Topwater Flathead on Extreme Shallow Flats
This session was all about exploring the ultra-shallow flats, working in just 30 to 50 cm of water with some incredible surface strikes. The Shimano Arma Joint 190 and OSP Bent Minnow 130 took center stage, and they didn’t disappoint! These lures are perfect for creating that irresistible surface commotion, drawing big flathead up to strike in the shallows.
I’ll walk you through how I worked these swim baits to maximise their action and share some tips for targeting flathead in skinny water. The shallow flats can be tricky, but when the hits come, they’re explosive!

3 Days Fishing the Shallows for Big Flathead
มุมมอง 8K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
Spent three days chasing dusky flathead in shallow water to kick off the season, and it didn’t disappoint! The fish were fired up, and I put a mix of lures to work, including OSP Bent Minnows, a Shimano Arma Joint Swim Bait, Daiwa Bait Junkie Jerk Shads, and Duo Tide Minnows. These lures excelled in the shallows, drawing big flathead out of their ambush zones. Throughout the video, I’ll break d...

Back chasing dusky flathead on the flats, but this time I've added a diving lure into my arsenal, using this Daiwa double clutch 95! Hey get your self some rv lures made in tuncurry and or some crossfire lures . Ps zenaq rock i got 6 its an addiction 😅
A good person to ask about leader for flattys on topwater would probs be nev
The editing is great!
Thank you so much! I spent a longgg time making this so that means a lot ☺️
R.I.P Mr Pootuffy! Bring on fishing with Josh!
Hahaha! onwards and upwards 😁
Josh good buddy, what is that magic looking rod you're using, brand name and length thanks
Thank you!! 🙏 The rod I'm using is a Zenaq Snipe 7 foot 6 RG model (the black rod) and a Millerods Beast Buster LM also 7 foot 6 (This is the rod with the blue camo grips) The list of all the rods I use is generally always in the video description if you're interested
What size bent minnow
Hey man! This was a 130mm OSP bent minnow :)
Could use 12lb if you wanted most the time with the big bents etc you won’t ever have the leader rubbing in there mouths . Once you pin them just got light !! And I find better action and easier to work the lures with the lighter leader. Nice one bro those snips are perfect for the flats flattys 🎉
Yeah I agree! Only ever had a few take a bent minnow deep out of probably near 100 big fish caught on them! Thank you for the advice brother :)) And yeah the snipes are such an awesome rod! Thanks for watching legend 🤙

Hey man I absolutely love your videos I’m a really keen fisho as well I’m up north rn chasing some dream fish Ik you probably won’t see this but if you can give my comment a shout out in your next video it would mean a lot to me thank you and keep up the good quality videos
Thank you so much man! That means a lot 😁 I will try if I remember to, but I have many videos that I have already filmed and am editing, so it'll be quite a while before anything filmed past me seeing this will be out! But again, thank you for the kind words, plenty more videos on the way 🤙
@ your a legend man thank you for responding to my comment
Awesome video mate, just wondering where’d u get those rod holders from?
Thank you so much dude! They're from BCF, just the Berkley rod racks :)
Thanks heaps bro, flatty master 👑🙇♂️
What a magic spot, some awesome lizards.
Was super fun! Thank you for watching :))
Hey mate. Good fishing. Just me but I feel 16lb is about right. If iv got an expensive lure on like that Shimano I’d think 20lb. I really don’t think the Flathead care what leader you use. Can you check that Certate to see if it’s got line twist. No one believes me 😂
Yeah I think so too! I also use 20lbs for expensive lures haha! Yeah I had a bit of line twist, I take it out every couple session by towing the line behind the boat but hadn't done it in for a few sessions in this vid! Most of the twist is gone now 🤙 Thanks for watching!
@Pootuffy Hey can someone explain line twist to me? Such as does it happen more to big bent minnow?
@@wayofenergy Line twist in braided fishing line occurs when the line rotates around itself, creating coils or tangles. Think of it literally like a raspberry twist lolly or something where the braided line has literally twisted over itself. Using a bent minnow lure increases the likelihood of line twist because these lures often spin or rotate unpredictably during the retrieve due to their irregular shape and darting action. This erratic movement rotates the line, especially if a swivel isn’t used, resulting in more twists over time. Swivels reduce line twist because instead of twisting the line, the lure will just rotate the swivel around which means the actual line won't get twisted as much.
@Pootuffy Great explanation thanks. So is it recommended to use snap swivel with bent minnows? How can I identify is i have line twist?
@@wayofenergy Hey mate. You only really get it with braid. Have a look how the line is sitting on your spool. You should be able to see up close if it has a twist in it.
waiting for those softglides to be used
if John sends some my way I'll be sure to make a film out of it! Spent too much on lures this year already
@ oh bro i could imagine, ill give you my ones

