I've taken up woodworking/wood crafting as a hobby over the last 4 years. What started as a project here and there has become too many projects in not enough time. When I decided to try and sell a few things I quickly learned this hobby pays for itself. Invest in yourself! Most of what I make ($) gets invested into tools and material or goes back into the next project. I hope to encourage others to take up crafting in some way shape or another. I enjoy life on the couch however spending time in the garage has been much more fulfilling. Music, tv, and the occasional beer. (don't drink and operate machinery) = a distraction from life. I'm always up for criticism and pointers and welcome feed back. If you have found your way to my channel, welcome, and thank you for giving me the time.
Very first craft show. Preparation.
So. After years of making and selling locally (FB and OfferUp) I’m finally going to my first craft show for the purpose of selling. Two of them matter a fact. My neighbor and I will be sharing a booth at two separate shows. I’ve been making things in my spare time which has been so limited. What I have hear has take most of the year to accumulate. Thought I would share what I’m taking. If you got any ideas please share them. Hopefully I can give you an idea or two. I’ve included woodworking, laser engraving and recently 3D printing into the repertoire. hope to share footage of the show, some of the booths and what does good and what does bad. Stay tuned.

I'm building inventory for my first craft show in a few months. I purchased my laser engraver (XTool F1) to build upon the items I can make and supply here at GarageSaws. Here, I plan to add small for-sale items that are easy and, most importantly, fun to make. I've been laser-cutting Christmas ornaments, leatherette patches for hats, and some etched/engraved items like flasks and Zippo lighter...

Made a video of me making this sweetheart board set. I cheated on this one and bought a pre laminated 2’x2’x1” of teak from Lowes. From start to finish this one took just over an hour. Update - Happy to say I was able to sell this set the following weekend. I made it for my neighbor to put in his show.. Sold with two other charcuterie boards I finished this same day.

How much do you sell it for?
@@bylpugel9863 I have good success selling from $75 for a 24” wide 3 tier, up to $150 for 36” wide 4 tier. I buy cull lumber from the big box stores during the year. I have a video kind of showing that on my channel. Ive made them for as low as $30. A ton Of variables but when the season comes I have a ton Of material to use. When I run out I pay full price.
What is the transfer tape you are using and how well does it do?
The brand is Greenstar. I purchased it from US Cutter. I use both transparent and non-transparent. But I’ve found that I’ve really liked the transparent. When I’m doing multicolors, it helps me with alignment between the colors. I hope that helps. Thank you for watching.
Great advice! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with all of us who are just starting. I wish you the best, and keep learning because there's a whole community growing behind you waiting for more.
I've never seen, or used, semi-transparent transfer tape!
@@jayedwin98020 it’s great. When I stencil I use a small overlap in colors. Really helps me with lining things up.
What software are you using to edit your videos?
@@jayedwin98020 I’ve changed a few times as I learn. I’m now using Divinci Resolve. I will never out grow it. I’m using the most basic of what it has to offer. Some videos I’m able to edit on my phone.
Did you have to re-shorten the leg pieces to match the length of the last leg because it was a little short, and then made the other three legs to match it?
@@jayedwin98020 I’m not sure if I follow. I used a stop block so they should all be the same. I’ll watch the video again to see. 😬

this video is 2 years old. I really hope in those two years you've learned some math and bought a tape measure. you made this so much more complicated than it needed to be simply because you don't know what 5/8 times 2 plus 1/8 is.

Are you using spiral blades? What size 4,5 ,6 or 7?

