Dedicated to bringing serious military gaming in a fun to watch format.
Cold War Soviet Army: The Podcast
If you enjoyed our video about Cold War Soviet military doctrine (th-cam.com/video/Yey6jil-sUM/w-d-xo.html) then you may also like this podcast, made of the parts of our conversation that didn't make it into the video. Also, we went back into the studio to answer some of the more frequently questions we got in the comment section!
So in this follow-up podcast we go a bit more in-depth on topics such as defense (both as and against the Soviets), we're comparing Soviet tanks, and we think about what's the better idea: bringing more of the cheaper T62's, or fewer of the more expensive T64's?

Cold War Soviet Army: A Guided Tour
มุมมอง 65Kปีที่แล้ว
Learn how to recreate Cold War era battles in the game Combat Mission: Cold War with the Soviet Army. In this video, Domfluff will explain the core principles of Soviet military doctrine and show you how to utilize them in the game. From the formidable T-72 and T-64 tanks to the versatile BMP-1 and BMP-2 armored vehicles, the Cold War era Soviet Army had a range of powerful assets. Even if you'...
Visiting Scenario Battlefields pt 2: Counterattack at Son
มุมมอง 9K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Where did the Panzers of the 107th Panzer Brigade cross the Dommel river during their counterattack at Son? A decade old Combat Mission Question is answered in this historical analysis of the most popular Combat Mission scenario from the Market Garden module! On the morning of the 20th of september 1944, the 107th Panzer Brigade launched an attack on the paratroopers of the 101st Airborne who w...
Visiting Scenario Battlefields pt 1: Drive on the Dreijenseweg
มุมมอง 9K2 ปีที่แล้ว
On 19 september 1944 the 156th Parachute Battalion tried to break through the German defences at Oosterbeek to get to Arnhem. In this video I try to recreate the British actions on that day as best I can in this Combat Mission: Market Garden scenario, to see what the outcome will be! And while I'm at it, why not actually visit Oosterbeek to see what the battlefield really looked like? LINKS Ath...

Combat Mission Cold War: Last Stand At Rumpenheim
มุมมอง 38K2 ปีที่แล้ว
A US Army Cavalry troop mounts a defense against all odds to stop a Soviet Motorrifle Batallion from crossing the river Main, as the Cold War has gone hot in this somewhat overly dramatic after action video report. This video is part two in a series of two videos about the Combat Mission Cold War scenario "Rumpenheim Rumpus". In my previous video, I played the Soviet side against @MegalonJonesS...
Combat Mission Cold War: Rumpenheim Rumpus - Soviet Amphibious Assault
มุมมอง 20K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Watch me try to move an entire Soviet Motorrifle batallion across the river Main, in order to capture the town of Rumpenheim, defended by the US Army under command of @Megalon Jones Slattery . This scenario is part of the Combat Mission Cold War base game and is set in 1981; five days after the cold war went hot. Megalon Jones and I played this as a mirrored match, meaning that we also had a ga...
Combat Mission Cold War: Ivan's Expendable Bastards
มุมมอง 27K2 ปีที่แล้ว
The cold war gets bloody as I lead the Soviet army in a large scale assault on the American defenders, commanded by Megalon Jones. This battle is a rematch after our first one, which can be watched here: th-cam.com/video/zsWdP0eKGzA/w-d-xo.html. Fun fact: the enemy AT team that I was chasing at 5:20 was actually never there. Megalon Jones later explained that the ATGM missiles that I believed t...
Combat Mission Cold War: H2H against Megalon Jones: A Beautiful Morning
มุมมอง 27K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Megalon Jones and I went head to head in this user made scenario. It was at first planned that both Megalon and I would make a video about this scenario, both from our own point of view, but plans changed and eventually only this video was made from the Soviet army point of view. A rather dramatic reconstruction of 41sqn Case III training
มุมมอง 2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Training night operations with 41sqn of RAF Air UK, in DCS World. A video I did to practise capturing game footage. The many cursors on screen and such show that I needed a bit of practise with this. Squadron website: rafairuk-dcs.co.uk
As we have come to expect, an exemplary execution of gameplay, cinematic capture of footage, and witty commentary. Also Deep Purple reference.
The bug is with the T-64A, not the T-64B. The bug is that the T-64A has the same armor as the T-64B, when it should have the same armor as the T-72A. The T-64B and the T-72A both have exactly the amount of armor they're supposed to have. It's a pretty minor bug. Most US rounds, except for the later APFSDS rounds, should still be unable to get through the front turret or hull upper front plate of the T-64A. I think the main impact is that there is effectively no difference in-game between a T-64A and a T-64B. Maybe it will be addressed in the same patch that adds the BAOR module, or maybe it will never be addressed (I think after BAOR all focus will be on CM3). But either way, I don't think it's game breaking.
