Kayak & Snorkel UK
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 11 พ.ค. 2021
Join us on our new adventure to kayak and snorkel around the UK coast. Based on the south coast we want to visit as many locations as possible in the hope of covering most of the UK. Should be fun discovering the many hidden gems our coast has to offer to those who kayak and snorkel.
Snorkelling around Lulworth Cove
A snorkel around Lulworth Cove. I was going to do a Kayaking video but ended up filming the fish instead and saw some great looking fish too. Visibility was brilliant as you can see so was perfect for filming. It was also my first time snorkelling in a wetsuit (4/3 O'Neill Epic) and it was a struggle trying to duck dive. Hope the music isn't annoying lol.

kayaking along the River Itchen on my RTM Dag Midway

kayaking the River Itchen from Woodmill Activity Centre to beyond Northam bridge. However I mistakenly didn't record fully how far beyond Northam bridge I paddled. Got to just before Shamrock Quay then turned back because of some large boat traffic.

kayaking from old Ilford bridge to the Captain's Club Hotel in Christchurch. First time paddling the Midway on a river and I was surprised at how different it was. Less primary stability and harder to paddle due I guess to the boat sitting a tad lower in fresh water compared to salt. It felt like I was paddling through treacle. However I was rewarded for going out early with seeing several hero...
Another Lake pier paddle in the RTM Midway
มุมมอง 1212 ปีที่แล้ว
Another paddle around lake pier on our Midways. Not on video was a go at a tow which went well and the wife practicing self rescues. Tide was dropping too low with it being a spring tide so next time we'll paddle the flood and go further around. I also had a go at some bracing, right or wrong I dunno but it was all good fun.
Efficient paddle technique? 'Rotation' ??
มุมมอง 1232 ปีที่แล้ว
Trying to work on efficient paddle technique and rotating with leg drive rather than arm power. Yes it requires a lot of work but I'm having a go and even if not looking at all correct I was fully aware I was going faster with less effort. So it's a start in the right direction.

Paddling from Lake pier in Poole harbour to Rockley Park in my RTM Dag Midway. First time in a flat calm sea. Had a nice chat with a guy paddling a Salty Frog and done some more self rescues. They're very easy in flat calm water.
RTM dag Midway 3rd paddle in Poole harbour (8hrs total paddling time)
มุมมอง 8852 ปีที่แล้ว
This is my third day in the Midway with around 8 hrs total paddling time. So still completely new to this kayak but as you can see time in the seat is all it takes. I now only tip out if I deliberately do so.
RTM dag Midway 2nd paddle in Poole harbour
มุมมอง 5022 ปีที่แล้ว
Second time out in the Midway in more challenging conditions. Wind was WSW F4 gusting to 6. Starting to find my balance now and chose to paddle beam on deliberately to work at staying upright. Used a different seated position with knees bent and the console being gripped just behind my knees which I found gave me more control than in closer with legs flatter. Was able to really feel the seconda...

RTM dag Midway maiden paddle and self rescue practice
มุมมอง 2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Very first paddle of one of our new RTM dag Midways. Lots and lots of self rescue practice too, some deliberate some not. Really nice to paddle but it was my first time and was very tippy. I lost a scupper plug but it doesn't really need them anyway. I also lost our GoPro hero 7 black as you will see, however by some amazing good luck it washed back onto the beach an hour or so into the ebb. Th...
GoPro position test on my RTM Dag MidWay sit on top kayak
มุมมอง 2583 ปีที่แล้ว
Just looking to see what would be best. As I intend to fit a compass I decided on the forward position. However mounts and pads are cheap soooo I will just fit another mount so I can have either. I'll have my chest mount and stick too. Oh and yes it's 1080p from the GoPro,it's not like this needs to be 4k 🙄. Just longing to get out on the water which I'm still unable to do 😔.
RTM Dag Midway sit on top kayak, is it REALLY 23kg?? I weigh it and find out.
มุมมอง 1.6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Having collected our new RTM Midways last week I thought they felt heavier than the claimed 23kg and so i decided to find out for sure what they weighed. See the outcome for yourself. I wont spoil the surprise in the description.
