a close up on the prices and cases. I reckon they are an expensive shop. Currently on E-Bay they have an old Triang and Hornby coach (the LNER one with no interior), worth around £10 max! For £29.50 plus P&P!!!
Ahh brilliant, thanks for the link buddy
Is this your personal layout? looks like you are building in a church hall or something?
Yes it’s my personal layout. I did forget to link an earlier video that shows most of the Metcalfe buildings I’ll be using. The layout is 8ft x 6ft so won’t fit in our flat lol. It’s Caldecote Village Hall where our model railway club meets every Wednesday. th-cam.com/video/r-h5qXp5TE8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=uo8EiZ1wsQI7addq
Looking good !
On the basis of this video I went to visit the new expanded shop. They didn't have a single thing on my shopping list. Got fed up of the "it's in our warehouse, not here" excuse and left. I shan't be back.
Yup, I discovered the same issue in May. The staff went above and bevond however in getting the items I wanted sent to me by mail at no extra cost.
