    Wow, in dozens of different blindruns, I think this is the only one that invoked the same feelings I had when I discovered what to do to reach the ending: The fear of losing my treasured log ships, my blind run save data, the physical testament of what I've learned. I've played the entire base game (except ending) through xCloud playing the game with Game Pass. I had very bad connection, so many of my deaths were caused by stream lag, inputs not responding and sometimes the connection goes so bad that the xCloud session would just close and I have to reconnect to a new session. I feared not that I would lose everything because of skill (I'm quite confident at flying), but because of the external factor of my internet connection. Because of that I stopped playing Outer Wilds before the ending and only like 1-2 months later I finally decided to buy a Series S just to play the ending. That was how stressed I was about losing everything and having to do the ending with my ship log empty, just because of my internet connection. The entire section of "I know what I have to do, but I fear losing everything" was very sentimental to me. Glad to know I was not the only one hahahah. I haven't watched your entire blindrun (just part of this stream thanks to youtube algorithm), but now I'm gonna watch from the beginning and wait for you to play the DLC.

    The katakana for the word Alaya can be translated as Araya.(アラヤ). This is the katakana for Alaya. If you try google searching, most of the results will have the word Araya in it. Alaya gets its name from Yogocara Buddishm. And refers to the type of consciousness that deals in a person’s potential, existential energy. Physically and mentally. This cave of Alaya is where the will of all humans living in the world was born. It’s the sea of consciousness where intention that cannot be seen take clear form. This will manifests as human beings in a fetal position. Holding their knees and floating in space. This actually helps tie in to Philemon. I should start off by mentioning that Philemon is only partially a creation by Atlus Philemon comes from within the mind of Jung Literally In 1913, Jung recalled seeing Philemon in one of his dreams and described his appearance as being that of an old man with the horns of a bull He believed this figure was not something he intentionally produced He believed it was something that had a life of its own and brought itself into existence Philemon represented superior insight to Jung; a sort of spirit guide that taught him about psychological objectivity and the actuality of the soul In Jung’s own words “ There was a blue sky, like the sea, covered not by clouds but by flat brown clods of earth. It looked as if the clouds were breaking apart and the blue water of the sea were becoming visible between them. But the water was the blue sky. Suddenly there appeared from the right a winged being sailing across the sky. I saw that it was an old man with the horns of a bull. He held a bunch of four keys, one of which he clutched as if he were about to open a lock. He had the wings of the kingfisher with its characteristic colors. Since I did not understand this dream-image, I painted it in order to impress it upon my memory. During the days when I was occupied with the painting, I found in my garden, by the lake shore, a dead kingfisher! I was thunderstruck, for kingfishers are quite rare in the vicinity of Zurich(the largest city in Switzerland) and I have never since found a dead one. The body was recently dead-at the most, two or three days-and showed no external injuries. Philemon and other figures of my fantasies brought home to me the crucial insight that there are things in the psyche which I do not produce, but which produce themselves and have their own life. Philemon represented a force which was not myself.” In Persona, his appearance is that of a man with a butterfly mask. What’s underneath the mask is dependent on the person viewing it In P1 he’s meant to resemble a handsome Chinese man in his mid-40s or so. His design plays off of Chinese philosopher Zhuang Zhou/Zhuangzi, the man who came up with the butterfly dream quote which is what you see when you see start a new game Philemon lives on an entirely different plane of existence so he can appear however he wants while he’s in that existing plane. He can also appear in the hearts of people and is adept at quantum mechanics uh whatever that means. Philemon resides in the Alaya Shrine. Human beings have two minds, the consciousness and unconsciousness. It’s often said that the physical world is the conscious world whereas figures such as that Nyarlythotep that possessed Kandori exist in the unconsciousness watching everything and Philemon resides somewhere in-between. That in-between is also where the Velvet Room is located Which is why it’s assumed Philemon created it This is also why the sleep state/near sleep state is associated with the Velvet Room Or traversing to the velvet room Because that’s why your consciousness and unconsciousness meet Let’s move back to Philemon though Philemon plays a similar role in this game to his origins He acts as a spirit guide for our