What combos were you using?
Hey man, they're all listed in the video description! :)
Mate, so nice to see you back! everyone missed you!!
Thats so nice to hear brother!! Thank you for the support, more vids coming soon :))
awesome video! what size duo tide minnow is that? and what color? would love to try it at my local flats. :)
Thank you! 😊 It was a 175mm Duo Tide minnow in Prism Sardine colour I believe it's called! Good luck with the fishing, I hope you get some good ones!
Hey mate what size and weight jigheads were you using to match the jerkshads?
Hey bro, I used a combination of 7/0 TT 1/4 ounce and 8/0 BKK jig head round elite 8/0 5 grams
Hey mate what’s your favourite diver for flathead
Probably a duo tide minnow for shallows 0.5-1 metres deep and a Daiwa Double Clutch in anything over a metre, but only when there's not much weed in the water
Josh this is so great. Well done. Really beautiful intro; smashing the new video camera. Was worth the wait. Hoping for more over the summer!
Thank youuu!! The camera definitely makes a big difference, I'm so happy with it!! Plenty more coming soon 😁
Nice Bro so good to see you back at it. Great vid 👍

Thanks heaps legend 🤙
This is video has a studio ghibli charm to it ❤
I am really glad you said that, because that film style inspires me a lot! Thank you so much for watching 😊
@@Pootuffy your welcome loving your content it’s a relaxing thing to watch on the train home after a long days work. It’s great to see someone do something fresh when comes to presenting fishing content and it could bode well for your algorithm too if this becomes your aesthetic.
That means so much to hear you enjoy the videos :) I aim to stick to this sort of style moving forwards, they definitely take a bit longer to film and edit, but it's really fun and I'd rather put out better quality videos instead of making sure I'm constantly uploading. Another film should be out in the coming days, so stick around for that! Again, thank you for the support 😊
That intro turned me on immensely
HAHAH well I'm very glad 😂 Thanks for watching brother
Nice one bro
Cheers brother!
Love the video man what pound leader were you using for the flathead in this video?
Hey man! Thank you so much 🤙 The leader I was using was 16lbs ocean fluorocarbon for the soft plastics and bent minnows and 18lbs Daiwa Fluorocarbon for the swim bait and Jerk Baits! Hope this helps :))
@ thank you heaps. I thought you would be using heavier to be honest because I have heard that 20 pound is a bit to light for big flathead
Flathead aren’t usually leader shy, so you can use leaders up to 30lb when throwing bigger lures without much trouble. That said, most people I know stick to 14-16lb unless they’re casting really big lures or fishing near structure. Personally, I can’t recall a time when a flathead has broken me off on 16lb or heavier leader. I’ve definitely lost a few fish on 12lb, but 16lb has held up reliably. There have been some close calls, though-I’ve seen some serious chafing on the leader after landing a big fish (you’ll see a good example of this in an upcoming video). Lately, I’ve been experimenting with 18lb and 20lb leaders, but I’m still convinced that 16lb is the sweet spot.
@ ok thank you so much I look forward to more videos
How far do you cast out and do you get snagged often fishing these spots.
I cast as far as I can, probably 30-40 metres if the wind is right! and I get snagged A LOT!! Probably lose a couple lures every time I fish here
@ going there tomorrow
What jig head are you using and could I use bait?
I think they were 1/8 ounce TT size 1. Bait would work but you would get snagged a lot
Love the work worth the wait
Thank you brother 💪
Well done Josh, I’m so glad to see you back.
Very happy to be back! Plenty more on the way now 😁
Awesome dad, I would want to see it too if I were him 😂
Hahaha he's very happy to have a feature in the film, I don't know if you can hear, but he also showed the fish on FaceTime to the shopkeeper lady in the store he was in 😂
