Festival Masterclass with Graham Johnson OBE and Leeds Lieder Young Artists
Known worldwide as a “peerless song accompanist” (‘Daily Telegraph’), Graham Johnson reimagined and revitalised the song recital with the advent of his ‘Songmakers’ Almanac’. His complete recordings of Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and a treasure trove of French song for Hyperion have set the benchmark for modern song recordings, and his scholarly programme notes have redesigned how performers write about music.
Graham joins us straight from masterclasses at Guildhall School of Music and Drama to share a lifetime of knowledge and insight with our Young Artists.

German soprano Nikola Hillebrand made her UK recital debut at Leeds Lieder at the 2022 Festival. It was a knockout performance resulting in ‘Gramophone’ magazine writing that “Hillebrand’s radiant, gilt tone fits this repertoire lusciously, her diction is excellent and she communicates with warmth.” Known as a Schubert singer of the highest quality, it’s a delight to invite this special artist ...

The first event in our French Song Day could not be given by a more appropriate artist. The French have claimed Dame Felicity Lott as one of their own. In recognition of her extraordinary service to French music, the French government awarded her the titles ‘Officier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres’ in 1990 and ‘Chevalier dans la Légion d’Honneur’ in 2001. Here she provides our internation...

Glorious song, gloriously sung...
Stunning.
Is that the late great Jane Bonner turning pages? Wonderful (and yet a little scary) lady <3
great
bravissima complimenti💓💓
The wonderful CS.
His constant movement is quite distracting.
Wunderschön!!!! Brava!!!!!🎉❤
A master !

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Singers should not only sound like a singer but also l o o k like a singer. I don't know what he was doing exactly bendiing down on arrival, appearing to pick something up off the floor but he looked like a removal man; he looks scruffy about the neck too. Then there's all that prancing around as he delivers the programme. Oh, yes, I forgot, he sings too. It wasn't until about ten minutes into the recital that I could erase from my mind the afore‐listed visual distractions. Pity.
19/07/2024 How lucky am I to have found this great performance today!
Magnífica.
A most beautiful performance from both musicians, thank you! Also rather lovely to see the dear, late Jane Bonner page turning
stop acting and learn to SING
oy
what horrible diction and singing
Concerning Dame Lott's Hahn translation: As far as my French knowledge goes, "aimer bien" is more a casual "like" in English. So I have interpreted this song always as a serenade to an unrequited love. If anyone can give me a definitive translation or explanation of this line, yes please! I'm performing this song myself soon.
Well done!
The first student is just a master!
Delivered with wonderful effect of beauty, musicianship, artistic perfection and Hurray
My favourite baritone! I saw him sing such roles as Don Giovanni, Wolfram, Beckmesser, Onegin etc
06:25 Lachen und Weinen, D. 777 08:13 Nachtstück, D. 672 13:20 Nachtviolen, D. 752 16:15 Gretchens Bitte, D. 564 24:10 Kennst du das Land, D. 321 28:17 Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt, D. 877 31:25 Heiss mich nicht reden, D. 877 37:33 Der Hirt auf dem Felsen, D. 965
great singer but i cannot get the image out of my miind of spence as the guardsman at the gate of "the merry old land of oz". his voice and interpetations only get better and better.
Breathtaking❣️
💖🌹
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Wonderful concert. Thanks for sharing. And just a question: What is this little gadget lying next to the pianist shoe's flashing regularly blue? A metronome? A recorder or microphone?
Mega Anton 🎉
my only criticism is that the great singer moves around a bit much. But yes, I think simon keenlyside is my kinda guy.
Yes, Sir Simon wins you over with his unique artistry. And I also like the pianist. Because he refrains from point making.
Fabulous students, fabulous teacher.
He is really something, and so serious 2:02:36 2:02:36 2:02:36
I would rather that he stayed a bit more still without turning his back to us. That being said, they are both consummate artists.
haha, you are so mean, but nice work true
What mesmerizing „Dass sie hier gewesen“!
So exciting to have been a part of this! Well done everyone
Why did you remove my former reaction🤔🤔🤔
Aksel has had the dvantage of being on stage as a child and shows great promise as a young baritone.
Wonderful!
What stunning performances. ❤
Thank you Dawn! Glad you enjoyed the recital
What a wise man - and he's spot on (of course!). Thank you so much for the link.
Amazing to hear these talented youngsters. Well done, so glad it was not a competition.
Oh, that was fantastic!!!!! Enjoyed listening to this enormously. Thank you.
My goodness, that was fascinating! Were you assigned that first song, or did you choose it? I think you already have a great talent to bring a song to life with both your voice and body language. This was taking that to a whole new level. The interplay with the second song was completely delightful.
would be better if audible
What wasn't audible? Make sure you don't have it muted....
Great work! Big congrats x 👏👏👏 Ace collaborations
Love seems to leap across the room in Aksel’s rendering of Geheimes! Superb.
And there is Aksel Rykvinn in the front row - glorious treble and now a lovely mature baritone voice.
Special treat to hear Messrs Vignoles and Middleton play together.
Bravo Aksel 👏
Thank you, Matthew!:)
