CONTROL THE BALL AND YOUR OPPONENT
The foundation of great tennis lies in control of the ball. When you can control the ball, you can control the court-and when you can control the court, you dictate the match.
Too often, players focus on power or speed without understanding that none of it matters if you can’t place the ball exactly where it needs to go. That’s why mastering ball control is essential. It’s not just about hitting-it’s about precision, strategy, and using every shot to take charge of the game.
In this lesson, I’ll share three simple, easy-to-implement techniques that will transform how you think about ball control. These methods will help you develop a deeper understanding of how to command the ball, take control of the court, and ultimately dictate the outcome of your matches.

THE PURPOSE OF FOOTWORK
มุมมอง 92128 วันที่ผ่านมา
The term footwork is meaningless unless a player first understands its purpose. Once the goal of footwork is understood, players will be much better equipped to execute better court movement, be more balanced in their strokes, and recover faster to the next ball. TENNIS MOVEMENT; Pre-Innovation in 4 Steps
Have not heard this term before.. pre innovation? Where is this from?? By chance are you referring to ground contact time and impulse?
@@Tonetone389 your term sounds the same. The term I use was used by Dr Richard Schonbern who did a lot of the scientific study for tennis back in the 80/90s. Where does the term “ground contact and impulse” come from?
@ gotcha, I was confused haha that’s cool. Haven’t heard of him! Will try and check it out. GCT and impulse are both from physics
@ I hope I got his surname correct. He has written several books related to tennis sport science 🙏
Thank you for the video! How is this mental? It seems like this is all physical.
@@JustinParkTennis the mental comes from the “touching the ground for as little time as possible”. Doing that requires the brain to prepare the feet for “leaving” before they actually make contact. This exercises the brain in a specific way that builds speed
@biggerbettertennis thanks for the response! I'm going to give it a shot. I've noticed that you're players have a heavy emphasis on footwork and therefore have great timing.
@@JustinParkTennis I start by teaching “Ground” which has pre-innovation, Contact Foot and Line as its pillars - good footwork comes from those pillars. Thank for your interest and feedback 🙏
@@biggerbettertennis starting with teaching how to harness the energy from the ground is genius. It has evolved the way Ive been seeing tennis. Its also really interesting to see how each player uses the ground differently. Players like carlos use it more vertically, while players like novak seem to lean more towards using it rotationally by using the ground as an anchor point.
@@JustinParkTennis great observations Justin. So many lessons involve the arm and the swing.
All the detailed instructions I need for a good volley. I will work on it. Can you do a video on Loading and unloading on ground strokes ,using the ground properly. Thanks.
Thank so much for your kind comment. I’ve just posted a new video on “Footwork”. Let me know if that covers your query adequately on loading and unloading.
@@biggerbettertennis I just checked out your Footwork and ground videos. I kind of have some ideas . Thanks.
@ let me know how if you need clarification
Brilliant! Could you please make a technical video on how to improve the directional control (which I find very important but missing in my own offensive mode).
You mean the ability to hit the ball down the line or cross court right?
@biggerbettertennis - yes. When I play with advanced players (NRTP 4.5+), one of the things I see in their play is the ability to dominate every point by either controlling depth (passive) or moving me around the court with great control (active) and therefore easily inducing unforced errors. I would really love to develop this skill. I think these skills are far more effective and can last me much longer in my tennis career than big power and crazy jumpy top spin.
@biggerbettertennis - thanks for the excellent video. Would you please share your thoughts on how to deal with physical effects of nerves on the match play - playing “tight”.
People who be me tell me to be more aggressive. When I’m aggressive my mistakes increase. 🔁
@@DJScharlie Aggressive is ok if it's done in a rational way. I teach a shot selection system called “The DNO Theory” which has been really good at telling players the best times to be aggressive. There is a video in this series on the DNO Thory
@ Appreciate the response. I’ll check it out, I’m already guessing it’s Defence Neutral or Offensive. 😆
Excellent video! Thanks for this!
Thank you.