characters and is an ever-present observer. He doesn’t help out the cast in any direct way but he offers the necessary tools such as the ability to use personas and create new ones in the Velvet Room The Velvet Room is the home of Philemon’s servants: Igor, Nameless, and Belladonna Philemon’s ultimate goal isn’t to ensure anyone’s victory But rather he believes in the potential of humanity to overcome any odds He’s pushing the cast towards self-enlightenment And this ties into the series’s grander goal This is something that Jung referred to as the Individualization process When one realizes the self This entire game could be read as a journey to mankind’s true potential By virtue of this game having a silent protagonist which is essentially a stand in for the player this process is left up to us You’re confronted with moral choices throughout the game The correct choices which lead to the game’s true ending can be seen as true to one’s self This all culminates at the end of the game where the protagonist meets his other self. With ATLUS games, the protagonists are self-inserts and silent. You're meant to project yourself onto them, but I think in Persona 1 they manage to characterize him pretty well. I think the P1 Hero is one of the most direct player surrogates in the series and It leans into the themes of the game.e. Even if he doesn’t speak himself the game gives us many clues For one thing the MC has a gambling addiction Often spending his free time idling away. He also doesn’t really study He’s a slacker He doesn’t really seem to care about anything He’s apathetic He doesn’t care about the future This all culminates towards the end of the game where we come face to face with his Shadow He’s depicted absorbed in a video game The Shadow’s personality is influenced by your decisions made throughout the game If you make the wrong decisions you won't get the ultimate personas. In other words you're running away however if you the make the correct decisions it shows the P1 MC hasn't given in to his apathy He won't bury his head in. They use the main character's role as a self-insert to present the player with a personally introspective angle. When the game is speaking to the main character, they're also speaking to YOU Persona 1 is like a mirror held up to the player a good example is at the Lost Forest what determines whether or not you get the true/bad ending is up to the answers you give to Mai A lot of the issues the main character faces regarding his sense of identity is very relatable I'm sure there's lot of people out there who've struggled with being lonely and finding who they really are.

    Persona 1 Spoilers: As you've discovered, the "other world" you've been in all this time was actually a creation of an ideal world created from within Maki's psyche. Maki is at the core of this game's plot. She can be considered the game's "heroine". As you are already aware, however, there is more than one version of her, each one represents a different part of her psyche. The real Maki vanishes from the hospital at the start of the game. We learn later down the line she was taken to a place called the "Sea of Souls", which is buried deep under the shrine in the other world. This area is a literal representation of the Collective Unconscious. Before I continue any further, I must tell you about Jungian psychology, the basis of the entire series. It's also heavily woven into this game's themes. The idea of the Persona and Philemon himself originate from within the mind of Carl Gustav Jung. Carl Jung was a influential psychologist and psychiatrist during the early 20th century. Just like Sigmund Freud who he was formerly partnered with, He had a fascination with the unconscious mind. He introduced the theory of the collective unconscious, The idea that the human psyche was more than a blank slate shaped by its environment. Unlike the personal unconscious which consisted of every thought and memory experienced by the individual, the collective unconscious is shared by all human beings, It’s an ancestral memory containing inherited patterns of behavior. These are known as archetypes. Archetypes are inborn tendencies that shape the human ego. They’re abstract modes of expressions represented in arts, myths, and dreams. To put it into simpler terms, they’re the recognizable roles that are found in all of fiction such as the naive hero who must combat adversity or the wise master who must train him. Jung saw the concept of archetypes as a determining force for behavior that would guarantee some level of similarity in people. There are many different archetypes that are important, but let’s start with the most obvious one: The Persona. The word “Persona” comes from the Roman period. It's used to refer to an actor’s mask that would be worn during a performance. Within Jungian Psychology, the persona is a metaphorical mask worn to hide an individual’s true self. It’s an artificial personality that is assumed when dealing with the world. Examples of this can be found absolutely anywhere. The mannerisms a person uses at work is going to be vastly different than when they’re with friends/family. The purpose behind