How to Access and Transmit in 60m / 5 MHz in FT-991A
FIRST OF ALL: Ensure that your config clause 034 "MEM GROUP" is set to "DISABLE".
1. Enter the Memory mode by pressing the V/M button
2. Select the MCH menu button,
3. Use the MULTI encoder to scroll the memories
4. Ensure to use the LOCK button to avoid VFO bumps that can move your radio to M-TUNE mode which will prevent your transmission.

Testing the FT-991A in 9600 bps FM Packet mode
The FT-991A does support 9600 bps FM packet mode - with the catch that it can't be done using the USB port - the transmitted audio must come from the RTTY/DATA port. In this video I'm demoing the 9600 transmission mode, and the key differences in the transmitted audio. Configuring FT-991A Repeaters with Odd Splits with Memory Split
Do you have a repeater which have odd splits, which requires a TX frequency that is off the general settings? Use the "Memory Split" functionality. The target memory will present a "DUP" tag. Here's how to set it. This is explained on manual page 105.

What is Band Stacking? And QMB? How to use it? An demonstrative example in Yaesu FT-991/A.
Band Stacking is one of the nice features of the FT-991/A: It allows for three different settings for the same band. Be imaginative: Three different modes, three different settings, three different operation modes - all in the same band. QMB on the other hand, is a 5-memory round-robin quick access memory, intended for quick storage and quick recall. See the examples in the video!

how long did it take you to do the job?
Let's say, 2h to build the board, another hour with an expert replacing the main unit USB hub, spare like 5-6h to go full circle.
Nice and easy explanation, and quick
Thanks for the video. I learned something new today. I've wondered how-to do this since I got my 991A, many years ago. Cheers!
do you have instructions? I'm a newbie

Do you have to change any xmit setting before you transmit on SSB or Digital FT-8 ? ( I’m new to the 60M band )
Hi Jim, check this article: github.com/rfrht/FT-991A/wiki/How-To-Do-FT8-In-60M-With-FT-991A
@@rodrigoabfreire3490 I’m good on that front in the article. I should rephrase the question, do you have to change the transmit bandwidth when doing SSB or FT-8 from its default settings. Is it Different from normal 20 M setting ? Thank you for your reply.

Thanks for the video. Does the USB port on the 991A work for 1200 bps? What are the settings for that. I am trying to use a key at 1200 bps on Winlink but have issues configuring it. Thanks in advance.
It definitely should work, as I have tested my 991A as an APRS I-Gate on 1200. Can't help on WinLink, apologies.
Is there a MAC version of the software?
voicemeeter.com/ says it's windows only
May i ask were the waterfall is located or the app u may be used as i cant seem to find that?
Hey! That's HDSDR, and an entirely different animal. Check this out: github.com/rfrht/FT991A-PAT/wiki
1st of all Great video, Iam looking forward to testing on my 991A, would this be compatible with the 101MP or likeminded radios??
Hey VK2LQ! Definitely works just the same for the 101, even a IC7300 etc- as long as the audio is done via USB.
I have connected the 101MP via USB cable great for recording, i just need to work the command lines LOL great work@@rodrigoabfreire3490

hello and grazie mille. If you are talking about power on and power off, there are shell scripts for both functions.
It'd be nice to know what the hell any of that actually means, rather than just having us follow a recipe.
In a nutshell 10 memory banks on the FT991A are programmed for the 60M band which is broken down into 10 channels that we are secondary users on. No need to mess with the Center Channel freq. and Amateur offset freq. because it's set already and you can't accidently change it and cause interference by operating error to the primary users. :)
you are a life saver :) I had big problems putting a different input. 🥳
Great thanks!
What software are you using here?
The mixer is VoiceMeeter Banana. The Panadapter/waterfall is HDSDR plus a RTL/SDR dongle.
@@rodrigoabfreire3490 Thank you! And how is this connected to the FT-991A? I want to do packet radio, would I need an additional SDR dongle for that?
@@TheUrbanHam It's connected via the USB port. In order to do packet radio, you will need a modem. There are some software that can act as a modem, so the USB port carries the audio signal that will be sent to the software and encode/decode data. Look for software packet TNC. Good luck!
So what is exactly gained by this exercise?
Read the wiki: github.com/rfrht/FT991A-PAT/wiki
Details...it's all in the details but from this video I wouldn't know where to start, for instance what protects you SDR receiver? Are you using headset for microphone audio? PTT? etc.
Hello there! The SDR taps on the RX IF line, so no strong signal over there - and the amplifier board switches off the IF line during TX. I use a headset in the computer for voice comms. For PTT events, sometimes I use VOX, other times I use a foot PTT to trigger the TX. Check the project's wiki: github.com/rfrht/FT991A-PAT/wiki - over there you will get all the technical aspects of the board and how to implement it. To see how I did the audio via the computer, check this: github.com/rfrht/Voicemeeter-FT-991A/wiki
@@rodrigoabfreire3490 Boa tarde, Rodrigo ! Grato pela atenção ! Tudo entendido. Abraço !
Greetings and Felicitations. Will this procedure allow for 2 meters to function from 144Mhz to 148Mhz on a Yaesu FT-991a configured for Japanese use?
No.

Hello - apologies for the delay. I have modded my FT-991A to include a SDR dongle within it. This is how I did it: github.com/rfrht/FT991A-PAT/wiki
hi, the rig´s cascade spectrum display uses a yaesu sdr, any chance to take I Q signals out from it?
Hello Diego. Unfortunately, not. The Scope Unit provides an analog signal to the CPU, which is parsed and then rendered on the display. There's no I/Q transformation that could be tapped.

Bom dia Fredson!
Thank you so much for this! Yaesu didn't do a very good job explaining the procedure, and its not exactly something someone would be able to guess on their own.
or just buy an ICOM IC-7300
No. The IC7300 does *not* provide the functionality that is achieved here. No I/Q output for using down further by any SDR/GNURadio application.
7300 has only HF no V/U

Jou have to program the enc, the tone and in RPT in simp in the RX outerwise you can not open the repeater. Also jou must set in the menu both ARS to off, otherwise you can’t program repeaters with various shift-frequenties.
Thanks so much for sharing. I have searched and looked for months with no success on how to manually skip memory entries during a memory scan.
Can you explain why this mod is done? I don’t understand what you gained. The radio has a screen already. Thanks!
A larger, comfortable, zoomable, configurable, shiftable - and a "click-to-tune" functionality from the PC. Also, the ability to check other signal of interest without tuning out from the radio central frequency.
Nice Video i go to test whit my FT991A an just the first button is configured :) 73 ON8MJ
Congratulations, Joel! And enjoy the journey!!! Let us know the outcome!!
Hi! Can I just clear the QMB entries? Let's say I store there a frequency of a station calling CQ in a contest which has a pile-up and I want to check it later. I could quicky jump to its frequency and back. However, after working it, I'd like to clear it, otherwise, old rubbish will be kept in the remaining banks and by short-pressing the RCL/STO button, I have to cycle through already "expired" frequencies...
Hi Ferdinand! Man, you can't "clear" the content. You can surely replace them all with some other content to avoid confusion. But clearing content isn't possible for QMB.
@@rodrigofreire7604 Thanks. Fortunately, for the sake of usability in my case, a short press of STO/RCL goes for the latest stored frequency and V/M jumps back. So there is no need to jump through the whole QMB stack every time you want to quick-check the CQer whether the pile-up weakened... On IC-7300 you go back by the same MPAD button, so you cycle throuh the whole stack to get back to the original frequency, however, you can clear the buffer, so it's fine too.
