I have both and my 5g Plus models do not perform well at all. My 5g Pro performs better than the uv5r and the 8hp models too. The Pro has a better screen and easier to see during the day. For me hands down its the 5g Pro over Plus. But, there are others out there that I might buy before the Pro, like the Tidradio H3. But, there's folks out there that hate Tid so this Bao 5g Pro is a good alternative.

I love the little DB-20G radio. I've used this thing for months. I have an MXTA26 in my truck, a Nagoya UT-72G Mag mount for the ATVs, and a TRAM 1477 when using it as a base. It works perfectly with all of them. The only downside to this radio is when transmitting frequently. It can get hot. To address this, I added an old computer CPU heat-sink to the exterior of the unit. This siphons off some of the heat and allows it to cool faster. IMO, this is a great radio for the price.

@@curtisachay8280 I am working disaster relief in South Carolina for Hurricane Helene for the next month or so, but when I get back we can definately meet up! There's a lot to discuss in person more than "in writing" on what you may need, so I would go easy on purchases until I get back. For now, on a budget, you can't go wrong with a Tidradio H3 and a Smiley 5/8 Slim Duck 465 for the short antenna and also the Nagoya 771g for the extended when you need that extra push and pull. I can guide you on a good base radio also and set up so you can talk way more than 9 miles in our terrain. For now, the Live Oak 550 repeater will be your best communication for approximately 40 miles or so. I can talk on it with a handheld in Mcqueeney and a Smiley 5/8 just fine, and it's roughly 29 miles from my house. Brian (WRKL886) is a genius when it comes to radios, HAM, GMRS, 10m and CB. He is always on 550 (repeater 15, channel 23 on your radio). Make sure your tones are set to 100 ctcss Tx and Rx. There's a ton of new folks jumping on the gmrs bandwagon in SA, so there's always help out there as well. Are you on the SA GMRS fb page? The 8 miles mark is a cow pasture and the 5 miles mark sometimes has a tall chain link fence in the background with a little shed in the middle of a field. The test was to show the quality from one to another though, bot how far you can talk. Everyone has a different range and obstacles to go through so I can't show this radio goes 10 miles or anything like that. @MH-5274 I haven't tested any Midlands. They are good, but they aren't American made either. The H3 is an awesome little guy, but.... if you decide to go with a Wouxun 9gx, I would get the 9Px which is an unlockable HAM radio. It's breaking "the rules", but in case of an emergency, you can talk to HAM repeaters with the same radio. The 9Gx is strictly locked to GMRS and the 9Px is 2/70/ maybe 1.25 and GMRS. I can't remember what all it transmits on, but you have additional comm frequencies if you find yourself away from GMRS towers.

This SR-112 is a SINGLE FREQUENCY SIMPLEX Repeater so I don't know why people are posting video's saying it's "Illegal",... One dude said it makes that one channel "Unusable" which is NOT true because only those who may be able to hit that Radio attached to the SR-112 would be able to (or subject to) go through the SR-112. The Surecom SR-328 is a Duplex Repeater which is another story because it works with 2 Radio's on 2 different Frequencies. @@Deathofear Yes, the orange Abbree 771c does very well. The Nagoya 771g is a fantastic antenna as well, but do this maybe: Now that you have a great extended range GMRS 771 antenna, you should order the Diamond SRJ77CA extended also. Keep this in your vehicle in case of "emergency" because it works excellent also on GMRS, but also works great on 2m / 70cm HAM. It's a ham antenna designed for those two freq's, but the 70cm is so close to GMRS, it still works well. If you get this as a backup, you can communicate very well on 2m in case of emergency, much better than the orange abbree will allow. Let's face it, your H3 will transmit on all 3 anyway, so you may as well have an awesome antenna for that too. I personally have never had to transmit on HAM, but I listen to them all the time. In my area (San Antonio), GMRS is much more popular than HAM. We have a ton of new guys joining daily, so it stays very very active on GMRS repeaters here. But, I am actually working disaster work in upstate SC at the moment, and no one uses GMRS here. There are repeaters on the mountains "over there" that I can hit with no problem, but this are is full of HAM guys, so this is where that Diamond SRJ77CA antenna would come into play if I needed anything. @TheRange7 Hey bud! Are you looking for just handheld radios or mobile also? This is what I would do for mobile to keep costs down: look at my latest video about the Radioddity DB20G. Get that radio with the Midland 32" 6db gain antenna. As for handhelds, that can get tough. They all put out 4-5w, but some "keep all that wattage on the intended frequency " and not allow power leaving the radio to drift to other channels. Yep, that happens. It's called spurious emissions. The better the radio, the less that happens. If you wanna stay cheap, get Tidradio H3 models, but they are tiny. If you have big hands, get the H8 models. Always run a Nagoya 771g antenna for long-range communication. Retevis makes awesome radios also. I have a HA1G but never messed with it. But I hear its awesome...Stear clear of Baofeng. They are towards the bottom on the totem pole! My daily carry is a Wouxun KG-UV9GX or KG-UV9PX with 2 different antennas: for a short antenna (in town) I just use the stock antenna, but out in the boonies I switch to the Nagoya 771g and it makes a huge difference. I have quite a few videos on different setups, but the 771g "always" wins and will take "any" radio to a totally different level. Look at the db20g mobile video but also watch a few different older field tests to get a good idea. I have links for all the gear in the descriptions on each video, which really does help me out. Let me know if I need to narrow down my next reply and what other questions you may have. It's funny u say Helene because we are out here in Upstate SC now helping out with insurance claims for everyone! Oh, go to mygmrs.com and search your area for repeaters. If you can hit a repeater, it really doesn't matter what radio you start off with because it will retransmit your signal 50 miles or so!

When I used Chirp to program, I always set the wattage to high, but.... after programming, unplug, and check settings, I saw the the radio would actually get switched to Low! That's huge... the Tidradio H3 is a much better option that Baofeng, and you get many more channels! manually look at your radio wattage settings and make sure they are on high first. If they are, you could have a bad radio, which happens with all these mass produced radios. It happens to me every now and then. But, if you can afford it, get the H3 and you will be happier in the end.

Using a "standard" VHF/UHF antenna, I could not hit it all with either the 8" or 17" version. I then tested the 6" Nagoya 701G and 15" 771G. Yes, a specifically tuned antenna to 465 will be a game changer. The only difference I have seen is comparing a short to a long (701g vs 771g) is the 771g is longer and will receive more signal coming back from the repeater. The shorter the antenna, the less it can "grab" signal from the air.

@davidyummus6259 Everything you just said is correct. However, let's say you both are on channel 5, no tones. Everyone and their brother within range will hear your conversation, right? Well, now you stay on 5, but both of you go to CTCSS 103.5 (for example). Everyone and their brother will still hear your conversation, but you won't hear theirs because your radio is only allowing communication on 103.5, allowed to enter your radio. If "Everyone and their brother" has a radio that's wide open, no tones, they will hear all communication. If you set your radio to TX and Rx only a certain tone, you will only hear that communication. It's odd sounding, but get three radios together and try it. I tried the whip that came with the TD-H3, and then a Nagoya NA-717 8.5-Inch Super Whip, and , since I had my BC125AT with me, I also put on a BNC-W100RX antenna from the scanner to the TD-H3.