the persona is to repress socially unacceptable personality traits. Jung wrote that the persona is “…is as its name implies, only a mask of the collective psyche, a mask that feigns individuality, making others and oneself believe that one is individual, whereas one is simply acting a role through which the collective psyche speaks…” “Fundamentally the persona is nothing real; it is as compromise between individual and society as to what a man should appear to be…” ~Carl G. Jung Now this raises an important question, "Who are we really?" Which of these personas are closest to our true self if any of them at all? If the persona is a role placed on us by society and ourselves, its authenticity is highly questionable. So what is the true self operating behind this mask? Jung believed that it was something at the very center of the psyche beyond the realms of consciousness. This is one of the many archetypes and is the unification of the consciousness and unconsciousness, the Self. The realization of the self is the ultimate self discovery. Only after having a larger understanding of their persona, shadow, and ego can a person truly come to realize the self. A much richer and complete image of themselves. The entire plot of this game can be read as a journey to mankind’s true potential and by extension the self. The persona power in this game is very similar to the archetype of the same name only it’s a real supernatural force. Overcoming different situations requires use of multiple personas. The player will need to make regular visits to the Velvet Room to create new ones. Each persona differs in strengths, weaknesses,stats, and skills. It’s a parallel to the personas these characters use in their everyday lives, and this couldn’t be more appropriate for high school students. Everyone knows what high school is like, and those who attend high school are typically adolescents. It’s during this timeframe when both heart and body are unstable that it makes teenagers extremely easy targets for demons and schools the ideal environment to unleash their power. Teenagers are still discovering themselves and trying to find their place in the world. The team wanted to create an emotionally approachable game. One that players can relate to. They wanted it to be a game anyone can pick up and enjoy, From kids still in school to adults who wanted to go back to that time and reminiscence. They would make a more distinct, memorable cast to ease players into it. One of Persona’s themes is “adolescence”. The confusion one feels during that time, the different values and views people can have, growing up and coming of age. The team wanted to reach players on a emotional level. The story takes place in normal, everyday modern life, and then there’s an incident that is the start of everything. The vicinity surrounding the high school is closed off by something, and the characters have to try and solve this mystery as the story unfolds. This is the story the team wanted to tell. Anyway though, The power of Persona is the ability to call upon archetypes from the Collective Unconscious. This is why they’re represented by demons, gods, and other mythological figures. While it is true that this originates from previous Megami Tensei games, their inclusion here carries a different meaning. Each of these personas represents an archetypal story. The characters aren’t actually summoning real gods and demons as awesome as that would be. What is being summoned is their collective meaning to humanity. Mythology and psychology are closely tied and this has been the focus of much of Jung’s writings. He argued that all of the world’s mythologies are a projection of the collective unconscious and its archetypes. For example the Norse god Loki who can be summoned in the game is an expression of the trickster archetype. The trickster is devious and breaks rules and conventions. They rebel against authority and are often in equal measures intelligent as they are deceitful. There are many other expressions of the trickster in mythology and this is just one archetype Mythological tales may follow gods as their protagonists but they were written by people and are expressions of human nature. Up until now I’ve been talking about the personas that our human cast can summon but this also applies to most of the enemies they encounter as well. They too originate from the collective unconscious from within the game’s universe. The reason will become clear as you progress. This also explains the appearance of fictional characters in Persona such as the numerous Lovecraftian monsters. We'll discuss the other Jungian stuff later but let's return to Maki.

