Rugby Doc (Doc J Zimmerman, Rugby Coaching)
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 29 ต.ค. 2019
Doc J Zimmerman is a USA Rugby Level 300 Coach with over 30 years of rugby experience. Dr. J is the director of rugby at the Jersey Shore Sharks Rugby Club on the Jersey Shore of Southern NJ in the USA. He is the head coach of the men's rugby club, skills coach for the High School team and developer and coach of the Shark's co-ed youth tag rugby program. Doc graduated from one of the nation's top rugby schools, Life University. Dr. J was on scholarship at Life U for rugby as a prop forward and played on many of their championship teams. Doc was a select side player with the Eastern Rugby Union (ERU) and the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union (EPRU). As the years went on, Doc decided that he would do the opposite of all of his tight five forward friends and gradually lose weight and become fitter. Dr. J played his last rugby game at 53 years old with the Jersey Shore Gray Sharks Old Boys Club. Too skinny to continue to be a prop, his wife wisely suggested he retire from active playing.
Defensive Rugby Training Circuit: Cohesion, Blitz, Drift, Tackle
In this defensive rugby training circuit, we set up a training circuit where we perform a 1 v 1 wrap box drill, move to cohesion (defending in 3's) then on to our defensive fold, working on the blitz and then the drift defense.

Start the game from an attacking breakdown position about 20 meters out. Once the attack runs into contact (tackle or wrap) the coach calls out the cone color of the scoring zone that is to be scored ...

What about a crunch with a 2.5 kg plate behind the head?
A great 1st drill but the Defensive players lack linespeed and are getting square on thw middle allowing offensive players advantage line and the ability to step either way.
Thank you. I appreciate the advice.
Thanks you so much for teaching me I'm going to play state level
My man getting his nuts cracked 🤣
Nice jorts 😉
This was awesome. Regards from Oz mate
Except from set play, you are not starting from stationary position and often are retiring before you form your defensive line. This drill only does half the job. An opposed drill from different situations would be far more effective.
Thank you! We do all of that as you suggest. This was just a warm-up I added in for variety. I saw one of the premiership teams doing this drill as a warm-up and thought I would add it in for variety. I tweeked it a bit and added more breakdown points ( one day, we did the length of the pitch with over 20 breakdown points) - Rugby Doc J Zimmerman
Thank u
Tq..
Nice simple drill
Nice drill- players need to carry ball away from the tackler/ contact initiating shoulder to minimise being stripped/ tackler slowing down ball placement and negating quick attack ball.
Thanks for the exercises. I need to try this out.
Americans dont get rugby
Lose the pad for development 👍🏼
We do. That is the progression after we warm-up with the pads. Thanks for the feed back!
I love the Doc’s channel, but a lot of these guys are leading with their forearms, which is a penalty (not in league but in union)
So true. The sad thing was that I explained the correct way to fend and demonstrated it! The good news is when you have film of fending poorly, I was able to use it as a teaching tool and make corrections for the next time.
Doc, to be honest yah, I did that move you taught us, guess what?, it didn't work. The time when I try to fend the defender off, the defender just slapped my hand down and tackled me down It didn't work😢
Skill issue
thats what a defender is supossed to do lmao stiff arm doesn't ALWAYS work
it also depends on how low the defender is, if they are too low, your stiff are won't really work, and they are able to commit a tackle
The drill looks interesting. Some things would have to be modified, in my opinion> 1. Attack with more speed. 2. Attackers with more depth. 3. Receivers with different angles of attack. 4. Improve passing skills. 5. First, it would be interesting to start with a 3 vs 3 and then move on to a 3 vs 4 and then vs 5. Or in the 3 vs 3 version, place a 4 player as the second defensive line. Kind regards.
Thank you for the helpful tips. I appreciate it.
Good stuff.
What does the training the rest of the body look like and what sort of split do you use?
My split is chest, shoulders and triceps - Monday and Thursday. Back (with rear delts, traps) and biceps - Tuesday and Friday. Legs on Wednesday and Saturday. I do the same sort of training. Set up 4 -5 exercises for big body parts, 3 for small ( bi and tri) and do 3-4 giants sets with 15 or less seconds rest between sets.
DOC, As of this past 2023 spring, we have been sanctioned heavily for touching the player on the ground with our hands when we've, as you call it 'sealing' that we've freely been able to do the last number of years. Also we received sanctions for shins touching the player on the ground when jackaling. We first experienced this in our first games this year in March 2023 with EPRRS refs. This is due to the Jan 2023 clarifications that includes: 'Off feet: Players are off their feet when any other part of the body is supported by the ground or players on the ground.' Combine that with this, Ruck law 15.12: 'Players must endeavour to remain on their feet throughout the ruck' - So absorbing the first counter while touching the player on the ground seems to no longer fly. A conversation with a EPRRS ref concurred the Jan 2023 Guidelines was the reason for the sanctions. Not that everyone is on the same page (yet), but we had to change technique to save our season and are trying not to look back. Law Application Guideline January 2023 www.world.rugby/the-game/laws/guidelines/25 Players on the ground Players who put their hands on the floor at tackles, rucks and mauls are subject to sanction, although judgement can be used if the player is using the ground briefly to maintain their own balance and stability. Law definitions and relevant clauses Off feet: Players are off their feet when any other part of the body is supported by the ground or players on the ground. On feet: Players are on their feet if no other part of their body is supported by the ground or players on the ground. Tackle law 14.8a Other players must: Remain on their feet and release the ball and the ball-carrier immediately, and 14.8b Remain on their feet when they play the ball. Ruck law 15.12: Players must endeavour to remain on their feet throughout the ruck Maul law 16.9: All other players in a maul must endeavour to stay on their feet Here is the link to the full Law Application Guidelines and their timeline www.world.rugby/the-game/laws/guidelines/26
Do the tacklers always roll negative, regardless of which direction the ball has come from?
No, the whole scenario would flip if the ball came from opposite side
Thanks😢
Good drill for my under 12s will give it a go at our next training session
We use it with our U-14 as well. They like it
Good drill but some are using the wrong shoulder.
New players that came out that night. We fixed them.
@@rugbydocdocjzimmermanrugby6185 I’ve noticed they coach it the opposite way in NFL if they’re former players?
@@mickeyjhorner Yes, most of the new players we acquire, that have never played rugby, have all played football.
Brilliant video, thank you
Thank you
No you can't enter a ruck from the side. The gate is at the back. 🇿🇦
Shocking drill, all you have done is make them react to the whistle. They have learn to read the game, instead of the whistle get the players to call up. When they shuffle backwards great them to take wider steps and importantly heads up, involve the ball ie use another to be the opposition half so when hands on move.
We got rid of the whistle about a year ago. and use a scrum half instead
Get the lads to work as a defensive line . Get them to observe the players down the line and encourage eachother to get into the defensive line before moving forwards for the next tackle .
Stage 3.. l would have like to see a game that incorporated Stage 1 and 2 (with more emphasis on the Defence tackle than just an 3 v 3 attack/defence run
Our next progression is a live defensive folding drill with a live attacking line. Check this out as the progression after stage 3, th-cam.com/video/qCFXvgy5hd0/w-d-xo.html
Great video!! Thanks for sharing with us!
How are You Rugby Doc,so wanted to ask cause i noticed the boys are getting low but looks like they are kinda supporting their knees with the body of the attacker.
That video was filmed in Wales in 2020. Rucking rules have definitely evolved. Good observation, players cannot support their body by leaning, laying on the players on the ground
Thankyou sir. I will try this for my u18 team
You are very welcome sir.
This is good stuff J appreciate it!!
Great job!