Great Video. One question...Did you think about drilling some drainage holes in the bottom of each box? I can't wait to build one for my wife...
do u treat it?
I do not. When i first started i did and I had a number of times i wouldn't get a sale because people are scared of the chemicals leeching into the soil. My new rule is this, "I don't paint, and I do'nt stain". I sell most things sanded and advertise ready to paint or stain. Its actually nice because it takes a lot off my plate, makes the build a little cheaper and most of all if I paint something in white i don't get someone asking of i got one in blue. lol It works. I appreciate that. Report back. Let me know if you hit a problem. I didn't explain well enough. Goof luck.
Looks great, what sofware did you use for the color pattern?
It was actually provided to me on graph paper. Later, I made a template in Illustrator and colored the squares. The client was particular about the colors in each square. Good customer, though. They own an optometrist. And I wear glasses. Lol. They provided me with an exam and a pair as an extra, thanks. Funny, someone contacted me recently to see if I could laser engrave a leather journal. It turns out it was for this same person's son, who was leaving the country. Also, thank you for taking the time to look.
Nice! I’m going to use this rough idea to make one a little more upright to go against a wall on the side of my garage. Thank you! New sub
Yep. I had someone ask for one last year. If I remember correctly, I made it tiers taller and was a leaner. Please report back. Good luck. I've also thought a hanger would be cool-something that hung from a tall fence. That way, you wouldn't lose real estate under it.
How does it not move??
HA! What is the image? I got it taped down. I also taped down my dispenser,
13:03 is your table saw the 7491RS? If so, how do you like it? I just bought one and haven’t put it together yet!
I had to go check. It is a DWS779. I was going to buy the one with a laser, but for the price difference, I just decided to use my eyes instead. I can only compare it to the old Makita started with. I love it, though. The bearings are smooth when you pull the saw in and out. It does take up some room, though, and the vacuum deal on the back is tiny. Gets clogged easily, but I will admit I have yet to hook up my vacuum yet. Soon though.
@@garagesaws5729 the DWS779 is the miter saw. I’m wondering if your table saw is the DWS7491RS?
Sorry, haha. Mine says DWE7491. I was stumped by what the RS stands for because mine doesn't say that, but when I searched for it online, I noticed the model number followed by Rolling Stand. So yeah, I think we have the same saw. I love it. Fun fact: I've always had to use it with an extension cord. Recently, I had power added to my small shop I just built, and holy moly. Saw kicks butt more than ever with full power.
@@garagesaws5729 thank you for getting back to me! I too have had to run my saw on an extension cord. Soon, I hope to be able to have it in my garage. Instead of pulling it out from the shed and setting it up in the driveway to use.
@@mrmyblessednest1722 The biggest problem I ever had cutting in about three years was when I made a French cleat wall storage system. Cutting 3/4" plywood at a 45° angle wasn't as easy as I hoped. But that was when I was still on an extension cord.
11:07 no glue? Just brads and screws?
No glue. I brad things in place, but I usually add a small strip on the inside and screw that strip in. It sandwiches everything together.
Have never heard the “refinishing tool” you’re using 5:43
Oh, it's great. So, I just posted a new video mentioning it again. I spent this morning making a video on sourcing some cheap lumber. Anyway, when I was done, I went out back to see what I could make. I have someone waiting on two wavy flags with a Seattle Kraken design. I just used my (restorer) tool. That's what it's called. It's worth the money, and it's not expensive.
What size screws do you use? How far up the legs do you measure to put the shelves? Thank you for the video! Nice to know people don’t always expect to be paid for helping others.
I placed the bottom box like 4-6" off the bottom. What ever I do on the bottomw i match on top. then split the difference. I advertise as 48" tall but at an angle. Depending on the piece you start with I sometimes fudge the numbers. A ten footer works but an 8 footer wont. Just have fun with it and learn from the first one. When I make a few they are all the same. The next time i make them they are different. Hope that helps
Oh i forgot screw size. I usually use 2" or 2.5" for all the structural stuff. For the boxes, I use 1 1/8". I think I'll be adding a wood piece in the corners. I feel like I'd like a little more bite in the corners than in between the 5/8" picket.
I think I’ll try one
Is there a video on how to build a flip work table for the miter saw? I was thinking building a flip table for my table saw.
I do not. I was shooting from the hip. I would have done so many things differently, but it did serve its purpose well. I recently built a shop which isn't finished. I incorporated my flip-up table into the wall. So now it is attached but can still flip up and down. I'll see if I can put together a small video. I've got tons of things recorded that need to be edited. Thanks for the comment. Perhaps I can build a new one and record as I go.
Nice work, thanks for sharing
Did you find that the 5/8 fence pickets in the bottom was strong enough to support the soil (approx 10 inches) you put into the planter box?
Oh, it's plenty strong enough. I'm not sure how long it will last, but I usually use the strongest-looking boards.
It is not DIY, it is professional, you had lots of cool toys which made the job look easy but it very good.
All my toys are purchased one at a time. Everything was paid for from jobs or projects I've done. I just recently bought a laser engraver. It will pay for its self eventually. Thank you for the comment and for taking a peek.
@@garagesaws5729 looks good, regardless of idiot comments
Do you have plans?
"Or finish it" you sound like me! Lol
Great looking planters! Great video! Only suggestion I would make is to use a 1/4 round router bit and soften the tops of the legs.
That's a great idea, actually, and now that I'm thinking about it would be great for the bottom of the legs. I do it on the bottom of my legs when i remember. Helps keep the edges from splitting when you drag them.
You don’t need to show drilling every screw hole
Scroll on if you don’t need to see it but some of us are more visual and don’t want steps skipped.
Man, those are some wet pickets! I can smell them from here!
Great build. The fence looks really nice too. I would put some waterproof sealant on them and sell them for around $250. That sounds like a great deal. Thanks for the video.
Helped us out. Thank you!
You should make more videos! Nice build. Thank you for the lengths of board and dimensions.
Thank you. I have so much recorded. The editing is the hardest part. Hopefully, I will have more out soon. I've since built a small shop. I hope it will make things even better.
Thank you for the video. What do you think about attaching the boxes to the legs without a shelf underneath?
What size drill bit did you use and what size screws did you use?
Awesome job ! Looking forward to seeing more videos from you !
Great video, as a woman I know I can do this because of how you explain it. That You because I am building my garden out this winter and summer, I want it to be my happy place. Will send a photo this summer 2024 for my new garden channel.
Thats awesome. It really is a simple build and looks good, I plan to make a change on the inside corners of the planter boxes to make sure it last longer. Mine is 3-4 years old and still standing, so thats good. The neighborhood cats love to lie in them. lol
I just accidentally found your video and I'm intrigued with your projects but I have a question. Do you drill drain holes in the herb boxes? I'm also thinking these could be built to fit plastic or even metal planting trays inside to help make the cedar last even longer. Just a thought. good job, thanks for sharing
I do predrill. As soon as the wood splits you need to make a new hole. Ive found taking the time to predrill works best. There isnt much meat there. The idea of plastic containers is a great idea.
Can you tape two boards together and cut two designs at a time? 👻
Yes, you can. Sorry for the delayed response. We have some family stuff going on, but all is well. I have tried cutting more than one at a time. I think it's too much for my old saw. I've reverted to one at a time. I have seen people cut as many as 4-5 at a time, though. I've used this one for about 4 years. It was given to me. I've made at least 1K with projects. It's time for me to invest in a new scroll saw. I eyeballing the Dewalt.
Hey Brother. Just wanted to say thank you for sharing this with us. The Scroll-Saw Doesn't Get the Love it Deserves. They're irreplaceable on many things.
