The Beauty of Iterative Game Design
Lets explore what makes the Dark Souls and Elden Ring games great. We are talking about the art of iteration, building towards a perfect video game.
Having love the soulsborne games for as long as I have I wanted to dive into a key aspect of their design and show how effective it is, but how difficult it is to pull off. Many studios have tried and many have failed but FromSoft has nailed it time after time. Lets learn more about it.

How The Greater Will Fell To Chaos - Elden Ring Lore Theory
มุมมอง 76K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Following the release of Shadow Of The Erdtree, I've had a hard time finding motivation for theories, mostly because of what I feel is a lack of answers to big questions I had. However, this theory is one that I wanted to discuss because of the intangible nature of the Greater Will and the confusion around its existence. While looking into it, I found so many interesting details linking the Fre...

As we near the release of the DLC I wanted to throw a few of my theories out there to see how they hold up once we get our hands on Shadow Of The Erdtree! In these videos I do my best to stay within the game for my reasoning using item descriptions and world story telling to come to my conclusions! Thank you for joining me and I hope you enjoy! ...
I feel at though they may act like tuning forks
Meter has a scar on her chest, from the initial use of the fingerslayer blade perhaps. It is noted to have blood on it.
How marika was involved in the assassination of his most beloved son, the only one that has THE GOLDEN as title… she shattered the elden ring because she was driven to the brink by his death
The title golden just represent he’s a part of the golden lineage and golden vow nothing really that special
Beautiful. The connection between lusat, azur and Metyr seems so convincing, it's hard to treat it otherwise!
Marika has gotta be one of the most complex fictional characters ever made
Melina is firewood, torrent is the goodest boy. Not mysterious.
Very cool stuff and well-put synthesis. I may not agree on everything, but I dig how succinctly you tied the ideas presented in game with inspirational science, art, and real life.
Love this. Though you Overlooked the lineage of Overwatch when calling it original. Doom -> Quake -> Team Fortress -> Half-Life -> Team Fortress Classic -> Half-Life 2 -> Team Fortress 2 -> Overwatch -> Overwatch 2. So yeah there is iteration all over. Even with all of OW2's missteps I actually think it's in the best spot it's ever been right now. Civilization is also one of the best examples of iterative design. As is Baldur's Gate 3 which includes the iteration of the IRL game resulting in the 5e ruleset. Another fantastic example is Digital Devil Story -> Megami Tensei -> Shin Megami Tensei -> SMT If... -> Revelations Persona -> Persona 2-5 -> Metaphor ReFantazio. Tears of the Kingdom, Doom Eternal, Metal Gear -> Death Stranding, Monster Hunter Wilds... like all the good games that aren't experimental indies are the results of deep lineages. Some are expensive to make sure, but others... surprising didn't break the bank... and yet still made buckets.
Nah, this theory is off. Ranni was coreupted by the snowy witch, she became the new now witch and servant of the dark moon. This is an opponent to the greater will. She had to kill her two fingers as final sacrafise and statement to the moon that theres no going back and also severing the greater wills hold over her or connection. Ranni then killed her brother with the half mark, along with herself. This left godwyn yo spawn those who live in death. Its a concequence. Marika became disillusioned seeing that her favorite, uncorrupted, uncursed son, was killed by another one of her children. She had enough and in a moment of rage, she broke the elden ring. The elden beast crucified her ass, but wasnt allowed to kill her because she still is the current vassel as no nee god has been chosen. Greater will finally revives us and we put an end to the nonsense.