My new RTM Dag Midway kayak walk around
มุมมอง 3K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Welcome to our new youtube channel. This is a walk around video of one our new RTM Midway kayaks formerly sold under the DAG name but now RTM. I spent a year researching and almost opted for a perception triumph 13. The Midway should suit our kayaking requirements spot on. That being a kayak with good initial and secondary stability, good speed, extremely capable in most sea conditions and able...
How's kayak and snorkel uk doing. Just wondered if you still get out on tge kayak.
Hi, very unrelated question: Can you perhaps tell me the name of the orange flowers in the background from 0:55? Thank you:)
My home since 1960 and thriving beautiful kelp beds ….please make sure you keep it that way!!
I wanted a DAG but couldn't find one so bought the very similar RTM Tempo in late 2017. Lovely craft and fast but tippy. Experienced the same self-rescue problems until I learnt to throw myself up across the stern at a sharp angle. This takes advantage of the kayak's weight along its length as it represents a more stable platform lengthways than trying to get back on using the conventional side approach.
Cowboy rescue, don't think I'd get over the slight hump on the midway, plus I have a 26 ltr barrel on it as well now. I'm fine with the regular SOT self rescue now so all is good 👍
@@kayaksnorkeluk8272 Yes, there was no easy option to get back on. I didn't have anything additional on the kayak to block access from the rear but it was the only thing that worked for me.
A very detailed review. Thank you.
Hi, do you have any contact details, email, Facebook? Was wondering where your based?
I don't do Facebook or any other social media. I'm based in Southampton.
I agree paddling close to the coast is way more interesting than being miles out! 👍
Your flying along there mate! 🙂I love the speed that midway has - great for currents and headwinds!
The Midway will not disappoint mate! Where did you buy yours btw? I've had one since 2018 and it's such an awesome bit of kit and I'd like to acquire maybe 2 or 3 more but I'm finding it hard to pin down resellers in my neck of the woods (Indian Ocean). Would really appreciate if you could point me in the right direction. 👍
I got mine from 24/7 boardsports in Calshot which is local to me. However they always now say out of stock as do every other supplier it seems 😞. I wouldn't be surprised if RTM stop producing them as everyone seems to get the tempo instead. I'd maybe contact RTM or ask a dealer who maybe able to help out. As you see from my vid the outfitting has changed a fair bit from your midway. My only gripe with it is it struggles with wind and waves behind making the bow try to swing round. Head on into the rough it's solid, side on still good and a test of your loose hips. I may give the seat another try as I've been paddling it without. Your lucky being in the Indian Ocean 😎, I went to the Maldives so I know first hand how nice it is 👍 Btw, love your channel name 😉

Replied on my other vid via your comment from your new channel 👍😉
Hi, about to pick up my own midway this afternoon in southern Brittany, and meanwhile watched some of your videos. If you’re asking if your stroke is efficient, may I point out that you seem to mainly use your arms and not so much your torso and legs. I would suggest to save your energy by using these instead, combining torso rotation and pushing on your legs. Enjoy your kayak and bonne navigation!
Cheers, yea trying to use more torso each time. I think you'll like the midway, it keeps up with the Dagger Stratos easily so that gives you an indication of speed. It just suffers a bit with wind and waves behind from the lack of skeg. Looks better than the tempo alternative too imo. What colour are you getting?
Ive got an older Dag Midway. Had much the same experience, very tippy to begin with. But got over that fairly quickly. Self rescuing took a while to get the right technique though. Kept flipping over again as you did. Was trying to do it one one motion from floating my legs to kicking and pulling myself onto the kayak. Much easier when i learned to kick and pull my chest onto the kayak, let it stabilize, and then pull myself fully on. Still get the odd fright when im paddling along and unexpectedly miss/slice a paddlestroke. Almost tips me over everytime :) I thought the front hatch looked much improved on this version until i read your comment about the water getting in. Mine has a loose fitting hard plastic cover, with a neoprene cover below that with a rope edging. Its a bugger to get on, and not very watertight. The foam bulkhead on mine also needed silicone to stop it leaking, and stop it falling about. Far too loose. Great kayak though once you get used to it. And the wobbliness always makes for a good laugh when letting people try it.
