Hey, my name is Luis and I'm a self employed handyman. I would like to share with you some of the things I have learned in the trade and the projects I'm working on. Thank you for visiting my channel.
Mom's Kitchen Makeover | Cabinet Painting
Hello everybody!
I wanted to share with you a small project I worked on for my mom. This was actually done about two years of uploading this video. It was my gift to my mom for Mother's Day of 2022. The kitchen has seen a lot of use since then and I'm happy to report that the paint is still going strong!

I love that you and your family do this together,,your videos are so helpful and your delivery its very soothing
@@dog_biter thank you as well for watching and leaving a comment, I’m glad you like my videos.
@@luisangelmedia4459 are the beams available at Home Depot? 4x8?
How good do this mini splits work in the AZ heat?
Awesome job. I am actually looking for someone to help me with this. How do I get in touch?
@@iheanyiukaegbu9617 Thank you! You can email me at luisangelmedia@gmail.com
So your addition is 13 feet wide/ deep?
@@sixgunsue8 it’s 35 feet along the side of the house and 13 feet extending away from the house. You always want to have at least 12 inches over your concrete. You can do more or less.
important details I'd like to see.. getting the angle of rafters
@@dog_biter thank you for letting me know. The angle of the rafters will depend on the span of the roof and the sizing of your beams. But here’s how you can find the angle of the rafters; start by taking the length, away from the house that your rafters will be. For every 12 inches, you’re going to pitch the roof 1/2 inch. So for this roof that is 12 feet long, that’s 6 inches. Next, measure the bottom of the ledger board to the floor and take away 6 inches from that, this measurement is now the height from the floor to the top of the horizontal beams where the rafters will sit on. I hope this helps.
Awesome video. I love the details. Price breakdown would be nice too.
@@jelie2k thank you for watching and commenting. The labor for this work was around $4,000 and materials for this was $2,500 at the time of building it.
How far apart are posts?
@@toddytwotones2905 on this build they are about 9 feet and 6 inches on center. Here is a video describing the positioning of the posts th-cam.com/video/C-FREXA03x0/w-d-xo.html
Luis, great video! How did you determine the slop from the house to the poles? Is there a lasar guide i can buy? The roof of my house is exactly the same, it has the eaves and raptor tails.
@@GMoney-f7n the slope is determined by the type of materials and type of roof. This kind of roof a “lean to” roof with these kind of materials, the roofing rolls, need a minimum of .5/12 slope or half inch slope every 12 inches. So for 12 feet roof span, that’s 6 inches from the bottom of the ledger board to the top of the horizontal beam. The rafters are sloped down 6 inches.
Luis…thanks for the quick reply! My plan is to do pretty much the same style as you are doing. If send you my email can you email me directly?
@@GMoney-f7n you can email me Luisangelmedia@gmail.com
Thanks Luis! you get an email at from gavilagon.
Hi Luis, did you get my email? I sent you another just in case.
So you removed the eves, and covered them with the ledger board, how is air going to enter the roof, and help dry out the roof inside the attic. Thats what those vent holes in the eves were for.
@@nicklindsey3099 not all eaves have holes. Here in AZ, we have big vent holes in front of the “A” and the back of the “A” side of the house. Air circulates in and out of these two vents and sometimes you’ll have houses with two wind turbine vents on the roof that spin and draw out air front the attic. So neither on the back side of the house, where we are building, or the front of the house, will you find holes on the eaves.
@@luisangelmedia4459 might wanna add those details in the video next time, so guys like me don't have to have to ask/say the obvious statements
@@nicklindsey3099 it’s all good. I love replying back to comments. However, I’ll be sure to add more info on my builds including stuff like this. Thank you.
8:21 Luis, the seams between the osb boards have been taped over with some product. I read we can use duct tape but it doesn’t stick well. What are you using? Thank you for your help
@@Michael-vi2se hello there, nice catch on that. My dad actually used window flashing tape that he had leftover from another job. It’s absolutely not needed and he just wanted somewhere meaningful to use up the rest of it. I’ve built many of these patios and we never done that before.

Awesome video Luis, I’ve been all over TH-cam and this has been the best!
@@TaylorMathe1 thank you!
Why remove?
@@toddytwotones2905 you cannot attach a patio to the eaves coming down the side of the house, they are not strong enough and they are lower level than the house.
Great video Luis! My question is at the bottom of the ledger board do you use some type of gap filler to seal it off?
@@Michael-vi2se you can to make it look better. At my house I left it open because I was curious to see if there would be any water coming down, but it has stayed dried for more than 3 years now. For clients, I do apply a bead of caulking and even paint it if they have the paint on hand, just makes the line look so much better.