dude the greater will is not the one revive us it was marika who revive us too the greater will has long since abandoned the land between it’s no longer there
We love when fromsoft comes out with new iterations
How a fromsoft crossover fighting game should Go Gwyn is making a speech. Gwyns's messengers send him a letter form Queen Yharnam. Gwyn is shocked as it is a declaration of war. Anor Londo immediately explodes and assaulted by an army of armored cores led by a mod controlled RLF. The RLF battles Gwyn and his kin. Players can use any of Gwyn's kin RLF is defeated but Gwynvere anticipates another conflict arising. Switch to moongrum who is riding a paper airplane through the eastern lands of dark souls, before being attacked by a mod controlled Ludwig. Moongrum battles Ludwig Ludwig who Increases his size and power levels exponentially. Ludwig is killed and a mod controlled Loretta informs moongrum that the haligtree has launched an attack on the newly created crumbling ruins of yharnam, which can be observed. Moongrum heads there. Creighton awakes with anayama the peddler and the maiden in black in the smithing depths of Nokron, a newly created area.. Creighton is taken over by mods attacks the maiden in black. Maiden in black Vs Creighton. Creighton spawns a tree sentinel which charges after anayama Anayama Vs tree sentinel. Anayama wins and questions how he got here Meanswhile Gwyn gets infected by the frenzied flame which corrupts the first flame as well. Gwyn turns on his firstborn Nameless king Vs frenzied Gwyn. In the second phase Gwyn summons Radahn and fuses with him . Flann is joined by a mod controlled Leda, who attacks the also mod controlled Gwyn/Radahn on basis of being the traitor that turned the haligtree against. Can switch between Flann or leda. Moongrum heads to the crumbling ruins of yharnam only to discover A mod induced Shura having killed malenia and the haligtree forces on the area. Shura is induced with sleep using mods and charges at moongrum who is assisted by Solaire who claims that time is now more convoluted than ever. Rokumonsen joins the fray and attacks both Solaire, moongrum and Sekiro. 3 way battle between (Solaire and moongrum), sleep Sekiro and Rokumonsen. Rokumonsen dies and Sekiro teleports away. Moongrum is told by Solaire to seek the old elden dark souls arts ring blood, before being killed instantly by the dung eater. Meanwhile Divine Heir Takeru and tomoe come face to face with a nod controlled rykard and his inquistors in ashina castle. Branding Takeru traitor to the golden order, ghiza attacks tomoe. Tomoe Vs ghiza and the volcano manor forces. Tomoe dies and Takeru is sent by isshin out of the region. Yuria of londor encounters Yuria the witch and both are told by the now mod controlled and deranged Rennala to kill each other. Rennala's body is taken over by deathroot, mutating it into a grotesque version of ranni. 621 decides to assist both Yurias under handler Walters suggestions. 621, and 2 Yurias Vs deathroot Rennala Rennala is killed and Walter questions what just happened before being kicked by patches. Patches laughs it off and dissapears. Melina is suddenly gets scarlet rot after eating an octopus, killing her. This shocks aseo who is immediately attacked by a mod controlled Gehrman, artorias and gravelord nito They are dissapeared but aseo receives warnings from a mysterious voice that that more is coming. A younger Radahn is discussing the complexities of gravity magic with Gaius who is killed by vicar Amelia and the storm king , shocking Radahn and messmer. The storm king is assisted by a mod controlled Vendrick, who demands the head of Odeon. More absurd stuff happens until the lore is heavily disfigured. At some point Melina, ranni, shanalotte, maiden in black, Emma, the doll, Anastasia of astora meet Vagram, ostrava, Oscar, Sekiro, vyke, 621, faraam phantom, Henriett, aseo also meet at some point. The final boss is moon consort King Gideon, promised lord of frenzied cinders, who using mods has attached parts of multiple bosses onto himself and is fought collectively at the hunters crucible of Enir Lothric. Vagram, ostrava, Oscar, Sekiro, vyke, faraam phantom, Henriett, aseo, 621 battle Gideon who reaches his second phase where he used mods to transform into a massive armored core like creature, only to be kicked to death by patches who reveals that Gideon used mods to fuse the elden ring, some old blood, some Kojima particles, some souls arts, the dark soul with each other to unlock that form This confuses everyone so and Michel zaki from AC6 shows up with an army of weak clones of various bosses to battle patvhes in a 16 phase boss fight spanning 10 different mod created poison swamps filled with giant trees, angry at the lore changes made by patches and the now dead Gideon. Patches defeated Michael, laughs it off and undoes everything that happened.