Annoyingly my wife's maiden went trouble free despite being her first time. She finds it really stable. I'm able to get on in one now but always have my legs out stabilizing it whilst i grab my paddle. Although I can also self rescue whilst holding the paddle now as well. The hatch is ok unless it spends considerable time submerged. Thankfully I dont accidentally tip out anymore. I am finding the Carl system very helpful in staying upright in more choppy water. How long have you had yours now then as that version is the original. You have the handles to and I wish ours did. It's good hearing from others with the same kayak 😎👍
Also there's not a great deal of info on this kayak and very few people who's uploaded videos of it. Reviews I read of its tippyness were mainly from kayak fishermen so were after a far more stable kayak and weren't prepared to put in the time to get to grips with it. Codbotherer on here fished from his no problem. I've even seen a guy fishing on a surfski lol.
@@kayaksnorkeluk8272 Had mine about 4 and half years now. I did notice the lack of handles. Not sure why they would remove that, but on mine my fingers do sometimes get squashed between the handle and kayak depending on how you lift it. An improvement for that instead of removing them would have been better though. I got mine because i wanted a more sea kayak like sot, for the ease of solo rescue. But i have since started to fish from it also, and its no bother. A more stable fishing specific kayak would be better for it, but as i read on some of the reviews for it, the Midway is more for mainly paddling with a bit of fishing, instead of mainly fishing and a bit of paddling.
@@Xaltae same here, a more sea kayak sot. I was torn between that or the tempo but I kept looking at pics and thought the midway looks way better and as you say more sea kayak less sot. I have got used to no handles when lifting now but I have toyed with the idea of fitting some RTM handles but I won't bother. Are you uk based.
@@kayaksnorkeluk8272 Yeah, scotland. Not been out since march. Seems to always be windy when i get the chance!
Hi and thanks, Kayak & Snorkel UK for sharing. Stunning sky and water!!! It's just beautiful and smooth paddling@10:50. What happening here? Rolling your kayak? I hope you are safe and sound@13:52, @14:31. Well done and keep coming. 🙋♀🛶
Thanks for the paddling compliment 😊. That at the end I was having a go at learning to edge trying to brace and as you see I went a little too far lol. I was in really shallow too. It's going to take a lot of time and practice 👍
@@kayaksnorkeluk8272 Thank you for educating me. I'm learning sea-kayaking through your videos since I am considering getting myself one. 🙋♀🙋♀🛶🛶My recreational kayaks are not made for.
Hi and thanks, Kayak & Snorkel UK for sharing. Stay cool and hydrated this coming week. You are wearing a wetsuit...the water is cold in July? Wowowow, the pristine water, why nobody is not snorkeling, right? Plenty of vegetation and wildlife. I do also like kayaking and snorkeling, and you made my day. Well done and keep coming. 🙋♀🛶
Hi, sea temp there at the moment is 17deg, i have snorkeled in that wearing a rash top for 2hrs before but I was then feeling the cold, it's doable but more comfortable in a wetsuit, and safer given the extra bouyancy. Wearing the 4/3 felt spot on. It is a very beautiful spot, loads of weed and fish and that day visibility was amazing. There was another guy snorkelling once I started kayaking again. Glad you liked it 👍
Back to Cobden bridge NOT Northam bridge @20:21 what a doofus lol
Was you not warm in all the gear?
No I felt ok. Wearing 4:3 epic, rash top underneath then CAG. I would have most likely been ok without the CAG though. However when I peeled the wetsuit down I started steaming excessively lol. If I start getting too hot it's nice to jump off for a cool down.
Why is the camera facing you? What about a GoPro on a helmet?
Why is the camera facing you? What about a GoPro on a helmet?
I have recently purchased a head strap. I'll use it next time. Should get out a couple of times over Easter. At a later date (when my situation improves) I'll get a second GoPro so I can easily go between the two 👍
Why is there so much self-rescue?
Because it was my maiden paddle and I'd never done self rescues before, just watched them on TH-cam. Besides on this paddle I spent most of the time swimming as my ballance was a little 'off' shall we say 😆. I'm ok with them now and can remount without immediately swimming again (but I have to practice in rough conditions too).
Thanks to Adrian th-cam.com/users/AdrianOates for telling me about this great launch site.
I absolutely wet myself when you went over. Told you it was tippy lol.
