    For anyone with a sticky directional switch that springs back to the top setting, try the following to fix it: Remove all stereo etc and unplug the blue plug and the white plug. Now look at the cables that attached to the heating controls.....they should be straight. If you see a bend then this needs to be straightened out. My cars plastic parts weren't broken, just the cable had a bend. I applied a little heat with a cigarette lighter and bent back the metal cable. Be careful not to break it so be patient. The give away was when you go to buy a new cable....you can see they are sold dead straight, they don't have a bend on either end. Hope this helps!! Garages were quoting couple hundred just to diagnose the problem 😵‍💫😵‍💫

    Thank you again. I need to check mine. I just got the starter on. I told you how much that video helped me. It didn't help they sent the wrong starter in the right box the first time. Just today I bolted the engine back up. Have one other problem. No 12 volts on the battery cable to the starter solenoid. I ran a jumper to the terminal from the battery + and the key worked. Someone online is telling me to run a fresh wire from the + terminal and splice it under the car. Insulate accordingly. I didn't hear the fuel pump till today when I replaced the battery terminals (new battery too). The cable is the next step.

    Engine is down. Mines a CDI so it’s a bit different. I unbolted the AC compressor and flipped that over, hoses and all. The water pump is next. One starter bolt is forward, outside of the inter cooler duct. My injection pump is in the way of taking out the fan. So I’m planning on cutting a small hole in the side right across from the second starter bolt and using a magnetized socket to remove it. Then it goes back together

      @@noflannelcarrepairs8312 for sure. Today I took off the rear valance. The back aluminum brace. I didn’t understand the process before I found your video so I unbolted the right rear engine mount. Lucky I didn’t break anything. So I bolted that back up. Unbolted the two rear subframe bolts and moved them upfront. Engine came down nicely. I made one mistake. I left the E brake on. After I dropped the engine I let the e brake off and boom. The front of the engine dropped another 6 inches. I can’t believe how incredibly tough it is to get to the starter. Years ago I owned a mid 00s Z4. When I realized I had to take the intake off, and the starter was under it, up top the engine. I sold it after that. This starter is on a whole different level. Tomorrow I will pull up the inter cooler , and as much as I hate to pull the AC lines off but at this point it’s not worth much as it is so tomorrow the AC lines, the throttle body, the inter cooler all come off and the starter out. I know, after all this I need to buy a new starter. No way I put a used one on after knowing how incredibly hard it is to change. I do want to pull the bad one apart, get it working if I can and run the engine. Then I’ll know it’s worth the investment. I could have bought a good use gas Smart for the money I have into it. I just hate to give up with what I have into it. So after sitting 4 years. We will see what it takes to fix this car.

    Did you have to do anything with oil pump, a few people have mentioned removing that torx bolt next to where the crank shaft locking tool goes before removing the oil pump?

    • @noflannelcarrepairs8312
      @noflannelcarrepairs8312 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are planning on removing / replacing the oil pump it sits inside the timing case cover, so you’ll already have the cover removed from the engine block.

    • @thomaswhatling6709
      @thomaswhatling6709 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking about when you remove the timing cover to replace chain, can you just remove the e torxs bolts, and pull it away from engine block, or is there a special procedure to remove oil pump and timing chain cover As a hole. Someone mentioned removing the torx bolt that goes into the timing chain cover to de-tension the oil pump? Thanks Tom

    • @noflannelcarrepairs8312
      @noflannelcarrepairs8312 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thomaswhatling6709 oh ok I see. In order to remove the timing chain cover it’s quite a procedure. In brief the engine mount has to be removed on driver side, rocker cover and sump must be removed, you can de-tension the chain before you remove the timing case cover but it’s not really required as you will be removing the chain anyway as the case gasket sits behind it.

  • @johnmcdonald1251
    @johnmcdonald1251 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent succinct video. Water pump tip is brilliant. I changed mine because of extreme rattle on startup even when just stopped and restarted. I think my problem was the hydraulic tensioner. It was loosing oil when the engine stopped and chain becoming slack. Thicker oil would have helped but probably wouldn’t have been good elsewhere. Kit cost €135. Chain wasn’t stretched much. Slots on the back of camshafts are slightly off centre so the lobes facing in is kind of obvious. I didn’t have timing kit so tried to put back on the chain exactly as the old came off as I’ve done before but this didn’t work this time. Pistons were hitting valves on hand turning. So I removed plug 1 and set engine to tdc with a rod inserted and resting on piston and a bar across through the 2 slots on the back of the camshafts. Completely crude but no choice. Put on chain then and check timing a few times. Right or wrong, it worked. Other tips. I got away without removing sump. Kit suppliers recommended removal but I took that chance too. Secondly, 11mm bolt beneath water pump is a drain plug for coolant in engine. Handy for catching as much coolant as you can. Alternator and air con compressor must be removed to get timing cover off. I used a picture of a timing cover for sale on eBay as a reference for what I was not able to see clearly in my engine bay. Hope this helps as much as the video above.

    Two years ago I took my 2010 Corsa's centre console apart to replace two tiny bulbs behind the controls. I unbent the bowden cable, put grease on the heater matrix gears under the dash, and it worked... for a month, until it snapped! I bought a new bowden cable set (OEM part 93189466), cut my hands up again fitting it only for the vent dial to shortly stop rotating again. I suspect it's got bent due to the heater matrix vents being "sticky" with old seals and thus hard to open. It's a pig of a job and I can't be bothered doing it agan. I've now left the vent dial on the windscreen/feet setting and fortunately the heat dial still rotates perfectly. In my opinion it's poor Vauxhall design to use a long, stiff cable to move plastic gears, especially as the vents under the dash get harder to move as they age. More modern vehicles use electric motors and buttons to change vent settings.

    • @peter_chan

      because I'm thinking of just handing my car to the garage to fix it

    • @Bluewave42
      @Bluewave42 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@peter_chan Yes, there's no point fitting a new cable as it will eventually bend/break again. Leaving the vent on windscreen/feet works ok even when aircon is needed to clear the inside screen. If I really need to change to face vents, it can be done by reaching under the passenger-side dash and manually moving the gears - it's awkward getting a hand up there with lots of sharp plastic edges, but doable (unclipping the bottom plastic vent directing air to the feet helps with access). To replace the heater matrix would be a complicated job involving taking the dash apart. A garage would charge a lot due to the number of hours needed.

      Yes as you say, lock bar and pin. The tool kits are cheap enough to buy online. The engines are pretty good as long as they’re maintained, I think the biggest problem is the lack of temp gauge. It’s good to check once in a while that the radiator fan is working to avoid overheating, they’re designed to run hot and will lose coolant due to expansion if the fan fails.
