HUGE aquarium misconception! even veteran aquarists get this WRONG
มุมมอง 2.7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
there is a huge misconception in the hobby that is seldom discussed. Everybody wants to know how much filtration is enough. It is such a heavily discussed topic. But I think there is a overlooked area in filtration that I want to discuss. And yes. this is clickbait. sorry.

I wanted to know If you could maintain a no waterchange tank with only duckweed. The duckweed will have no help from anything. It will be the only thing that can eliminate nitrates from the tank. Will this tank work? here are the results of a 1 year experiment. Wonderful experiment. Thank you... I am aiming for this but with my 2 2 month old axolotls...my question is..what else can I feed my duckweed to survive and be healthy? I have no substrate, no other plants and only 1 snail at the moment..

    Also: O2 has low solubility in water, because it is a nonpolar molecule in a polar solvent.

  • @bustatron

    I've run my tank like this for 4 or 5 years. Just occasionally remove excess duckweed. One thing you will run into is snails will be unable to build shells properly once they have consumed all the calcium & stuff from the water. So might have to suppliment that if you care about snails.

    Love the experimental approach you are taking in the hobby. It is surprising to see we share the same methods to avoid/minimise water changes in marine too (i.e carbon dosing, deep sand beds)

    I think the gravel performed better likely because the water could move easier through the media. The effect can be super charged by adding a little flow to the water and even more by adding a plenum under the substrate. Doing so might show that gravel doesn't do as good only because of too much oxygen flowing through it.

    Some plants would have worked wonders for nitrates and nitrogen compounds - I'm surprised you don't have ammonia, nitrite and nitrate issues without plants as part of the natural filtration process

  • @sromes1
    @sromes1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'd like to run a test 10 gal tank I just made with just substrate to a 10 gal with a layer of soil and and capped with 2" of sand have No plants and just a airstone and I just tested the cloudy water I got and the ammonia level is about .50 ppm, nitrates about 20 ppm. If I have the bacteria to convert ammonia to nitrites , nitrites to nitrates and I have some anaerobic present in the soil to convert nitrate to nitrogen gas then at some point shouldn't there be no nitrates , nitrites or ammonia in the water. if that happens then I'll add some fish food to the tank to get converted and go to zero again also expect any hydrogen sulfide h2s to be converted to sulfate so4 by the o2 added or am I missing something...thx

    • @sromes1
      @sromes1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      so is it true at some point there will be no nitrates , nitrites or ammonia in the water. if I add no input other then adding enough ammonia hydroxide to get the .50 ppm ammonia?

    Does your tap water have chloroamines? If so, is it because the water coming in is so slow that the system manages to break it down?

  • @JRways
    @JRways 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Nice video, very informative to confirm that duckweed works for no water changes. I have duckweed in my 400L tank and it is really good at balancing nitrates. Most of the time it just grows steadily and slowly fills up the surface of the tank. When something happens it quickly responds to this. One example is when 4 mussels died at once, I was alerted because the complete surface of the tank got filled up with duckweed within a few days. apparently a big nitrate spike happens when these die. Second example is when the bioload is higher the duckweed fills up the surface much faster. I had about 25 guppy fry growing up, together with about 300 shrimp, every month the duckweed would grow back faster. I gave away most of the guppies and about 100 shrimp, then it started growing back more slowly.

    Hi Jay, 1 week ago set up a dirted 5 gal tank with 1 inch of soil & 2 1/2 inches of sand. I have about 50% plants, ...stem & column feeders. I am running a hob filter with a media cartridge. A small light under the hood of the tank. My question is should I use the hob filtration while I wait for the tank to cycle or is it better to cycle without any filtration? I have watched all your basic videos on filtration ...but am still stumped here. Thanks for any help you can give. Or does it make any difference either with or without filtration?