You wouldn't see darkness when approaching a black hole from a distance. If theres matter. Would be glowing so bright the light would vaporize you. It'd be bright. I imagine the lightless void the area it reaides, but the greater will itself, its a radiant golden source of light As for the expanding abyss your talking about, its more along thenlines of vacuum decay rather than heat death. I also disagree with the last 10min or so. Astel was sent down by the greater will as punishment. The lore syas the Nox were banished. The word banished carries a certian weight to it. Not just destroyed or attacked. It suggests they transgressed and a higher authority took action. I think the greater will, at most, left to start another world. We see in the elden beast arena the forest of golden trees. Also suggesting there are many other worlds and erdtrees out there that the greater will has cultivated. The land between didnt work out. Idiots constantly fighting or mating with themselves or family. Probably threw its arms up and said fuck this. Untilz at least, we come along. The greater will raised us. The last tarnished to wake. The first in a long time, if we go by what others say. Maybe our tarnished is the greater wills avatar. If you need something done right, do it yourself.
Melina is Gloam Eyed Queen. After defeat from Maliketh, she was resurrected in spirit form to guide someone who will help her burn the Erdtree and Free the Rune of Death. After her sacrifice, she sends us to Farum Azula, trusting us to defeat Maliketh and free the Death. We succeed, therefore Melina finally gets her "Destined Death". Melina is also daughter of Marika because R R Martin is an old fuk and he messed up the timeline.
This theory is dope as fuck
A really good game mechanic that adds credibility to this theory is right in our faces, if you think about it. Holy magic was supposed to become the thing that brings true death just as it is the only thing to give life; and the holy light spells and healing spells are the only thing that can be assured to force those who live in death to die a true death. The dead do not rise again after the light of Gods has burned them. How would that be the case if Marika was only responsible for keeping everything alive? She was trying to put death back into the golden order under her control, this time, perhaps.
Melina lives cuz u just became Lord of FF and just started the job to "create the Great one" to bring everything in to one great again. So u start the real job after the game...and melina will hunt u till u burn away her too or she get rid of u. I think...
WOAH! Few go THIS deep into things, New Sub!
so many loretubers popped up after dlc release, could someone tell me how to recognize if one is legit or full of bs?
This theory also goes along with the golden orders theme of “All that converge, much regress.”
Shes cool and everything. But honestly Before elden ring came out, i thought melina was gonna be our new "level up lady" AND she IS, BUTT, she shows up in places few and far between. There were times in my first playthrough that i was surprised melina was still around. I had forgotted about her purpose 😢
Yes someone who thinks like me. Good video.
In the crucible time period the giant crusher hammer states an iten description summarising that humans were stronger back then. Maybe one of the reasons why marika doesnt want people to find the truth.
Hooray.
Awesome.
Dope.
Subscribe you people.
This channel deserves much more attention.
1:24 WHERE DID YAH COME FROM COTTON-EYED JOE
1:16 Cotton eye Joe
How can Hyetta be Irina if Irina’s body remains in the same place for the rest of the game after her death.
There were two trees. The tree of life and the tree of knowledge. But the tree of knowledge represents death. So one could say that you have a tree of life and a tree of death. The cycle of life and death in the lands between is completely disrupted. So the tree of death was literally moved to some sort of parallel dimension, still connected to the lands between but separate. The space that exists in the main map of the lands between in the middle where there is nothing but ocean is where the so-called shadow lands used to reside. The Divine towers were used as a mechanism to remove the tree of knowledge from the physical world of the lands between and put it in a parallel world, thus disrupting and perverting the cycle of life and death in the lands between. This caused the great upheaval, and it is why the lands between looks like it does now. This game is filled with a bunch of esoteric occultism. It draws from things like Zoroastrianism, Kabbalah, and gnosticism. It also has elements of the abrahamic religions in it as well. This concept of the two trees is born out of many of these different occultic and abrahamic religions.
I dont like it because the Elden Beast factually came down to the world after Metyr. Of course, it's a matter of debate as to when exactly the Elden Beast came crashing down, but if we were to say that it happened after Metyr's abandonment... well this whole theory is debunked. In that case, the Greater Will did not die/leave, it just ditched Metyr and replaced her with the Elden Beast
15:33 Yes. iirc in JP text, the word "lightless abyss" that describes the Greater will is the same word as what Azur saw. So yeah what Azur saw is surely GW's abyss. Interesting, it is also the same word in "Eternal Darkness" that symbol of the downfall of eternal city, which we know they invoked GW's ire and got grounded. Also it is a different word from 'darkness' in Dark Moon, messer's abyss serpent, etc.
