    TNX for the video. I did my first CW activation this past Thursday and I was nervous. I am just returning to Ham Radio after many years away from the hobby. I love CW for how quiet the bands are. I also did a SSB activation on Friday and found it exciting to talk to many people the bleed over is crazy. I bought the ICOM 7300 for my home and an Xiegu G90 as a field radio. My max power is 20 watts out. I really like your Yaesu radio. I started a TH-cam channel to document my progress. I will have my first CW activation video coming out soon; all the best, and this video was a great learning tool for me; you were very settled and worked the pile up like a pro! 73s DE W3CT. I think there was a SSB contest this past weekend which may be why you ran into so many others on the air. I find weekdays, especially during working hours (9-5) will be a lot slower so you are going to have an easier time finding a frequency. Hope to make a contact with you!

    Good job! The more you do, the easier they get. As for the RBN, you really don't need to do anything special. A single CQ usually gets me picked up. It can't HURT to send CQ multiple times, as well as your call, but it's definitely not necessary. I've often been picked up by the RBN when I throw my callsign out just after someone has finished THEIR CQ lol. It's really not that picky. I look forward to getting you in the log soon!

    Hey there! Greetings from the UK. Just hit the subscribe and took number 73. Great video and lovely park. Quick two questions: With that radio and battery setup and 100w and roughly 50% on TX and RX, how long are you able to run on that battery? Curious to know if it will last for 2 hours. That little mic, could you tell me the make and model please? On a side note really enjoyed the pace and rhythm you lead and occasionally breaking for P2P and QRP stations. Compliments to your chasers as well - very civil and patient waiting their turn. Thanks for sharing. 73 M7IBM

    • @ve7ajk
      @ve7ajk 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching! Radio is Yaesu FT-891. The battery is a Dakota Lithium 10ah battery. I remember one activation I was running 100w on SSB and I had a pileup almost the entire time and the battery lasted just over 2 hours. Looking back on it now I could have turned the power down to 50w once I had the contacts coming in so it could last longer. The microphone for the radio came with it but I think you might mean the lapel mic? I bought it on amazon and it is a brand called RICCHI. Came with 2 mics and a little dongle you plug into your phone. Very easy to use and good quality for the price.

    New to morse code here as well. I noticed some paddles produce crisp and clear dits and dahs others do not. Some sound like duhs 😂 and it’s hard to tell them apart. Have you experienced this? Is it the band condition or the quality of the paddle? Thank you for the video. 🤝

    • @ve7ajk

      That's a really good question and I don't know the answer. I have noticed that as well. I have a feeling it might depend on the radio. Maybe if there are some experienced CW ops they can comment and answer for us.

    I think you did alright. Got to say its a whole lot easier copying when you aren't the one in front of the radio I didn't plan on it but did my first ever CW only activation the same day as this. Was with family, my laptop failed in the field (so no FT8 fallback) and the SSB contest meant very full phone bands. Sending was where I failed miserably.

  • @nr3rful

    Interesting but why are you not sending the park number so they can log you .

    • @ve7ajk
      @ve7ajk 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think typically hunters get the park number from the POTA spotting page.

    • @dandypoint
      @dandypoint 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ve7ajkI agree. The park number is not necessary (POTA takes care of that when the activator log is sent in) but I do like to hear the state. I frequently hunt without the POTA page up and running I suspect others do also. I also think a slightly longer CQ does help. I seem to always tune across someone and hear or get part of the call. So I think sending the call twice helps on a CQ. I never like to call someone until I have their complete call. Sending the call after each QSO is also most helpful if not required in my opinion. Keep up the CW work. Getting on the air as much as possible definitely helps as well as simply copying on the air QSOs.

    Great show Bill! ⚡️👍 Have you tried elevating a radial or two yet? Even just a foot or so? I’ve used a driveway edge marker (fiberglass or plastic-type material) cut into two or three pieces and then just alligator-clip your counterpoise to it. The pieces can ‘band’ right to your whip antenna for travel. I bought my stick/marker from Home Depot or a home improvement-type store. A SteppIR antenna article I read said, “If you elevate radials even a few inches off the ground the capacitive losses go down dramatically. On 80m, 5 feet is all you need to get a drastic reduction in losses, thus allowing the use of fewer radials. Once the antenna is elevated it is much easier to get reasonable performance with even one .25 wl radial! With one radial the antenna is no longer omnidirectional, the side with no radial is down by 4 dB, that energy now appears at high elevation angles on the radial side and can be advantageous for close in contacts (0 to 400 miles). Once you elevate a vertical, two .25 wl radials work very well. It is important that you try to keep a 180° angle between the two (opposed, directly in line) for the best pattern. You will need two .25 wl radials for each band you intend to use. Spread the radials out as far as possible to reduce interaction, if they are less than a foot apart it can be difficult to get a good match on all bands.” ⚡️🤘

    • @ve7ajk
      @ve7ajk 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! Yeah I have experimented with this. I also do something similar when I do SOTA and use my hiking sticks to raise the radial. Will have to try it again!