Very helpful. Control is more important than power. Thanks
Thanks Mark. Appreciate your comment.
nice and concise; I've just come from sessions with 3 and 4 yr old preschoolers proving that it is easy to do, in fact easier than a groundstroke to get near instant reward from 80% success while walking forwards or backwards parallel with a mini net. The flow on benefits to all later shots provide support for "The Case for Volleys first"
and yet, so many coaches online and those seen live, continue to try to defy physics by talking about "putting more weight into the ball" (which would surely infer that putting on excess weight would result in faster balls); nice to see some sense matched to simple graphics
“Putting on more weight”, there’s an idea 😂 Thanks for your comments. The beauty of The Line is that even a young player can gain strength and better timing with the technique.
@@biggerbettertennis you're right, that's why awareness of their own body parameters is actually the most important aspect for beginners (of all ages) to develop, so they can relate their contact points to their head-hip-heel alignment (I cue with the "3Hs"). I also explain and demo that when they may experiment with differing grips and stances, the rule is never broken.
Great ideas about determining whether you are on offense or defense. When my partner serves I use a similar strategy where I view his serve as a “red light” serve where I hold my position, or a “green light” serve where I am more aggressive looking for a poach opportunity. I’ll try your method next time I play!
Thanks Neal. The servers partner in doubles is automatically in an offensive (feet) position, and if the server can help create an uncontrolled high (above the net band) ball to poach, that's the DNO Theory in action. It's no more complicated than that 😃

Is this muscle memory?
Muscle memory would be an easy way to look at it but more importantly it's the implications for learning news skills that gives it more credibility. The main point of the video is that the neurological pathways are the key to learning (mentally & physically), and that putting yourself under pressure in practice increases and enhances the learning process. Thanks so much for your message 🙏
Cocaine may have something to do with it.
Thank you so much! My current tennis coach said something about that too.
What are these exercises?
The exercises are as shown… (1) Run The Lines (2) Forward & Back on the Line (3) Fast Feet for 6 seconds, and anything else that trains the brain to plan a movement ahead of the actual physical activity
@@paullee1521 Any exercise that requires fast footwork AND with the player mentally anticipating fast recovery affter touching the ground will improve pre-innovation
The 3 steps are very helpful! Thank you.
Helpful advice, love ur videos. Thank you.
Great lesson, I'll try that tonight when I go to tennis. Thank you Paul! 🙏🙂
Let me know how it goes! Good luck
Great tips, ur videos are very useful. Thank you so much! I'll try those tonight, when I have my tennis lessons.
Perfect, I just wanted to hit the ball faster and more consistently. Thank you!
I love watching ur videos, thank you. 🙂🙏
Thank you so much! I'll try that next time I do volleying.
Great video! Also, could you please make a video about tips for mastering topspin because I am struggling with it. Thank you in advance. 🙏
Thank you so much.🙏🏻 Your videos helped me a lot. I'm Monet, 10 year old Thai girl. I'm currently a tennis player in South Canterbury, New Zealand. I like your tennis series and I hope that when I go back to Thailand next year, I will have the chance to practice tennis with you. 🙂
@@MONETGamin-p4c wow, it would be great to meet you when you are back. Keep working hard there and thank you for your support 🙏
Amazing tip, thank you.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed the video
Thank you so much. 🙏🏻
I hope your tennis is going well over there 🙏
Good one Coach, keep coming
Thank you 🙏
You said that penetration is needed and instead of talking about that you changed the subject to top spin and under spin.
I focused on the need for spin and penetration at a higher level of competition and stated that the penetration comes from the "flat" contact, and the spin comes from the "height of the hand" finish. This differs from the "low to high" and "brush the ball" methodologies. Give it a try, and let me know how it goes. Thanks for your comment.
wow great video, thanks for sharing it!!! 90 % metal... It is like that!
@@pantheradmin4804 thanks so much. The sooner we start focusing more on the mental aspects the better 🙏
I would add a fourth factor, in addition to the game plan for the match, the player should have a plan for what to do at times when he feels he is beginning to lose the tennis arm-wrestle.
@@krzysztofjuskiewicz that’s the “monitor your mentality” piece. I’m having success with players by asking them to scrutinize their mindset immediately after a mistake, rather than allow mistakes to build up and lead to mental contamination. Thanks for your input.