      The Real Maki can be found in the Sea of Souls, voicing her nihilistic beliefs that gave birth to Pandora. She wishes that she was never born and simply wants to do nothing but waste away. The Ideal Maki pleads with her to change her mind, pointing to her friends as examples for why she’s wrong. They’ve been through a lot but they never gave up. So who is the ideal Maki? She was created to represent the very best qualities of herself for her perfect world. None of her negative traits would’ve been needed in this case. If this is sounding familiar well it should because it’s very close to the persona’s purpose. The Ideal Maki could be seen as a personification of the persona. To reiterate, the persona is the mask we wear when dealing with the world. But why do we wear that mask? Well to repress the shadow Which brings us to the main conflict in the plot The mischievous girl in black Aki Both she and Pandora represent Maki’s shadow archetype I touched on the idea of the shadow earlier but here it requires further explaining The shadow is the opposite of the persona in that it is the repressed parts of the personality deemed unsuitable for the persona. These personality traits, often extremely negative in nature, are pushed to the subconscious out of sight. The more the shadow is ignored or rejected the more influence it’ll exert over our thoughts and emotions. Jung put it best when he said, “That which we do not bring to consciousness appears in our lives as fate.” It’s only by becoming aware of this part of ourselves that we are able to overcome its destructive influence. It’s one of the many obstacles on the journey to realizing the Self. Its usage here in the form of Aki is to illustrate this psychological struggle. Maki’s ideal world ignored all of her negative aspects but in the process gave them much more influence over the world and by extension her own psyche This is why the world is split into two parts when being explored by the player. One side is almost identical to the real Mikage-Cho and the other side is shrouded in darkness and is filled with Aki’s traps Aki is also responsible for bringing all the demons to this world and the real one as if they were an invading army. It’s a literal battle of the psyche Next we have Mai After thinking about it a bit I couldn’t nail down how Mai fits in Jung’s model of the psyche And it’s possibly because she isn’t from jungian psychology. Mai seems to better fit in the Freudian model of the psyche Sigmund Freud used to work with Jung and as I mentioned before had a fascination with the unconscious mind His model of the psyche has three distinct aspects The Id, the ego, and the superego Aki is definitely the Id The id is instinctual and only seeks pleasure It’s considered the most primitive and irrational part of the personality It has no regard for the real world consequences of its desires. The Id develops around the time of childbirth which explains Aki’s childlike appearance An infant has only one thing on its mind The immediate gratification of its wants, desires, and needs Ok now let’s move on to the ego The ego is much more realistic in its desires as it is the part of the personality that is shaped by the external world The ego seeks pleasure but unlike the Id it takes the consequences of its actions into account This is the role of the ideal Maki The Superego is the moral aspect of the personality Its main purpose is to suppress the selfish instinct of the Id and the pragmatism of the ego The ego has no sense of what is right or wrong Something is good simply if it achieves its end of satisfying without causing harm to itself or the Id The superego strives for moral purity Even if it means putting oneself in harm’s way Mai definitely fits this role The superego also develops around childbirth which would explain Mai’s childlike appearance With this We’ve figured out how everyone fits But now we have two interpretations of Maki and Aki One that fits into the jungian model and one that fits into the Freudian model They don’t contradict each other so there’s room for interpretation You know about those old cartoons that would have angelic and devilish versions of the character right beside them And it’s the person weighing their options and trying to figure out what is right or wrong well this is kinda the same case lol There's another aspect of the game that ties into Maki, the original World Map. As I mentioned before, when you first step out onto the field, it's divided into two halves. Visually, it's meant to represent Maki's internal struggle, but there's another point I've been remiss on, the way the world map. It's very blocky. You might think it looks like that because of the PS1 but it's meant to be the perfect visual parallel. In order to figure that out, we need to go back to the beginning. Let's take a look at the opening. Now if you go to the end, You’ll see a panning shot of the school turning into building blocks. Now don’t they resemble the blocks on the overworld? It’s all meant to foreshadow Maki’s creation of an ideal city from within her psyche, which comes into existence due to the Deva System. It's pretty neat they took advantage of the rudementary 3D polygons the original Playstation was known for producing and turn it into pretty sick foreshadowing.

    Good job getting through this hellish dungeon. At least the music is nice Fun Fact: The word “Kama” refers to the concept of desire. We all derive pleasure from enjoyment in various things in life. The original composition sounding like disco music is wholly intentional. Kama is Sanskrit for “desire” or “wish” or “pleasure”. It's SUPPOSED to be music you can dance to.

