Exploring the Weird World of Mario Manga: My Review of Super Mario Manga Mania
In this video, I dive into the fascinating-and sometimes bizarre-world of Super Mario Manga Mania, the English translation of Japan's beloved Mario manga, Super Mario-Kun. After stumbling upon this gem at a bookstore, I was eager to see what American audiences have been missing all these years. From its unconventional humor to a heartfelt, raw final story that sheds light on the author’s personal journey, this manga surprised me in more ways than one.
I'll explore why Super Mario-Kun’s unique mix of humor and rapid-fire jokes might feel strange to Western readers, what makes its slapstick style distinct, and how translating these puns must have been a huge challenge. I also took a colorful approach-literally-to understand the manga's detailed, line-heavy art style better.
Whether you’re a Mario fan, a manga lover, or just curious about the cultural quirks in Japanese humor, come along for this deep dive. And don’t miss my thoughts on the surprisingly touching story at the end, where the author opens up about grief and resilience. Plus, let me know in the comments: what's your favorite Mario game?
Hope you enjoy the video, and as always, remember to be your best self!
Chapters:
0:00 - Intro
3:03 - How this Book Came to Be
4:59 - I Was Unprepared
7:31 - Breaking Down the Book
9:45 - This was more fun than I expected it to be
12:48 - The Last Story Hits Hard
16:40 - Final Thoughts and Recommendation

Canon Events, The Purpose of Them, and YOU (My First Comic Con Panel)
มุมมอง 41หลายเดือนก่อน
My panel presentation from #FanX comic con at Salt Lake City. When characters exist for decades at a time, and events keep happening, its good to remember the core events that define a character and keep those in mind when adapting or creating them for ourselves. In this presentation given live, we discuss what these events are, what is the purpose of them, and how we can effectively apply them...

SQKTJL HAD FOOTAGE IN 2020!?!!?
@Sonshinestudios-o3c the first trailer was released then. But its also worth remembering the game had several lengthy delays for quality control. It was delayed close to a year.
@ dang, I did not remember that
Written by Bill Willingham?! Ok, I'm going to ignore that moving forward. While I understand the thought of superheroes not endorsing a candidate for president, I feel the heroes wouldn't be protecting the interests of the public if they didn't condemn the candidacy of someone like Lex Luthor, for example, who actually was elected president at some point in DC continuity. Imagine that, a supervillain criminal narcissist being elected president... Don't officially endorse a candidate because you're supposed to protect everyone. At the same time, people should be reminded who the supervillains are.
@rangereric18 In this case, there's nothing to be said about any of these candidates, and it seems none of them win because the next US president we see in DC comics after this is President Obama. Had this been written now, I believe it would have been different. If we had a story released, say, this year, where angry evil buisnessman and all around terrible person Lex Luthor was going for a second term, the story would likely take a very different turn with very different results and a very different message. The pattern I've noticed most often is that, rather than speaking against specific politicians, superheroes and comics as a whole will usually take stances on policies. I'm reading Doomsday Clock right now and that's a brilliant example. I haven't read the buildup to Lex Luthor's presidency so i dont know what everyone's work and actions were like then, but I do know after he was elected, Superman was vocal about his disapproval and we got a great story where he and Batman were pitted against the rest of the super community and the nation because of it. So it's not like criticisms of politicians doesn't happen all the time, it just wasn't the focus of this mini series. Great perspective! I'm going to go chase down the buildup to the luthor presidency and see what's up. Thanks!
For sheer pick up and play, my favorite is Super Mario World, however for best overall experience, I'm gonna go with Super Mario RPG.
@@Mechajared world is great! I think it might be the best 2D game in his series.
I like the music in the game
@sandracampbell5590 Super Mario Galaxy was probably the first game where I recognized the music in a game as an important part of the experience
My favorite Mario Game is Galaxy. What's yours?
Religion is important and people should be involved in it? ...I'm sorry but that was grossly irresponsible to say. People shouldn't have to get into a cult to find meaning and community; especially the harmful religions such as the Abrahamic ones.
