Al Swearengen’s dialogues/monologues are profane Shakespeare, simply brilliant. This was one of the best shows ever made, and Ian McShane was absolute riveting everytime he was on screen.

Al the spokesman of telling it like it is. good . bad. or indifferent. Al was a memorable fellow and a lesson on sticking to ones convictions .

"Whoa whoa whoa. You got a F'ing stagecoach to catch!" 😅😅 I laugh as much today hearing that today, as I did 20 years ago.

I've watched this series more times than I care to admit ! Al's conversations with a box that contains the head of a indian called Chief are purE GOLD and priceless ! It was the best thing ever on tv and if it was on now STILL would be !

Masterful writing and acting making the audience feel a degree of empathy for a cold-blooded killer.

Hes so good you really cannot distinguish if its his show or olyphants. Mcshane is just a force in this role. Im young and always saw his modern work so i felt him a bit of a redundant character actor but this show completely reversed my bias

It's a crime this show never got finished. The world is a cruel place sometimes. I mean I don't care about Ukraine, Israel, Palestine or any of this other shit. But this, tragedy man.

"A ditch for cum" maybe one of the most brutal put downs I've heard.

McShanes's immersion into 'Al' is as complete as any in cinematic history. He is my personal favorite. This scene was lightning in a bottle. Pure genius, He delivers a soul-wrenching tale while being...'serviced'...and you care nothing about the sex. It's the tale and his telling.

Most men secretly wish they could talk to women like this.

I watched this episode with my parents and it felt kind of awkward, but we were all just glued to the direction and the dialogue and it kind of overrode the absolute smut happening along the way. The credits started rolling and we were all silent not really knowing what to say and then my dad just said "Ian... FUCKING McShane, guys." That broke the ice and we had a great philosophical discussion breaking down all the different parts that make up the identity of this show and what they mean in the aggregate.

He should've got an Oscar for this performance😂

The most poetic part of this monologue is that in tandem with Al apologizing to himself for what he had to do to the reverend, he was actually speaking a sermon.

These blow job soliloquies are sublime

Great acting and great writing. Showing a very important and powerful person in the community blowing off some steam with alcohol and sex. While intoxicated, venting about problems that he can’t discuss with others. And showing the relationship of employer and employee. Although not necessarily a dynamo scene, it just further displays the complexity of Al.

Any glimpse into Al's past is glorious to me. You hate him, then you love to hate him, then you hate to love him, then you love him, then you love to hate who he hates. Such a fantastic arc.

Ian McShane was masterful as Al Swearengen for sure, I loved this series.

Telling her to spit is a MASSIVE discontinuity.

I hated him at first. I thought he was a cocky boisterous prick.. then there was wierd seen with his sister about a special way to clean the stairs. And when blonde calls him out..... ses the only one who knew his actual real weakness. . He was as open as a baby bird but man was thay mf tough as fucking nails. He went though hell ad still helped the sheriff with the town. Mf was an absolute savage. Last performance I've seen thay well was honestly... never... I've never seen someone portal whatever the fuck he was trying to portray that well.. stone cold prick. With a heart of gold. His jewel.. lol

Gotta love how the two types of people watching this scene are “Wow how tragic for Al. His need to justify his brutality and talking himself into killing the reverend is so revealing of his deeper side as a damaged man who was abandoned by his mother. His outlook on the harshness of reality well and truly earned and yet he still has his humanity deep down. Such a profound moment of both toughness and vulnerability that aligns perfectly with the oral sex to exemplify the crudeness of the world they both occupy. So much depth that could be made into a book unto itself. Truly a great scene”. Then the other side being “Lol he got a hummer and said fuck a lot. Huhuhuhuhuh” Sometimes I think there really are two separate species of humans.
