Tesla 2025.2 Preconditioning when Routing to Third Party Chargers
In late January 2025 Tesla released 2025.2, and among the enhancements was the ability to navigate to non-Tesla fast chargers with CCS or NACS plugs and still turn on the preconditioning of the battery pack. This feature is documented here, and we find out that although the trip planner acknowledges that non-Tesla fast chargers exist, at least so far in this update, for the routes we checked, the trip planner doesn't seem to consider these non-Tesla charging sites in its routing algorithm.

      @@flexor212000 that would be my guess as well about snow tires on this vehicle. And it’s definitely been my experience that snow tires on any vehicle, even low slung front wheel drive cars will turn their capability way up to handle horrible snow conditions. Probably 15 years ago I had studded winter tires on my 2008 Honda Fit Sport, and I was in and out of snow squalls on the west side of the 270 outer belt in central Ohio. So conditions were at times fine for everyone to go 55 mph or so. But entering a low visibility, heavy snowfall squall, I suddenly saw a multi-car pile up blocking all three lanes and the breakdown lane but the snow covered grass on the right was open. I was in the left lane and knew I would be toast from the other traffic coming up behind me and I only had seconds to react. I steered hard right, reduced speed to about 30 mph, and drove through about 6 or more inches of powder in that grass on the right. As I cleared the pile of cars I saw another car flying past my right into a fence and the bushes. I was able to keep motoring along and get back on the highway past the pile up not having been smushed and having Lord knows what happen to me and that little car.

      @skyemalcolm หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jennasweets2682 we had full power and I don’t think the battery got too cold because we were hopping from fast charger to fast charger along the highway. The efficiency and range were pretty bad before slowing down and hitting the really slow conditions documented here. Before and after that we faced wet treated roads, 40 mph head winds, and the fact that I’m a lead foot driver. For the whole trip we used Google built in to find and route to the chargers. Google built in is integrated with the car’s battery management system and therefore knows the state of charge, can send a signal to start warming the battery before a charger if needed to facilitate fast charging, called Fast Charge Prep. We also used manual battery Fast Charge Prep on the way to chargers so that even when we hit Erie and Cleveland in the brutal cold, snow and wind we pulled 190 kW charging speed. I recently posted a video of how to use Google Built in and compare it vs using the miles remaining.

Road trips are rare for most, so you just charge at home overnight like I do. So there's really no waiting. You wake up each morning with a "full tank." Now, in December, I haven't done public charging since August on a trip to vegas from here in LA. That trip required me to stop about 12 minutes in each direction. Did it during lunch and easy. Still, it's not for everyone, but I'm certainly hooked. I still have my gas vehicles, but never really used them other than my motorcycles. Also, no, charging is not slower in the cold. As you approach a charge station, the car conditions the battery, so it will take full charge. But again, you only need public charging on road trips. Quite impressive how the ZDX appeared to eat up those snow miles. Glad you made it safe out the other side... last time I saw anything like that we were in a FWD Bolt EV, white knuckling it to the first available exit. Thanks for the road report.

      @@plugandplayEV leaving I-90 going the wrong way up an on-ramp because everything was jammed up was one of sketchier parts of the trip, and you can see that in the video. Another tricky bit was when we were the only car on the highway later when it was dark, and the snow was really coming down, it just made it hard to discern where I ought to steer to stay on the true path.

    Nope. I have a fading memory of northern life. I am fine now being made fun of for wearing a winter coat in 45 degree weather & it is my own brain making fun of me. Blood has thinned from living south of the mason-dixon line for too long. Looks like a ton of fun though. Glad you were okay and the car did well.

      Thanks Walter! Yeah I love driving in the snow to be honest. I don’t get to do it much lately because while Columbus is quite northerly we just don’t get much snow for whatever reason. And if you do ever take your Lyriq north I would assume it would perform well.

More so if you drive in areas with those biological materials wafting around in the air enough to get sucked into the bottom breather intake on the front of these cars.

    1 year update: the car now has 127,000 miles on it and charging is still nice and fast. I haven’t inspected this radiator area but honestly since I’ve put another 40k miles on it since this video so I suppose there’s a decent chance more dead bugs have made their way into the space.

    So, if my math is correct, these can top out around 200kW on a 400V Tesla? I assume the answer is yes, but can both plugs be used simultaneously on a single unit?

    • @darrenorange2982
      @darrenorange2982 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Correct 500 amps means about 200kw, normally a bit less A model 3 big battery often depending on the year can see nearly 680 amps from a V3 supercharger.

      @skyemalcolm 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@darrenorange2982 yep and with few exceptions CCS Type 1 connectors are limited to a 500 A per the agreed upon standard. However in my experience if you bring a fast charging Tesla with an adapter to a Delta 350, a commonly specified hardware by EVgo, you’ll see as many as 540 Amps and this equates to about 210 kW for my car at a lower state of charge.

      @@fiehlsport oh and sorry yes these units allow for simultaneous charging, on car on each side using two plugs at the same time. However if that’s happening I don’t know for sure if you’re getting 1000 A total or 500 A in each cable simultaneously. Perhaps I’d need to review the nameplate power ratings and the overall site limit in terms of the transformer to discern that. Obviously the best way to check that for sure is 4 fast charging cars plug in together and try to load up the two chargers and the site as a whole.