    The lack of save points was actually a criticism towards the game when it initially released. It made it hard for people who had to work on the weekdays to sit down and play the game. For Persona 2, they added the ability to save anywhere. According to Kazuma Kaneko(he was the art director for Persona 1. He did the character, demon, and persona designs), he said it was done as a way of subverting the normal RPG stuff. In a regular RPG, if you saw a save point you’d automatically assume there was a boss room located nearby and that takes away all the tension and thrill. That’s why the save points were structured the way they were. For why the battles take so long, It's because ATLUS wanted the players to enjoy the battles visually. Battles aren't just about gaining EXP, the battles can be considered Event Scenes. There's a lot to appreciate such as contacting with demons and the variety of different animations. They even thought about including animation cutscenes mid-battle but they knew people would really complain about the length so it never went further. For Persona 2, they made sure to increase the tempo of the battle speed. If you'd like to know more about Persona's development, I'd recommend checking out this interview: shmuplations.com/persona/

    You've arrived at the truth... Persona 1 Spoilers(not for you but for those who haven't played this game) Kandori is someone who is super ambitious and a need to see himself at the top. He is prideful and arrogant but deep down he is someone who is struggling with himself. He is suffering from nihilism and has caused himself an identity crisis. However, rather than asking for help like a normal person, he is too prideful and arrogant to do such a thing. After all, why would a young and successful branch president have any reason to be discontent? He’s an immature, selfish control freak who’s projecting his own anxieties and nihilistic tendencies onto the rest of humanity rather than being some jaded ultra scientist who grew a god complex from studying humanity. Kandori is only 28. Due to being relatively young, he chooses to fault the world around him rather than taking responsibility for himself. He believes that the only way to find the meaning to his existence is to rule over humanity. When Kandori became the president of the Mikage-cho SEBEC branch, he would use it for his pet project, the Deva System. This reality warping machine would ensure Kandori's rise to godhood. He even constructed an entire castle in his own image, Deva Yuga. Deva is Sanskrit for “deity/god”. Yuga references the four-age cycle in Hinduism. The first age, Satya Yuga, is commonly referred to as Deva Yuga. Kandori wanted to become a god and bring about a new age of humanity through the Deva system which explains the name. To put it another way he wished to start a new cycle which starts with the deity ruling golden age. Deva Yuga is a physical manifestation of Kandori's machinations. However, even though Kandori's goal has been granted, he still finds himself unfulfilled by this and questions why he even lives. He still finds himself faced with despair and the desire for death. He spent all this time for this singular goal only to have nothing to show for it. Just like our main cast, Kandori has his own journey of self-reflection and reconciliation throughout the game. There are moments where he lets his guard down and you can see a bit of his true self such as the confrontation at Deva Yuga. Kandori knew that the others were coming after him. Aki had the power to take them down, yet Kandori sent her away. Why? Kandori didn't want Aki and by extension, Maki, to end up like her, but he also wanted to hear the others' answer. "Boy… I allowed you to come here in order to ask you this: Why do you cling to life?" At this point, Kandori is so far gone and empty that he's desperate for any of kind of meaning to his life. Kandori wasn't even planning on fighting the others until Nanjo goaded him into doing so. Kandori says his retaliation is punishment for speaking against God, but the next thing he says is very interesting. "Can you defeat me? Can you protect the things you claim are precious? Then prove it before god’s throne!" This hints that his true reason for fighting isn’t to preserve his ego, but he wants to see what a person can accomplish if they have meaning in life. However, his mind so jumbled and his logic is contradictory that he can’t seem to decide what he wants. He does still have his god complex, and as such, still believes that he can win the battle. When he is faced with the truth, though he is shocked that he lost to a bunch of high school kids "Ngh… I refuse to accept this! I’m supposed to have transcended man!" However, despite what he says, he is ready to admit defeat. Until Nyarlathotep directly intervenes. Kandori says that something is forcing itself into him, and Nyarlathotep responds by saying “I shall give you the power you desire.” Kandori pleads with Nyarlathotep to stop, but is ignored. When Kandori is taken over by Nyarlathotep, his God Kandori form resembles that of a Buddha. A Buddha is one who has achieved enlightenment, symbolizing how Kandori has achieved his goal of becoming a god and transcending humanity. If Kandori truly wanted to win the battle, he wouldn’t have refused Nyarlathotep’s help. However, it’s clear that Kandori was ready to concede to you, despite his initial denial. Another time in the game that points to Kandori’s