Do I need permit to add a patio cover like. 20 by 17 pulgadas
Exceptional video !!!
Thank you!
When you cut the 2nd ledger board at a 45 did you cut the 1st one at 45 as well in order for them to overlap better? Also why didnt you go all the way to the left edge with the ledger? Looks like it is 6" from that corner of the house.
Yes, both ledger boards have been cut in opposite 45s to overlap one another. And we did not go all the way because the home owner had other plans for that side of the patio.
@luisangelmedia4459 What plans does he have for those 6 inches or less ? I wasn't talking about the open side on right with window and no concrete. I meant the little sliver you can't see in the video on left side.
@@javelin13 okay i understand, I thought you meant 6 feet on the right where the window is. So the 6 inches left on the right side is just for looks so the patio can be on the “inside” of the house wall. It’d look a bit odd if the fascia came out flush to the house or maybe not.
Luis, what would I expect to pay for a wood patio cover this size versus an aluminum?
I’ve never done an aluminum patio, but I’m guessing it would be a lot cheaper in labor and materials as it would require less of both. This patio was $4,000 labor and $2,000 materials at the time it was built just so you can get an idea of how much you could save on aluminum.
@@luisangelmedia4459 Thank you for the reply, $6000 sounds super reasonable. Aluminum would actually cost more than double that. I quoted $17000. Wish you were here in cali.
@@Daditoxic1 oh yeah that’s quite a chunk of money!
Can you share the wood sizes for this great project
Vertical posts are 4x6, horizontal beams are 4x8, rafters are 2x6 12 feet long. The fascia is a nominal size of 2x7
Hi Luis! Can I ask you about attach patio cover?
Hello. Yes, you can ask me anything. Or did you mean ask me to see work that you have?
nicely done. And it looks like you use your tools.
Thank you!
On the L flashing and Z flashing, could you get away with only doing L flashing?
It can be possible, although not recommended. The Z bar is important to make sure water does not return back into the stucco.

Hey where do you live I live in Kentucky my parents need somebody to do this for them
Hello there. I’m in Phoenix, AZ. I can’t go, but I hope you guys find someone!
How much total material cost would you be looking at for something like this.
The materials for this was $2,500 back when it was built.
How did you put the hole in concrete ? how is the brace secured to concrete ?
With a hammer drill and a 5/8 masonry bit. Then we used a concrete anchor that goes into the hole and it has a threaded end on the top where the brace goes and is secured by a nut. Let me know if you need the link to the concrete anchor.
Hi Luis - can you explain why you cut the first sheet of self adhering underlayment? How many inches did you overlap each section of the base sheet?
It’s common practice to cut the first section shorter so that when you lay down the cap sheet on top of the base sheet, the seams are not on top of each other which causes a small bump. Each section is overlap 4-6 inches, shown by the markings on the sheet and the glue that is already on the seam.

Were those 4x6 posts? & if so what was the spacing in between the posts?
Yes, they were 4x6 posts. I have a private video that I did for someone regarding posts distance. Tap “read more” th-cam.com/video/C-FREXA03x0/w-d-xo.html
I would never allow anyone to cut the eave off like that.
It’s the only way to add on a patio to a house with eaves. If you attach your ledger board to the fascia of the eaves, it will not pass inspection nor would it be secure.
@@luisangelmedia4459 I was thinking that the ledger board be attached to the wall under the eave.
@@lwh7301 it’d be way too low. You need at least 80 inches clearance at the opposite side where the patio ends.
@@luisangelmedia4459 Is 80 inches clearance specified by code? I only need enough clearance to park my van.
How were you able to cut the stucco so straight?
On this house I did it with a level and marker as I was by myself, but if I’m with a helper we do a chalk line.
Thank you Luis for this video
Thank you as well for watching and leaving a comment.
How do you waterproof the sides of the Ledger board?
That’s the only place where you will have to use the acrylic caulking. I recommend the caulking because it’s paintable, but silicone is best.
How much did the build cost you?
It was about $2,500 materials and $4,000 labor.
What’s the best way to measure for the top plate? Measure inside first?
Depends on how tall your ceilings are. For an 8ft ceiling, the top plate is around 97 inches. However, I wouldn’t let the top plate height determine your patio height, you could go lower or sometimes higher if your hoa allows. The important thing is locating those vertical studs.

thanks for the video its very helpful would like to ask how much would a 40x12 cost? also could you use pavers?
Thank you. A patio that size, and only considering the roof structure, not concrete or the paving, would be closer to $5,500 labor and $3,000 materials. And no, you cannot put this roof over pavers, you need to have footings where the posts will go.