Soviet doctrine was fantastic, the problem was that the Army itself became too corrupt to make it work. In the 1960s, when most battalion commanders and regimental commanders were WWII veterans, I think it would have worked very well. Once those commanders retired, however, and corruption took hold? The entire system was in trouble.
dude we need more vids!!!
It would have been a good idea to show us what game looks like.
why oh why did it take me so long to find this channel? you are good, sir. well done.
9:55 - 10:30 WOW. 👏
we miss you come back
I‘m really love the cinematic character of the Videos and all the little storys of your forces
criminally underrated video, deserves millions of views.
I just finished this one as the Americans vs the AI. It is a fun scenario. I managed a major victory. My attack out of the town was on the east side of the central woods. I focused entirely on touching the phase lines which meant clearing any danger areas and then screening them off. I did not go over the hills but along the bases of the hills. It worked very well against the AI but against a human, I think the US needs at least another platoon of mech infantry. Very good scenario, IMO. And good video!
It is a very very important reminder in military manuals and doctrines of how to conduct themselves in battle and war is often not always one to one in reality, there are situations where certain military units had all the necessary tools and manpower needed to follow their training and plan as dictated in their doctrine but other times they barely even come close to following their instructions, this was true back in the days of the early roman republic and as it was true during the days of the soviet union.
Vice versa, there are many cases of small, independent Soviet units performing extremely well when cut off, and obviously cases of NATO units that fought more rigidly.
Part of the problem with this doctrine (IRL) and why its so good in video games is that spotting, ranging and connunicating are all automated outcomes in doctrine, and in gaminhmg, but this bears no relation to reality
Oh thats where you're wrong free whisky, I am here for the full 90 minutes. This is some great stuff man
You didn't take into consideration that nearly 60% will be broken in the first 10km, another 15% will not have ammo or fuel and the rest will only survive at best for 2 days
Superb video.
riveting, thanks!
I played this mission last week. And was mostly a success. Pushed most to the west of the map, through the forest, heavy with smoke screens.
brilliant work gentlemen, thank you
23:49 what about trenches built with the goal to reduce enfilading fire?
This comment section is so gay I feel like it is trying to suck me off too. Great job gang.
5000th.
*indeed* this was *a rumpening in da rumpus.*
Hope you are staying healthy and life is going well! would love to see some new content if you ever find the time. Great stuff.
This was the best Combat Mission channel! What happened? Really enjoyed your efforts and hope you’ll return.
Superb editing and camera work!
Ok wow this is great content
I think you have wonderful content on this channel ad it's heart breaking to see you have not uploaded in a year, I hope to see more videos from you
You should also do a combat mission Black Sea and teach us real modern Russian tactics
What works best for me is to set up L in defensive position then push it up in the right order all at the same time
Very late to the party, but excellent presentation and video, my hat off to you sir.
Sooo nice Video! Please do the same with the NATO-Force-Doctrine in Cold War-Times. And after this a second podcast wich tells something about the worldwide mílitary situation today.
I think if the Cav troop may have layed some mines on the opposite and their side of the river, it may have had an effect on the Soviets....Mines...the gift that keeps on giving.
Having served as a U.S. Marine during the Cold War (1974-78), I find your videos interesting and your information on Soviet tactics, spot on. I will say though you do have an advantage here playing the U.S. as your previous video you played the Soviets so you do have the ability of having a "crystal ball" as to what will work and what won't.
I'm pretty sure he said that these were started at the same time, so even if the other game got ahead by 2 or 3 turns, a few minutes isn't enough to have a meaningful impact.
Awesome video, thanks and good wishes. us army infantry
Dude I love your commentary. Haha engineers locking ur armor in. Much love
Great explanation of Russian Operational art and its prescriptive approach to war. I recently had to learn how to write a Soviet/Russian Op Order for a Btl Recon unit. These orders can be in depth and contain plans B/C already in them for exactly the reason you stated. There is so much myth based on propaganda , historical biases, and myth about Russian Deep Battle Operations and the way Russian Military Operates. We are seeing the results today, and I will leave it at that. Thanks for for showing people some reality as to why.
What a great video! The little digital map you used in the beginning to show your locations and plans is super cool!
Have to say. Excellent detail .Must have taken some time to produce this. Thanks very useful
I keep coming back to see if uv uploaded, pls come back
and that explains how shtora dazzlers work too i guess
This is a very cool scenario to watch, though I'm not certain a town this important would be defended by effectively a rump company of support assets. Though there's no west german army in CMCW that would have likely provided as many infantry as they could spare to keep hannovers flank clear
I pray and wish that you are okay.
WAKE UP WHISKY!
Production value through the rood here, well done Mr. Free Whisky
When new vid?