true feelings is when he summons Saurva to fight the group before leaving for Deva Yuga. "Objects of one’s desire cannot be easily obtained. But the joy of overcoming obstacles to obtaining them is the highest bliss." This is very interesting because he admits that achieving your dream isn’t what makes people happy, but the greatest satisfaction occurs when you overcome the obstacles in your path to your dream. Because he views himself as God, he’s not saying this as a piece of advice to the youth. He’s stating this as an absolute fact of life. This is something he truly believes in, and also believes that other people should accept as well. In some sense, it feels like he’s trying to do them a favor in some twisted way. Of course, by summoning Saurva, there’s a chance that you would die, but remember, Kandori initially had no intention to fight you. Kandori allowed youto reach him in order to ask what he was living for. By giving you the satisfaction of defeating Saurva, it felt like Kandori wanted to give you and your friends a sense of happiness and feeling of accomplishment. Some other things that give way to Kandori's true nature are the music. Kandori has three themes, his Silence theme, his Pathos theme, and his Ambition theme. I'll only be talking about his silence and pathos theme since those are the ones that are really important. Silence - th-cam.com/video/1o9rJrV5-4w/w-d-xo.html This song is very confident and prideful and foreboding. Whoever this theme belongs to must be quite the arrogant man. However, you can hear the bass guitar plucking out the main theme of the game, subtly hinting that there's more to Kandori than what he lets on Pathos - th-cam.com/video/4N26gL3zNUM/w-d-xo.html Pathos is a quality that evokes pity or sadness. This theme is when Kandori takes his metaphorical mask off and reveals his true nature. He's more emotional now When you were exploring the dungeon, you could hear random English samples. These voices are actually from Kandori and Maki. Their thoughts are being projected because of the Deva system. They're talking with each other about the meaning of their existence. There was actually an arrangement of the Deva Yuga theme that has proper English lyrics: th-cam.com/video/4cvegmC2PRM/w-d-xo.html but my point is Kandori hints at times he doesn’t totally buy into the authoritarian god complex he touts. He’s very insecure, and has doubts about the path he’s chosen. When he's eventually defeated, he lays there, all alone. Only when he's at death's door does he realize the error of his ways. He tries to point the others towards Maki's location. "Maki Sonomura… she needs to discover her true self. If she doesn’t, she’ll share my fate… Go to her… Don’t let her go down that lonely path." At this point, Kandori is literally dying. He doesn’t have to care about anything, but he uses his last breaths to ask for Maki to be saved. He knows his life is miserable, and doesn’t want her to experience the same thing. I think this shows Kandori's growth that doesn't want others to reap the same fate as him. I want to stress that I’m not claiming Kandori is an innocent person. He was a shady businessman who ran the Mikage-cho branch like a mafia and almost got Maki's mother killed. Still though, you can't help but feel sorry for him. He probably wanted to change yet did not have the willpower to do so. Overall, Nanjo said it best- Kandori is a very pitiful man.

    I just recently discovered your channel, but it's nice to see someone playing through the older Persona games, especially Persona 1. I also see you're playing the original PS1 release. I've always preferred that version over PSP because of the atmosphere and immersion. Anyway though, this game can be somewhat difficult to get into, so allow me to recommend some tips -This game isn't really that hard, so don't worry too much about managing your personas, but you will need to change them during the endgame. This also applies to your equipment. You don't really need to update them that much, but don't feel afraid to update them when you want to -This game is not that long(Each Route is around 20-30 hours long) so feel free to not rush through it all. In fact, I highly encourage talking to NPCs and your party members whenever you get the chance. Persona 1 is that type of game where it rewards you for engaging with its world. While there are still main story events, you're meant to piece together clues and information you gather to form conclusions about the game's story. A lot more is abstract and left up to player interpretation. With these tips in mind, I hope you can enjoy the game.

      Ooh thanks for commenting! I've really been enjoying the game yeah, and I'm just lucky enough that I have the ability to play the original PS1 version hahaha, it took me years to get to this point. Been wanting to play it for years so I'm glad it hasn't disappointed. Seems like the people who like this game REALLY like it too, judging by you and a few other new people who've dropped by to my streams, so that's encouraging. For what it's worth, I'll probably be continuing in a few hours, if you'd be interested to come by while I'm live!

      @@MBgov1133 Tbh I would say it's pretty underrated, moreso in the West. It's pretty beloved in Japan to the point where it was ported to the Playstation Classic. Since you're very fluent in Japanese, I honestly would've recommended that version. You can speed up the battles in that version.

