Alpamayo Los Cedros Trek, Cordillera Blanca - Magnificent and tough
Alpamayo Los Cedros Trek: Seven days backpacking trip from Pomabamba, Jancacucho to Hualcayan in the heart of the Cordillera Blanca
Huascaran National Park - Ancash region, Peru
11-17 June 2024
Itinerary:
When I started planning my 2024 Huaraz Peru hiking trip I knew I wanted to hike in the Alpamayo Cordillera Blanca region but I was not sure what backpacking trip would work best for me between the Alpamayo Circuit (which essentially includes the Santa Cruz trek and the Los Cedros trek) or only the Alpamayo Los Cedros. Eventually I opted for the latter because it would give me the time and opportunity to do day hikes to the Laguna Jancarurish area as well as the Laguna Yuraccocha day hike in a manageable 7 days trip. These two areas were high on my list, and the full Alpamayo Circuit would have stretched to over 11 days, which felt a bit too ambitious for a solo backpacking trip in the Andes. One day I will probably do the Santa Cruz trek on its on. So, for my Alpamayo Los Cedros trek, the following was my 7 days itinerary:
Day 1: Early Bus ride from Huraz to Pomabamba. Then car ride to Jancapampa from Jancacucho and short hike to the Jancacucho camp
Day 2: Jancacucho to Huillca via Yanacon Pass
Day 3: Huillca to Jancarurish via Mesapata and Gara Gara passes
Day 4: Laguna Jancarurish, Jancarurish Camp to Ruinapampa Camp
Day 5: Ruinapampa to Huishcash Camp via Vientunan and Osoruri passes
Day 6: Hike to Laguna Yuraccocha, return to Huishcash Camp
Day 7: Huishcash Camp to Hualcayan
Trip total: 48.40 mi 15,492 ft elevation gain.

Hike / Trek Notes:
A magnificent solitary trek deep into the Cordillera Blanca: ten stars out of five; no tourist attraction aftertaste/feeling as you get in the busy camps of the Huayhuash Circuit. The scenery is second to none and certainly as great as the Huayhuash landscape. The trail is great, proofed by hundred of years of local use. The weather was moody for me as I got six days with afternoon rains out of seven, which made it for a pretty tough backpacking trip considering the overall elevation and the high camps. But honestly, I prefer cloudy skies to completely clear ones when I'm hiking, so no complaints here. Despite the rainy weather, I absolutely loved this trek; my favorite of my Peruvian Andes experience so far. Apart from local people I only met two other hikers traveling with an agency crew during the first part of the trip. I camped alone most nights, which I prefer and enjoy.
The Alpamayo is a Jewel of a mountain, but many other Nevados along the trek were also incredibly beautiful, starting with the amazing hanging glaciers and cascades of the first night in Jancacucho towered by the imposing Nevado Pucajirca. The Santa Cruz massif is absolutely impressive and Lagunas Cullicocha and Yuraccocha are two incredible glaciar lakes; so is Laguna Jancarurish, right under the Alpamayo. This was a memorable backpacking trip for me, one that I would do it again in a heartbeat. It is not easily accessible (admittedly the bus ride from Huaraz to Pomabamba is pretty long and tough) and the weather in the interior parts of the Cordillera Blanca can be often rainy. Also the route is pretty isolated. These are all reasons why the Alpamayo Los Cedros trek is not very popular. But the landscape is incredibly beautiful and varied. I loved it and enjoyed it very much.

    Great video. I have seen some of these places, and some are on the want list. I do NOT want to deal with Hailey Pass again. So slippery and I was going up. Pictures of mine from the bottom indicate the trail splits near the top, but I did not see that. There was one 15 foot section that was loose small gravel and sloped outward. My steps were baby steps to get thru that. I have never seen anybody take pics or video during the climb/descent. On the topic of bears - back in 2015, my first trip to the Winds there was talk of black bears in the cirque. I also have never seen a bear, or bear sign in 9 trips - except one. My wife saw a huge male grizzly walk thru our campsite while I was inside the tent packing. I saw the prints to verify it was a large male grizzly. But there is little ber food in the Winds compared to Glacier NP and Canada.

    It looked like maybe you had a bear canister for your food. If so what kind did you use. It's been several decades since I've been to the Winds and now I see that the grizzly has expanded its range and now are in the Winds. I always when I could, hang my food but trees are hard to find in some areas.

    • @TrailsOfWander
      @TrailsOfWander หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I carried a bear canister for the Wind River backpacking trips. I use a BearVault BV500 which I can carry 7 days of food with. It is 2.5 LB of extra weight and certainly bulky, but I prefer to use a bear canister in bear country as it takes away the guessing of where and how to hang the food bag. As you mentioned, when camping near or above tree line hanging food bags is often not an option. That being said I have never seen any bear in the Winds (nor bear tracks or scat) and I met other hikers who do not use bear canisters and said they have not encountered bears in the Winds as well. I have not hiked in the northern most part of the range, where I think grizzly expanded their range (but I am not 100% sure as I have not researched the topic...).

    How did you get to/from trail head? Rent a car or hire a driver?

    • @TrailsOfWander
      @TrailsOfWander 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We hired a driver from Huaraz. Pretty steep price I recall, but the alternative was to get a Collectivo to Carhuaz from Huaraz (which is easy) and then find a private ride to Shonquilpampa and walk from there; our driver took us directly to the gate of the Quebrada and waited for us there. The issue for a day hike to Laguna 513 is to have enough time to complete the out and back hike, so having a direct ride from Huaraz made it time efficient and predictable. This blog was very helpful to scope out the hike: travelmademedoit.com/laguna-513/

    • @TrailsOfWander

      No I did not, but I saw other hikers fishing at the Cook Lakes. Not sure about Wall or Spider Lakes as I did not see anybody there.

      I did not think the Polcura Traverse was sketchy in any part. Some steep parts, but nothing that I would be concerned as far as sketchy or tricky. Beautiful hike.

    Looking forward to trying this on my next trip. I love the East side of the park. Did your route follow the AllTrails track reasonably closely?

    • @TrailsOfWander
      @TrailsOfWander 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For what I remember yes, for the most part I was following the AllTrails track, except for some short deviations for video and photography. In any case I thought orientation was pretty straight forward on this hike. Thanks for watching.

      Hi Iris, I sure remember. Rigatti was very nice! Funny you contacted me about the video of the Latemar hike. I am actually working on it right now and I should be able to publish it before the end of this week. So, look out for it. I am so behind in video production, I still have four or five from 2023 that I have not done yet... Maybe too much hiking :) - Enjoy your hiking and keep in touch.

    Ciao, come stai? Beautiful trekking, wonderful nature!!! I've always been fascinated by volcanoes, the arid landscapes, desert, snow and rocks, I see you like them too, if you like volcanoes you should go, sooner or later to Mount Etna, if you come back to Italy. Cheers!!!

      Ciao, bene grazie. Volcán Descabezado was a great backpacking trip with an incredible landscape. More volcano videos to come from my recent trip to Chile. I don't have any plan for a trip back to Italy this year but a hike up Mount Etna sounds cool for sure!