Very interesting. Recently some of my pupils asked how I could get my slice backhand to bite much more than theirs. I honestly did not know! It is my most natural stroke. After some analysis we understood that, just like you showed, on my slice backhand I lay my hand flat against the bal and then finish it as a slice. Before I kind of thought it was a fake flat shot! Your idea to do the same for the topspin-strokes is very intriguing! Jerôme @ wheretennis
Good one, also i have to say when i listen to you speak I cant help by see a koala talking to me.
lol
1. Catch the ball 2. Do not punch the ball 3. If need more speed, extend elbow. 4. Placement is the key. Target to open area your opponent can not cover.
Thanks Robert, don’t forget to Lock it Up first 😅
The line, contact foot to head, while hitting the ball. Will try this. Golf swing, leading leg up, similar concept?
@@robertwong-w5s I guessing so Robert. Sounds like the same concept of energy and timing from the ground
Contact foot push up and rise, at the same of contact. Will try this.❤
Creating, and then pushing through a Contact Foot provides inertia for timing and power. Let me know how it goes 🙏
Great video. How does the contact leg, and body positioning change on shoulder height backhands?
@@garrisoncomstock3204 The problem with shoulder height balls is a one of inertia. All power and timing comes from the ground, and the mistake is we neglect “Ground” and try to arm these shots. Stay focused on the ground as your source of power and timing and reduce your swing. Make timing the ball your priority.
@@biggerbettertennis thank you, I focused on keeping weight on my back leg on back hands today and it helped when I connected. Every once of me wanted to reach out and hit the ball early before it got to me but I’m sure I’ll be able to iron that out
Ya. No. The kid in the video is jumping for no reason. One ball was slammed in the net. Let’s see you play. Anyone can make up a simple concept. Context matters.
Stay open minded. There are a lot of people out there that have more experience and know more
“All these things come from the same source and can be learned in a few seconds”. Paul, with all respect, this is complete nonsense. There is no one concept in tennis that will do what you are suggesting. The main part of the acceleration happens when the shoulder clears the hip. The timing is complex and takes years. A brick or your little correction is not a moment of brilliance.
@@sapientbudgie5652the boy in the video left training and proceeded to win an ITF singles title and reach the final of the 2nd week. This week he is in the semifinals (yet to play). We worked on his Contact foot for only 10 days and it has completely changed his GS game. The other boy in the video (11years old) won an U14 singles title this weekend. Stay open minded despite what you have been brought up thinking
@@biggerbettertennis you assume a lot. I am open minded. Those kids won tournaments because of 50 different factors. Not just because you have one contact point correction. Stop giving yourself so much credit this was due to many other factors that nothing to do with you.
Stop being an armchair critic.
I am interested in knowing what the scientific basis is. The video is too short, but very good.
My purpose in this video instruction series is to give coaches new technical, strategic and mental concepts that can help them in their work with advanced players. I apologize that they are quite short but my goal is to deliver the essence of each topic. I appreciate your message. Thank you.
I come to the net and my opponent hits a great lob that I can barely put into the court. I'm inside the court and the ball is above the net but how can it be called the offense?
Here’s how DNO informs the player (1) when you go forward if your ball is too high or you allow your opponent to step over the baseline you are open to be passed or lobbed (2) your opponent has two wishes; that the ball is short or high, to enable him to pass you or lob. If the lob is short, your feet on the overhead will be well inside the baseline. If the lob is deep, your opponent has successfully neutralized you. Thanks so much for a great question 🙏
Excellent, Paul
Thank you. Hope this helps 🙏
Wow so good Paul peach preme

What are some drills to teach fundamentals?
TQ Sir. Very good lesson 🎾👍
Thank you! If you want more information on the DNO Theory let me know
Great video! How does pre-innovation work for older players?
Pre-innovation applies to any player who is looking to improve their court coverage Francis. It covers anticipation and explosiveness which are usually the biggest problems for someone with poor on court movement
Mr Dale, the background music makes it quite harder to hear and follow what you're saying. Thank you very much for the series! 🎾🙏🏻
Thank you for that! I agree, it’s definitely too loud and I’ll make some adjustments