Hey, thanks for sharing your thoughts-I can tell this sparked a strong reaction, and I get that. My intention was more to highlight the value of a personal belief system or moral framework, rather than to push a specific organization or label. We all have our own ‘moral measuring sticks,’ so to speak, whether they’re spiritual, secular, philosophical, or based on personal values. I've looked back on that one specific sentence a lot in the last four years and I see how it was a clunky choice of words, so I apologize if it came across as suggesting that everyone needs a religious label or community to find meaning. That’s not what I meant. I try really hard to keep the channel a safe place and I think I've gotten better at that over the years since this video. But it sounds like you enjoyed the rest of the video so that's good! Thanks for giving it a chance.
@@ComicCrash I sincerely did enjoy your video; but yeah, I strongly take issue with that statement. To me, it's like someone saying _"You gotta start smoking cigarettes; it'll calm your nerves."_ I know for someone on the inside, that sounds harsh and uncharitable; but, as someone who was indoctrinated for about half my life in the Roman Catholic Church; when you finally find your way out, you look back and realize you were inside the belly of a beast.
What is your opinion on Homelander’s character? Is he well written is he poorly written in your eyes? or is it something else?
@dylanhudec979 i apologize for the long reply, but i used to teach a collegiate course in comic book writing and you scratched that part of my brain: i haven't watched much of The Boys or read it at all. I don't love extreme violence like that and couldn't make it past the first half of the first episode. So I can't say from first-hand experience, but characters don't grow to his level of popularity without being well done. The hallmarks of a good character are 1) consistency in reasoning, 2) conflict in personal beliefs and wants vs. What they need to have or do (this can be reversed in the case of characters like Captain America or Superman where they are undeniably good) and 3) a solid purpose and direction. Spider-man is a great example. More often than not, he acts out of a sense of responsibility and that informs his choices. He often wants things like a normal life, but he has to sacrifice that for the greater good. This drives Spider-man's purpose and direction which is to use his power to always be helping. It works the same for villians, except villians will disregard what they need for what they want. Anakin doesn't want anyone to be a slave again and is angry at the senate for not acting. He wants to have power for himself to solve those problems, but what he needs is to learn how to love and to let go. He chooses power over this lesson, which leads to his downfall and his purposeful direction- to seek endless power forever. Those are some quick parameters I'd suggest for defining a "good character". So, what do you think of Homelander?
@ as much as I would love to explain his backstory and his character but I have a hard time trying to analyze characters but I’ll try my best So vought was built in the year 1982 they created multiple superhumans in the past called supes like Homelander. Homelander was born in a vought lab and after he was born they put him in a experiment chamber they did experiments on him and put him inside another chamber called the oven In many many other terrible things they treated him like dirt training him to become the greatest & strongest hero but they didn’t care of showing him love they just treated him not like a human being but like a product after this he grew violent behavior the older he got treating him more like dirt when he was finally grown up they believed he was ready to be the greatest hero but since he was shut off from the world during his childhood he was unaware of how things worked during his first time on the job of being a hero (unlike how he normally acts during heroic stuff since he doesn’t care that much anymore) on his first day He actually tried his best to be a decent hero He was also mimicking the heroes he saw on TV and he was doing so well but things went really terrible after one of the crooks grabbed one of the hostages with a bent gun that Homelander broke after he says it’s hard to hold a gun when it’s 500°F he uses his heat vision on the crooks gun but it exploded when he was trying to melt it after that the crooks hand was blown off because of the explosion and the hostage was killed apparently the crooks were calling him a monster even knowing they were the one’s holding hostages in the first place after one of them kept calling him a monster homelander snap and ripped off the one of the crooks jaw off realizing what he done he tries to say he didn’t mean too but the hostages were calling him a monster Homelander snaps again and kills everyone the crooks and the hostages after snapping back into reality, realizing what he’s done he was scared and confused not knowing what to do but then out of know where black noir shows up Homelander thinking he’s about to call him out for what he’s done so he starts chasing him trying to kill him after the whole building exploded by homelander using his heat vision too much but Homelander was fine but after he saw that black noir survived somehow he was getting ready to end him with his heat vision but then he saw that he had one of the last surviving hostages homelander didn’t want to kill the last hostage but black noir snapped the last hostage neck killing the hostage after that black noir (without speaking) told homelander that he was on his side trying to help him covering up his mistakes so Homelander follows along with it and after the incident he was on the news broadcasts spreading lies to the world and not telling the world what really happened after that Homelander got quick popularity as everyone was cheering for him This is where he got thirsty for attention and fame and glory but realizing that black noir was also getting most of the attention he was a little salty so he flies away I think after that Homelander becomes the person that we all know him for today an awful person with unearned power and then came along other other supes some good some bad some neutral if only vought treated their supes as people they could’ve had a brighter future (I did my best)
@dylanhudec979 great! Sounds like he has solid motivation, solid direction, and you find him intriguing (the most important element).
