Anyone that desired to get the most a twin fin had to offer needed only to pay attention to how L.B. drove his boards. Never stop turning, look to where you want to go, and give all ya got. Do that and a good twin where take you anywhere you want to go. He knew how to make it happen and showed everyone they could do it too. I rode singles, twins, and thrusters for over 30 years but the most fun I ever had was on a twin pushing everything to the limit. Pushed so far that a close friend said he never knew I could surf like that until I rode a twin. Had it not been for Larry's example I would not have known how.

Respect to a pioneer of the sport. I was born in the 90’s but man I cherish surf history. You are so important unks. Also RIP Ben Aipa I truly don’t know what surfing would’ve looked like now days without you titans paving the way.

Yeah Bertleman you are the man!!! We all wanted to surf like Larry Bertleman. Although we might never have reached such lofty hights in the surf , I for one made up for my lack of surfing prowess in other areas of beach culture...especially pretty girls (I loved living on the beach)

Great clip. The defining pivot point into what is now modern surfing - right here. Bertlemann WAS that turning point. Duke - Ben - Bertlemann - connected line. And Bruddah Ben: I remember some surf movie night, back in Town about 1973. I'd been there maybe two weeks. Total kook. In the film: two clips, split screen side-by-side, Ben Aipa surfing Ala Moana. Two different waves, but almost like it was cloned, just microseconds out of sync, the turn initiations. Ben hit the same points on the wave, flowing perfectly working with it - had it totally wired. It blew my little haole mind. The Hawaiians still the best to me, working with the waves in a whole different way. (Just read the Bertlemann info page. The part about Rabbit. Triggered a memory. About two weeks after seeing the movie with Ben Aipa, I was at Canoes. Maybe my third time surfing ever. I didn't know anything about sets, where it broke. In comes a set, I'm still paddling out, trying not to fall off the board. A canoe outside catches a set wave and comes moving in. I was so freaking happy, my dream coming true! Wanted to surf since '63. Man, I thought, those waves move fast! Canoe coming bigger, straight line at me. Rabbit is in the back steering. Calmly says "I ain't moving for YOU brudduh". I was young, fast enough to roll off the board, flat, rolled over and waved my arms, like backwards wings, pushing me down, facing up with my flat body parallel to the canoe. I could see little bubbles hissing off the big round hull, the paddles dipping on both sides. It was wood in my memory. At the end, I came up, and Rabbit was looking back. Totally calm, maybe a little surprised, like the kook made it up. One of the best memories of my life. I know you shouldn't like that, but I wish there was a time machine.)

Really enjoyed this video Larry, it brought back so many memories of my teen years. I surfed Ala Moana Bowls so much. Countless beautiful days I'd charge the sweet lefts, and you, Ben, and Michael Ho would just be taking the place apart. I was two years younger than Michael, and also from Kailua. My Dad worked in Honolulu near the Aloha Tower, and me, and a friend would strap our boards on his car for the ride to Town around 7am most mornings. We'd bolt out of the parking garage there, and through all the Magic Island tourists and make our way to the yacht harbor. Always jumping off the rocks of the jetty paddlng directly out. We'd be there all day surfing, and would eat the killer lunch off a food truck there all the time. Teryaki chicken and rice, and paddle back out and surf until my Dad was ready to go back home. As a hao'le, I always got plenty of waves, and was never ever hassled. Even on bigger days. It was my favorite place in Town to surf. Anyways, much respect and aloha to you Larry, these were some of the best years of my life.

Larry... do you still surf? Have you ever tried quads and thrusters, twins.. probably yes, Ive been searching footage or interviews about it but never found. I wonder what you have to say about it.. I mean, for me surf scene is boring nowadays, but I do appreciate a good thruster, knifey not too short, old boards, single fin, twins, I like the akila aipa approach to new twins... but I feel like the old boards had more function and freedom, plus they would ride any surf and required more connection to the ocean and waves, flow. I feel like today is too much sticker, posing, the boards also look and feel dead... nothing how used to be, feels like the boards are no longer made for a reason or purpose, they made for make you rip or something despite the wave, maybe just maneuvers. Like the shapers are not longer visionaries. People, specially the groms not even get regulated, it is important to be regulated haha we see kids surfing like adults... acting like adults... is like when u mention drawing your own circle on a paper, not copying. One thing I appreciated was you adjusting your single fin the way you wanted on that movie. Im not complaining...but feels like you guys back then were way ahead of us. Is almost like i wish we could go back to that and change surf again. Few people really appretiate those boards and can use them today, most is just for looks amd styling... well.. hope to hear from you, I like your perspective.. I wonder because maybe you dont surf anymore, or still rides single fins..or maybe just plays music. Bro I used my wife's uncle old ben aipa stinger at diamond head and big pupukea... ho that thing is something, gnarly... solid also, hard to ride. Feela like to find the right tuning too, gotta tune the fine positioning and all that. Very humbling.