Melina is a Deathbird Priestess at a minimum, given the deathbird talon on her eye. She would have been a custodian of spirits, helping them on their journey. Examples of her role can be found statues in the four Chapels (Aspiration, Stormveil, Lleyndell and Sol) and Meliketh's arena in Farum Azula, where she's surrounded by 3 dogs (a gift from Torrent's former master). More likely than being anything Miquella had control over, it's far more likely that a spirit tender like herself would have access to a spirit animal like Torrent. When Renna gives you the Spirit Bell and Wolf Spirit Ashes, she even says she was asked to give it to you by Torrent's former master, and Melina is the one riding Torrent in the previous cutscene. That we discover Melina is the Queen of Farum Azula, or a very damn important person there, after her sacrifice and after the final boss puts the nail in it for me.
And I'll go on to add that it was Meliketh that killed the Gloam-Eyed Queen and took Destined Death from her and sealed it away. He's still there, in the Gloam Eyed Queen's mortuary temple. The Twinbird is on the walls as you enter from the Forge and it is also on the doors of Meliketh's arena. Placidusax, Twinbird, ancient dragons, beastmen that look like dogs with hands (including Meliketh), dogs and finally the Gloam-eyed Queen, who sacrifices herself to Burn the Order she couldn't destroy in life, though she herself will not become a god.
This was ABSOLUTELY incredible I have about 4k hrs in and am writing my own timeline and you literally took the words out of my brain! Good show!!🎉
One small thing ive wondered for a while, not a concrete theory by any means but im throwing my two cents out there. Given the themes of repeating cycles and simulacra, i couldn't help but spot this parallel: Greater Will (Marika) fractures (shatters) the One Great (Elden Ring) And if the GW imprisoned Marika via the Elden Beast, then possibly the reason the GW "abandoned" the Lands Between is that it was in fact imprisoned, by its own greater will equivalent of some higher plane.
Your entire theory feels very similar to our current view about the universe - that it was once an infnitely small and infinitely dense point of energy called 'singularity', which expanded, creating universe filled with matter and energy, giving birth to stars, planets and eventually life. One of the theories in physics suggest that if universe expanded from singularity, it will eventually shrink back to the same point (Big Crunch theory I believe). Your explanation sounds like Greater Will was that singularity - a infinitely dense point of energy suspended in the abyss - where no matter, energy, time or anything existed, and when it expanded and created universe it realized (assuming it has some sort of sentience) that it was a mistake and it wants to shrink back to the singularity point. I can't devise any theory of my own about why the Greater Will chose a vessel and brought the age of order, but I think that Flame of Frenzy goals are Greater Will true goal - to burn and melt everything - matter (flesh and land) and energy (soul, since the Flame of Frenzy can melt even the eternal concept that is a soul) into what Greater Will was in the first place. And maybe choosing the vessel and bringing order to the worlds was one of the steps to bring everything into one - first to conquer lands, tribes and nations into one nation under one ruler, have one faith etc. And eventually it could order the vessel to claim the flesh and souls of the living to become one, singular being, that was suppossed to be melted away by the Flame of Frenzy along with the world, effectively bringing Greater Will closer to its inital form. And the Abyss that Lusat and Azur saw could be the future where Greater Will succeded in melting away the worlds one by one, eventually leaving cold, dark, empty abyss.
I think Marika was raising Miquella to take her place so she could die and escape the cage she herself created. In the DLC ending, it seemed to me that someone had TOLD him he was going to be a god (his mom) and Godfrey would be his consort. The original vow. But I think as he aged Miquella no longer was dancing to his mom’s tune. So, instead of allowing her to set the groundwork for his Godhood, he betrayed her by tipping them both off. Marika ruined Ranni’s plan and Ranni Ruined Marika’s plan. I think she shattered the Ring because she realized Miquella had not only rebelled but was also laying a new groundwork for his own ascension. She had no choice but to use her Trump card and shatter the ring preventing Radagon from taking over, and summoned her immortal army into the lands between to wipe the slate clean.