Hope you enjoyed this obscure little book from DC Comics backlog! Now go Vote! And if you missed this message before you went to the polls, make sure you vote next time! Stay focused, stay informed, and stay awesome!

Trump 2024!!!
Great video!!
Thanks! Making videos like this is a lot of fun. I especially enjoy the cutaway bits!
Minus the comment on religion, agreed 100%. Writing Superman as "evil" or writing the "he has to go too far" story is juvenile, poor work for edgelords looking for tje cheap heat of violating tje sacred. Superman is and was always meant to be a standard-bearer for what is best in humanity, emodied in the alien son of another world- the migrant. He always finds the better way. He always takes the high ground because it's what he knows to be right. 💙
@ashleyvanhammer3448 if I were to go back, I'd use a more inclusive example. My point was i wanted to highlight the importance of some kind of defined, personal belief system. But I'm glad you liked the video outside that! Thankfully, between "my adventures with", "Superman and Lois" and the James Gunn movie and even the starman meme, I think DC got the message that we really want the good guy.
I love evil Superman because I see nothing left for Superman to do as a hero.
Interesting fact: Tom Welling is now farming in real life.
I would like to see a Season 5 of L&C: The New Adventures of Superman. Cain and Hatcher are trying to make it happen.
Hey, I got one for you! Do you remember/know the traditional full address for Clark Kent's Metropolis address? 👓
I watched your trigger finger. 😬 Develop the habit of keeping it off trigger until you are ready to use it.
@BaptistJoshua good point. I agree. Even with a prop. The shotgun was a foam block and it didn't even have a trigger, but your point is still correct.
@@ComicCrash Thanks, man. 😊👍🏻
Nice job! Hope you do manage to complete it!
@theretrogamer1 thanks! I actually have a significant update I did to it. I put it on my tiktok but I should make sure it's here too.
@@ComicCrash thanks! I have the dc reprint but your reprint is a lot better I saw the original Superman movie yesterday!
I was there thank you for not filming the audience. Was a amazing panel to help me with my fanfic writing. Please come back and do more.
@AlexTheTransAndNerdyRaccoon oh I'd love to come back! Seriously one of my favorite moments in my time with comics and writing. And generally I don't like to put people on camera that don't explicitly tell me they want to be on camera. Not only is that impolite, but you will always get a better performance from people who want to be there, ya know? And I'm glad it was helpful for you. Fan fiction is a ton of fun and it gets better when you can keep established characters consistent. What fandom is your fiction in?
@@ComicCrash X-Men '97 specifically and I say thank you because not many people leave out faces in conventions. I really enjoyed your panel more than most I went to.
9:43 I am the one who called detective 😎 Great job again, Taylor!
The confidence it takes to do something like this, sheesh
I've only wanted to do it for YEARS! seriously one of the coolest things I've done.
Great panel my friend, you very articulately told us about why canon events are important and why they play a big role in character development. Congrats my friends, congrats.
Thanks Jared! I'm very fortunate to have been given this opportunity and it meant a lot to me. I'm excited to do it again next year if they'll have me!
I think what i like about the Funko figures is that they're affordable (at least when buying new, secondary market is a whole different beast). Even "cheap" figurines and statues are closer to $50, which isn't too far out there but can feel like a bit much for something that's just going to sit on a shelf. And that's not even looking at the higher end figures which regularly retail for triple digits. So getting a cute little figure of a favorite character for less than $20 is pretty nice.
@grantbaugh2773 it is pretty nice. I appreciate Marvel Legends and DC Multiverse for the same reason. Highly detailed figures for $25? Yes please!
... ... ... "Comics don't make noise" That was fantastic 😂
Again, a HUGE thanks to r00 for making this series really just pop!
The gameplay starts at 7:41 So excited to have r00 onboard for the game now! Saving gotham is more fun with a friend!
Thank you for sharing this story. I love hearing other fans Star Wats stories
Star Wars brings people together far more often than it pushes them apart.
@@ComicCrashI agree with you 100%
Thanks @ComicCrash!
