USA can officially restrict use of Spanish, Europe can ban Islam with same excuse. If such ideas are considered too far, so actions of Latvia and Estonia should be too.

USA hasn't restricted the us of Spanish. Spanish is embraced throughout the states. Bilingual or trilingual is highly encouraged in America. The Baltic state countries have been doing a lot legally to restrict the use of Russian language within their borders.

Latvia is a safe country and most Latvians are friendly and polite people, so there are no need for huge amounts of police boots on ground. But Yes, we to have police officers patrolling in civilian clothes and masked police cars. Also we do not tend to attack people on streets and ravage our own cities, as it's the case in some foreign countries, so You can entrust large masses of people with torches.

Some curious facts. The hill where you got the torches, Basteja kalns (j in Latvian is pronounced as y as in yellow), is actually a man made hill. It is a pile of rubble of the old stone wall that used to fortify Riga when Riga was very small (Old town area). If I remember right, part of the wall was destroyed, part torn down since it no longer served its purpose, and the rubble was just piled up next to the cannal. I have never cried before when hearing our national anthem, but since the war in Ukrain, I cry every time.... I have the same reaction to Latvian and Ukrainian anthem, just uncontrolable tears. There is a lot of solidarity with the Ukrainian people, as we all have suffered genocide and all kinds of atrocities at the hands of soviet russians. We are very aware of our history even though during soviet times our history was supressed, distorted and almost earased. Many of the Latvian kids during soviet times were told, you must study history in school (soviet curriculum) well, but remember, what your grandma/grandpa tells you is the truth. And it is very hard on us all seeing history repeat itself, the stories told by our grandparents come to life again in Ukraine. There are a lot of people who have misstrust of the large russian population living in Latvia (who have refused to learn the Latvia language and who continue watching russian propaganda)... And they often say, "you must let go of the past, forgive.... Our generation has nothing to do with it"..... But how can you forgive, if the same behaviour continue, the same atrocities continue, the hate speach in russian media towards the Baltics and other post soviet countries has always been there... How? The past is not in the past coz it is continuing in the present.