A black hole is a region of spacetime where gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light and other electromagnetic waves, is capable of possessing enough energy to escape it. I belive the "Greater will" is not dead, it is taking back what it gave. Wile the chaos flame burns it away like a supernova would expand and burn stars and planets away like butter. I do think both are one and the same but not THE SAME. One wants to create and birth the other wants to burn and wipe everything out. You can not create a painting with out having a clean canvas. Some belive a blackholl is not the end it at some point becomes crittical and collapses in on it self and creates what some call "The Big Bang" Now i do not have a degree in space laws of physics nor would i claim to have it but im a nerd and i love this idea of both "The Greater will and Chaos flame" beeing the same thing or at least both are painting on the same canvas. (Sorry for my broken english i do not speek it well i hope you understand me.)
Before I watch. I wanna say, duh? The Greater Will is name as such due to its desire to exist. Choas adheres to nature and wishes to follow the natural law of regression. When frenzy found a foothold in the lands between, The Greater Will abandoned the world out of self preservation.
I think Marika’s original sin, was bringing Chaos into the world. Her Lust for power and control created a chain of events that lead to so much suffering that it created the foothold needed. Her order created Chaos and brought the Greater Wills mortal enemy. The inevitable truth, of its own eventual end.
Ironic isn’t it? How Melina wants order through balance of life and death. But she herself doesn’t want this same order and cycle for the universe itself.
Chaos is the only true natural ending. Neither good, nor bad. Simply a cycle of the universe that spans beyond the thousand of year timeline graspable to mortals. The dragons are closest to understanding this but they too allied themselves with the Greater Will to stall the inevitable. The lands between is a microcosm of the macrocosm of the universe itself. Life vs Death, Order vs Chaos. One and the same and an order not even The Greater Will is able to prevent. The one great will recombine and burst forward again, birthing a new Universe.
Ringed Finger
I love ER lore videos, but this one seemed to me just a restatement of the game I already played, rather than focusing on lore. I couldn’t make it past 10mins. That’s just me though.
Idk if Why the greater will disappeared is the question Especially when we don't know of the greater will was ever there ???
The microcosms look just like Runes.
A note on the power of Death: it might actually be an energy, similar to the energy that gives beings life. If the Erdtree is, or was, related to the Crucible, and the Crucible provided Life to the Land, then the Erdtree's counterpart - the Scadutree - is what provides Death. This assumption can be based on more than just being the counterpart of the Erdtree, as the Scadutree is comprised of two colors mixed together - black and gold - which we find mixed together in all things relating to Death, or more specifically Deathblight.
Perhaps torrent knows we will eventually confront miquella again or "save him" from becoming a god. There's a possibility he wants to tag along with us to reunite with his former master. Maybe he knew his former master was going down the path of darkness and he saw kindness in us similar to what miquella used to have. Its s plot hole
Did you just cotton eye Joed? 1:18
I think the crucible is the dead bodies piled up together. The aspects are probably the result of using certain creatures with those traits. The tree seems to be a catalyst or a way to gather and collect the energy from the bodies. The euporia can't get energy from reanimated bodies because the energy is gone. Burning the tree the first time cleared the crucible, erd tree burial was controlled and limited. It seems to fit with the underground cities and farum azula as well. The bodies were used to focus life energy into whatever they were working on. Crucibles by other names. The rune of death being removed meant no new crucibles could be made. It makes me think creatures are created instead of being born.
I've been saying for years the Erdtree is a fake, that the actual tree is just a stub you can see at the throne room and underground, with regular wooden roots in the catacombs, but every golden part is just an incantation, and no one believes me. In several parts we can clearly see the tree is transparent but people tell me it's not. I thought I was going mad!!!
Is the shadow tree the real form of the erdtree without the golden transparent bs that Marika put on top of that?
The gold/yellow of the Frenzied flame could be whats left of the Greater will and the Frenzied flame is keeping that golden/yellow colour as a trophy or as a way to mock the greater will's followers
