Textbook definition of crazy to build a house without a foundation because the owner is too cheap to pay $1000 for a rubble trench under a 2100ft2 floorplan. That's but a drop in the bucket in terms of how many worthless collapsing fiat dollars it takes to build a fort these days. The crazier question is the bermed back wall gonna be bags of fine blow sand laid straight and plumb in order to simplify his roof plate---or curved/battered for structural buttressing strength?

Dumping from battery is not a very good way to divert excess solar power. Doing that requires an extra KWH of battery storage, adds extra cycles to the battery, can leave you at the end of the day without a full battery and can damage batteries by not allowing them to balance. It is far more efficient to divert directly from array voltage into a higher voltage heater element. I can divert any excess 5 to 1,500W as it happens and never touch resources of charge controller, inverter or battery. It is amazing how much excess there is in solar systems and the time charge controllers are not putting all they can into the battery. I have a small system and even the laundry has a hot water tank. All cycles use hot water and the clothes come out steaming.

I have thought about a very closely related concept. If my panels fully charge my batteries by noon (for example), I could run heavy loads, even an electric dryer, in the early afternoon and still have plenty of sunlight to recharge the batteries before sundown, as if the heavy load never happened. But it did.

There is a common thing on water heaters that you should look into. They have two elements but only one is powered at a time by the controller. The way it works is normally the lower element runs to keep the whole tank at temperature. If you draw off so much hot water that the upper part drops below a slightly lower set point, they turn off the lower element and apply power to the upper one. This means that get get a few advantages: 1) The amount of hot water you can draw off before it gets really cold is increased a lot. This is because instead of trying to warm the suport cold water at the bottom of the tank you instead warm some that is already a little warmed, 2) The effective efficiency of the hot water system is improved because you are using a smaller tank that takes less power to keep hot.

Electric heat is sort of 100% efficient. Heat pumps are sort of more than 100% efficient because the move heat rather than creating it. Really he could use a heat pump as his energy dump and get even more hot water.

Its excess power: its 100% efficient. You mean to say passive solar gets hotter quicker. Mostly people use hot water in the evenings and early mornings so in most cases this wouldn't be a factor. Saying this as a fan of passive solar.

Water heaters only run one element at a time. The top one runs until the water in the upper part of the tank is warm and then it turns off and powers on the lower element. You should be able to wire it up like normal one would think unless the switch over needs 208.

    • @kensmith5694

Extremely practical that you guys separated the solarium/greenhouse from the living quarters as that's often a big issue with most earthships that have green house/living as open plan. Just imagine if you had bought land away from the Crestonarcissists of TrustFundTweakerTown. No methheads attacking cops with metal bars out where you don't have to beg the POA to plant food, and none of the local entitlement that has your neighbors arguing that they should have the right to assault lowly $20/hr public employees without consequence. After all, back in the good ol days of Deputy Wayne Clark, he'd even help your neighbors hide bodies. I checked prices recently, my 150 acres with 70 gal min artesian water flow would not even buy me half of a yurt on .88 acres in that least spiritual community in the valley. Objectively, it's rather obvious that there is more money than intelligence in that community. You could blindfold me and spin me around, and I could orient myself from the palpable banality of evil that emanates from that cesspool of humanity, from the House of Presstitution called the "eagle" whose editor is so dumb he thinks that an eagle sounds like a red tailed hawk, to the amoral sociopaths who run the mercantile, who literally take offense at the tone in which they are asked to stop their active finacial support for genocide. There's also the whole racism thing, where residents give deference to open members of religious orders that embraced the Axis powers in WWII (Specifically the imperial mind control cults that invert Buddhism). Just a warning for anyone, Crestone is an evil place, filled with the most vapidly narcissistic people on the planet. It also has a organized crime ring masquerading as a POA, which last I dealt with it was run by a defective clone of Debbie Wasserman Schultz. The people from that town are despised as rude, arrogant, entitled, and incredibly dumb by the rest of the valley. You can get land other places in Saguache county, far cheaper, with better soil, water rights, and neighbors. Unless your idea of religion is self-worship, there is nothing at all in Crestone for you but a couple photo ops.
