A few priorities within polework on a young horse
Typical light training session with 4 year Haya - using the poles and exercises to train her mind , balance, rhythm and strength.
These all help towards her self carriage, which is always my aim .
The 3 Poles are set out at 9 feet apart, but this can be achieved at various distances .

Exercises to improve your ridden and dismounted jumping position
Exercises to work on your light seat and jumping position. Here using narrow rails to practice steering with the leg and then onto a simple dismounted exercises that can be adapted to suit any environment to help balance , posture and strength.
Exercises to help rhythm, turns and holding a line by using the square & the fan .
Working a couple pole exercises to help straightness and practice holding the line on a turn . It’s also a good way to check symmetry of your left and rein turns and improve your rhythm whilst doing so . This exercise teaches you to count the number of strides between the sets of poles whilst reading the distance, so great for improving your focus !
Equine Outlines - focus on improving your position whilst using the octagon .
As the octagon helps you to turn, it also helps improve the connection in general, so you can focus solely on your own position. In this video I use sitting trot and canter transitions , to practice using a softer seat and lighter leg , ideally with still hands . Use this exercise to help enable lighter aids in general, as the horse is guided by the poles ..
The Square - tram lines , phase 2 - Particularly helps with learning to turn more effectively .
5 year old Victor demonstrating a seemingly straightforward exercise, but can be used in a multitude of challenging ways. This one is particularly helpful for improving turning - by using more leg to hand and perfect for encouraging riders to look ahead and sit correctly (especially seatbones ) to enable fluency! There are Various levels of this tram line box exercise, this is just stage 1. Nex...
Equine Outlines - The Square - set up .
The easiest of all the exercises to set up , just 4 poles . This can be made anywhere and any size , not necessarily a school . The smaller the more challenging and must be slower , the bigger the more open and forwards . Setting up the square ! This exercise helps both riders and horses focus , by having a job to concentrate on ! Generally this trains riders both to turn with more leg but also...
Equine Outlines - a demonstration of how the square improves a horse to focus
If you are struggling with a spooky horse then this is a great way to help focus you both . A simple square at each end to help teach the horse to stay out around them or perhaps challenge it more by staying inside on a tighter turn . Without these the horse can fall in or become a negative conversation between you , by using a stronger aid. So easily done ! This 5 yr old can have a busy brain ...
Equine Outlines - The square - stage 3 - improving simple changes
Great way to help a horse understand simple changes , as the poles help back them off into a more collected canter . Then you can create bend around the poles to encourage a softer frame , plus helps the rider to be more aware of using the leg, which in turn helps with both collection and engagement. Simple yet very effective!
Using the octagon to help improve inside leg to outside hand coordination & connection .
The 8 pole formation assists by explaining to the horse to stay up around the riders inside leg on the turn , as they tend to move away from the poles . Conversely if a horse falls out use the poles on the outside. This encourages a softer inside hand and therefore better suppleness . Changing direction can then be added into this exercise and repeatedly so by also working around the cavalettis...
Equine Outlines - The octagon- a turning exercise for holding a line jumping .
This is a turning exercise to help with jumping and holding a line . The poles help to turn and focus on which aids to do so softly , then put this into practice over the cavalettis on a turn . Cavalettis are set at 3 strides apart (or 14 yds on a turn ) and 7 or 8 strides between depending on an inside or outside line . Igor is now approaching and landing in the same canter and balance , which...
Equine Outlines - Polework to help improve the paces
Easy floor plan to set up - just 2 sets of 3 poles on a curve - 5 feet between the middle of each . Naturally shorter on the insides and longer on outsides. Great way to help stride length, cadence and rhythm. Walk , trot or canter !
Training on the long lines - forwards but also then relaxed.
Young Hugo (rising 3) coming along nicely on the long lines . One thing I have learnt with my more recent homebreds is the importance of being able to find the ‘off ‘ or relax switch quickly . It’s so easy to just to keep sending them forwards , but that comes with a price . The relaxation is so important, more so than finding forwards( in my opinion) in the initial stages , or the work will al...
Trialling side reins - the difference with them on and off !
Trialling an old system and appreciating my new ! For the last 15 years I have just lunged in either one single rein or double lines .i stopped using side reins due to me believing I was less able to soften and allow , or ‘go with the horses’ when necessary. Particularly believed this with the young ones , as I hate them feeling ‘trapped ‘ in the contact as you cannot release anything that is n...
Brief introduction into why & how I lunge with one rein .
I generally use lunging for either starting the youngsters or for stretching and physio for the older ones . I tend to not be trying to improve much else than relaxation and stretching. Plus being more confident to seek the contact . The youngsters I teach how to ‘let go ‘ and soften through yielding , so this video is a quick guide to how I do so .

Thank you so much 🙏for this video. As a "returnee rider" who's not too keen on returning to group lessons , this is incredibly useful. Great tip to use " the octagon". Taking notes of exercises one can implement 👍

Sharon hi, thanks for sharing. These are great tasks for horses and you clearly make a real difference doing an excellent job. Will you just explain if tour long line goes straight through the ring to the bit and can I ask what type of long lines you use because they look lighter than mine.

For gods sake, why don't you learn to work a horse without restriction. I understand that it takes time to learn and I understand that you cant see what you're doing or how badly the horse is going, but do learn

    • @lynnes11
      @lynnes11 ปีที่แล้ว

Can you please elaborate? I understand that the horse is being worked in what is essentially draw reins, but the line is slack enough that the head is not being wrenched or fixed into place....it seems that there is room in the line for the horse to adjust the frame. Or is there not as much give as I'm assuming? Or is there a different issue that I'm not seeing? Thank you 🙂