      @@OldEnemy1 Haha as much as I'd appreciate speed-up, I generally feel like using speed-up in a game that didn't officially support it to begin with feels a little disingenuous to the experience for me. I'd feel like I can't critique the game on its own merits, it's a little weird

      @@MBgov1133 Honestly fair. If I remember correctly, I believe Japanese fans complained about the sluggish battle system at the time and they upped the battle speed for Persona 2. At least the animations look nice and the sound effects are nice to hear

    • @OldEnemy1
      @OldEnemy1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also if you’re interested in the differences between the PS1 and PSP versions then -Battles in general are much faster. You even have the option to turn off animations if you wish -Dungeon Exploration has also been massively sped up. In the original release, your character just walked through corridors. Now he moves at the speed of light and you can even dash for greater effect -The Dungeon themselves have had minor changes in places. Certain areas have been changed; sometimes drastically. They didn’t introduce any new gimmicks or anything. They just rearranged things a little. -Added more stores, Velvet Rooms, and save points in dungeons. To put things into perspective, the final dungeon had one single save point, and it’s placed near the entrance. In the PSP version, you can save roughly 2/3rds of the way in instead of right at the start. The extra save points were only added to the SEBEC Route btw. The Snow Queen Quest still retains its trademark endurance dungeons -Game now informs you when your persona ranks up and/or has new skills -You can now actually see your Persona affinity(In the original game, you just had to guess. The only affinity the game actually told you about was the Worst Affinity, which prevents you from equipping the Persona at all. Now you no longer have to worry about which Persona to fuse.) -The game will automatically reload your formation after an ambush. You don’t have to do it manually -The Auto-Battle Menu now has more options to play around with. You can choose to have your party members replay their last selected action, or do it with just guns or melee weapons. You can even select each individual’s party member's actions for them to replay. -Stores now tell you which person can equip this piece of equipment, accessory, or weapon. In the original version, you just had to guess -Adds Traesto(which teleports you to start of a dungeon) and Estoma(which reduces the encounter rate) -The FMVs from the original have been completely remade. They even added in some new ones that just weren’t possible in the original game. These new FMVs also include voice acting and not for just Philemon anymore. Outside of characters’ battle quotes, Philemon was the only one who spoke. Now everyone speaks, at least in the overseas release. In the Japanese PSP version, it’s just subtitles and silence. This was because of Japan’s strict nature to not recast. The original voice cast either left the industry/passed away, and ATLUS wanted to respect that. They also added a difficulty selection: Beginner, Normal, and Expert. The original didn’t have this at all. Depending on the difficulty chosen, it will affect how much damage enemies will deal to you. Beginner decreases enemy damage by 20% while Expert increases enemy damage by 20%. Normal is ordinary level. -Higher resolution and wider aspect ratio(battles and cutscenes have been zoomed out slightly because of it meaning there’s now more of that empty space that leads to the abstract void) -New floors have been added to the game's grinding dungeons, the Mikage Ruins and Devil's Peak(This is the SQQ one) You unlock these new floors by getting either the true or bad ending in each respective route although strangely there's no New Game+ despite having reasons to replay the game. -The range of all attacks and skills are now openly displayed in-battle -Buffs and debuffs can now only stack up to 2 uses. In the original, buffs and debuffs could stack up to 7 and 4 times, respectively Now let's talk about the more...controversial changes -World Map has been simplified and is basically just a PNG now. This was likely done for ease of use and the 3D blocky world map would look awkward on the screen of the PSP. There are some who don't mind this change and others who do(I'm one of the latter), I don't want to spoil, but the original world map really leans into the theming of the game. That's all I'll say -Menus and UI were completely redone, taking advantage of the game's 16:9 aspect ratio. Some consider the new menus to be very bland and boring, which I guess is understandable. The original ones were charming and had that 90s coolness to them. I also like the fact that they let you change its background in the options menu. The fact that they took this out of the PSP version is a bit disappointing. There's also the fact the PSP battle menus animate a bit slower compared to PS1's though it's not as bad as the PSP menus for Innocent Sin. -A lot of sound effects were either removed or homogenized. When you're selecting actions for your party members, there's a special sound effect for confirming, canceling, and even moving in general. In PSP, it's all just one SFX. This applies to other menus such as the Velvet Room and stores. There was an entire sound effect for when you summoned a Persona. When exploring dungeons, in addition to the regular background music, you can hear the sound of other stuff. When you visit the hospital to see Maki, you can hear people talking and babies talking, which isn't unusual for a hospital. When exploring the subway, you can hear wind. There's also stuff like the footstep SFX which is meant simulate the sound of movement. All of this is pretty much gone in the PSP version. This isn't even addressing the biggest change between each version, the new music -The original soundtrack was replaced with a newer one more in line with that of Persona 3 & 4. This was done in an attempt to appeal to those fans. Safe to say, Japanese fans weren't very happy with the new music(They also were mad about the lack of SFX I mentioned before) For the Persona 2 Remasters, they left the original music intact, remixed it, and gave the option to switch between the original and remixed tunes.