Ha ha, yea it is a bit isn't it 😄. I wasn't expecting that to happen with my legs out though. However after around 8hrs I can paddle it without tipping out now. Been deliberately paddling in windy conditions etc which is helping to speed up the learning curve. You'll see in my latest I can turn to side saddle and back now and repeat. It's certainly a sot that requires paddling time to get used to. It's almost like paddling a surf ski 😲
@@kayaksnorkeluk8272 that's probably why it's fast, I guess you can't have both speed and stability. I've never sat inside a kayak and gone over like the midway goes over. To be fair I was expecting it to be more stable than it is. Be like you say, after a while you get used to it.
@@mikelink5101 yea, it's a bit deceiving watching the limited midway vids on TH-cam so I thought it good to show it from the perspective of someone coming up from a two man inflatable kayak. It'll also show how quick you can get used to it after a few days paddling. Hours wise I'm up to around 12 hrs so it doesn't take long. Too many give up immediately on the midway after just one or two days which is a shame. I'm more happy now than on that first go. Self rescues were spot on every time BUT it was dead calm. Been up and down from lake pier to Rockly Park in Poole today in a millpond sea. What a difference calm conditions make. Have you got yours out on the sea yet?
@@mikelink5101 My wife had her maiden in her midway today. She's 5'8 and 9st 10 and got straight in, feet in and of she went without even a sniff of a wobble. Conditions were force 4 gusting to 5 and she was solidly stable. She didn't tip out once and found it extremely stable even feet in sat with 2.5ft waves beam on. I was impressed. I'm very comfy with it myself now too which is good.
@@kayaksnorkeluk8272 she must be an absolute natural then lol. I've not had mine on the sea yet as I live at least 1 and 1/2 hours away from the sea
No onboard GoPro footage as it was left at home......in the rucksack along with our food and drink for the day, so only a short paddle.
After a while I removed the seat and although I was using the rtm delux seat which is around 1/2 inch thick the kayak became more stable and also self rescues became a bit easier. It was also just as comfortable without a seat.
Kayak maiden this Friday 👍👍🤙
I've just noticed another change in design. On the older models the deck lines stop near the seat then continue from the start of the tank well. These new ones now have the deck lines complete from bow to stern without any breaks.
Update:- I have just had 'some' of my driving entitlements reinstated, soooo the Midway maiden is approaching 👍. Our car goes in for MOT and service on 2nd march so by the weekend of that week we will have finally paddled our Midways for the first time. Watch this space.
Nice looking kayak where can I buy one in the UK? Can't seem to find a dealer anywhere
Hi, I got mine from here www.24-7boardsports.com/dag-midway-se-kayak/ however it did take a while as I literally had to wait for rtm to make them. Supply is a huge issue ATM with these and I felt lucky to get these. I had the option to cancel due to the time taken but I wasn't wanting to risk not getting one. I was also lucky that this guy is local to me. There is actually a new one on eBay at the moment. Orange one been up for some time. Saw a used one on gumtree the other day too. I managed to get the seats thrown in for free because I bought two Midways 😎👍. Maybe contact some stockists to ask if they're taking orders? It took 3 months for our cats to arrive aswell 😳, that was when the evergiven was stuck.
Here is the shop that has one on eBay, he has 1 anthracite storm like mine or red/yellow. shop.canoes2go.co.uk/shop/sit-on-top/rtm-dag/rtm-midway-touring-sit-on-top-kayak/
@@kayaksnorkeluk8272 Thanks for the info will check them out
What size are your scupper plugs please? Large or medium? My originals fell out when I went over and the new ones they have sent me are large and are really difficult to fit compared with the others but they are definitely not gonna fall out which makes me wonder if they were the wrong size in the first place.
I'll measure, not tried mine yet.
35mm. A snug fit. Number on pack BOUAUT2T barcode 3 670783 003581
@@kayaksnorkeluk8272 yours are the medium then which fit easier but come out when the kayak is turned over. The large are much harder to fit but ain't gonna fall out. The confusion for me is that the rtm rep recommended the large but it came from the manufacturer with medium. I'm gonna email RTM directly and ask.
@@mikelink5101 They never got back to me about the weight claim vs actual weight. They responded about the absence of cockpit strap handles though. Vague reply saying yes the new ones come without.
@@kayaksnorkeluk8272 I'm still waiting on a reply about the bungs.
I have since weighed the seat & CARL system separately (with fixings) and that was 1.75kg.