Wow Doc! Great content! Love your channel!
Awesome Footage. Thank you!
Not supporting their weight a lot of the time with the elbows on the deck, so yes, you will be pinged.
Get there hands up and across, also you are one dimensional. Move them to the other side then run through.
The drill progresses to 4 dimensional with all four sides of the box running. We also vary defender positions where they mark #1 an # 3 and for further variation we add a third defender.
at 2:09 into video the chaos progression is added.
🤣
Big lad in the green shirt needs to chase his feet through the contact 😉
True
thank you for giving us your great experience coach , im learning everyday from your videos , i have no idea what can i do without ur videos , god bless you, appreciate it
Thank you
thank you for sharing all these informations coach ! keep it up god bless you
Thank you!
The Player was right - the Coach was wrong. Unfortunately this is an example of poor coaching. The comment "But that's what we want to do in the drill" - despite the fact it's illegal & the player raised the fact it's illegal is problematic.
The coach meant come in at 45 degree angle. We corrected that. We definitely do not want players coming in from the side
Ian Gardner top coach top bloke
Doc, cheers for the share, great practice drills that are progressed well and are applicable at many levels
Thank you John!
In reality after a turnover the attacking line wouldn’t be set. It would still be in defensive mode. You would usually have to have at least one phase before teams could realign, communicate before executing a wide shift. I like the concept of quick turnover into attack but for reality once the tackle was made / turnover completed could you throw in a pick and go with support and then execute the wide shot?
Damn. I got this drill off the Harlequins. I like your idea to extend the drill with pick and go
LOL, when I brought the drill home and performed with my team, my assistant coach had his own idea how the drill should run concerning defense and we will set it up in a different manner next time. I will film and send it to you.
Great video doc. We also use the pass and follow box drill, however when players are going clockwise around the grid we use a left to right pass and also encourage the players run a couple of paces first whilst the receiver also sets off and takes the ball on the move. 👍🏻 I find this is a more natural flow of the arms in the pass.
Nice. U should film that.
@@rugbydocdocjzimmermanrugby6185 keep meaning to film some sessions but usually get caught up in setting things up! I need to get a good assistant
