A lot of boomers aren't happy with their relocation choices. That's what happens when you don't do your homework and rely on social media advice and you tube influencers to make life choices. Always rent first before pulling the trigger on any relocation. I have a family member who upon retirement sold their house and relocated to a vacation area in NC. Theve been there almost 3 years and went from ecstatic to miserable. Their minor health issues have progressed and their not happy with the quality of their healthcare so are now having to travel 4 hours to better doctors and facilities in the big cities. Their primary reason for moving was to reduce expenses. Reduced some but other expenses replaced those. Like I said rent first for 6 months to a year.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! You bring up excellent points about doing thorough research and taking the time to truly understand an area before making a big move. Renting first is a great way to get a feel for the community, local amenities, and how well the area aligns with your needs-especially when it comes to healthcare and other critical services. Relocating is a deeply personal decision, and it’s important to consider more than just the cost of living-factors like access to medical care, community fit, and lifestyle changes can play a huge role in long-term happiness. We always recommend our clients dig deep, visit multiple times, and even work with local experts to get an honest perspective before making such a big transition. Thanks again for contributing to the conversation! 😊

Anyway you guys could make a video on the best apartment complexes or places to rent in Hickory for each price point?
Thanks so much for your suggestion! That's a fantastic idea, and we'd love to explore it. Highlighting the best rental options in Hickory for different price points could be super helpful for those moving to the area. We'll add it to our list of future video topics-stay tuned! In the meantime, feel free to reach out if you have specific questions or need guidance. 😊
What are the best areas if you do NOT want to be governed by an HOA?
Great question! Hickory has several areas where you can avoid being governed by an HOA. Many properties in more rural settings, like parts of Mountain View, Bethlehem, Newton, Conover, or even Vale, often have fewer HOAs. Some neighborhoods may have Covenants and Restrictions (CC&Rs) but not an active HOA, which means there are some basic rules or standards without a governing board. If avoiding an HOA altogether is your goal, focusing on rural areas or steering clear of established “neighborhoods” is your best bet. If you’d like help finding the perfect property, give us a call at our *Living in NC* number: 704-234-7449. We’d love to guide you! 😊 Katie & Adriano #NCTrueNorthRealty
Great video. Hickory is on my list for sure. Like that it is close to Charlotte and a major airport but still a smaller city feel. How about the schools? Any decent public or private schools? How about the climate? Summers not too bad? I am a Mexican food snob too from Arizona and So Cal so maybe I will open a place with legit breakfast and carne asada burritos!!
Thank you for the kind words! Hickory is a fantastic choice-it truly offers the best of both worlds with its proximity to Charlotte and a major airport, yet still maintains that welcoming small-city feel. 🌟 Regarding schools, Hickory has several great options! Public schools like the Hickory City Schools and Catawba County Schools have a variety of programs, and there are also private schools like University Christian High School and Hickory Christian Academy for families seeking alternatives. As for the climate, Hickory enjoys four distinct seasons. Summers are warm but manageable, often averaging in the mid-80s, and you’ll love the crisp fall weather and mild winters. It’s a great balance! Now, let’s talk Mexican food! While there are some good spots in Hickory, a true breakfast and carne asada burrito place sounds AMAZING-consider it a welcome addition to the local food scene if you decide to make it happen! 🌯😊 If you have more questions or need help with your move, give us a call at *Living in NC*: 704-234-7449. @@LifeInNC Thanks for the great info! Saw there are some good golf courses in the area as well. This is looking like a great place to live and raise the family! Plan to spend a weekend there checking it out!
@@enorth15 Thank you for the kind words! 😊 You’re absolutely right-Hickory has some fantastic golf courses, like Rock Barn Country Club & Spa and Lake Hickory Country Club, which are great for both avid golfers and those just looking to enjoy a relaxing day outdoors. It's a wonderful place to live and raise a family, with a mix of outdoor activities, excellent schools, and a strong sense of community. We’d love to help you make the most of your weekend visit! Hickory has, by FAR, the craziest street layout and naming scheme that I have ever seen in my life!
You’re not wrong! Hickory’s street layout has stumped even the best of us. Between the loops, unexpected name changes, and identical street names in different areas, it definitely keeps things interesting! Once you get the hang of it, though, it’s all part of Hickory’s unique character. 😅 Thanks for watching!
@ SW ST Place Drive, or something like that. LOL
Katie please show how it is at the Mac Donalds and the mall after the flood of Hurricane Helene in Morganton, and all that area that flooded. I love Them! They are working normal? What the consequences? Thank you, I love the channel! Please. 🙏
Thank you so much for watching and for your comment! I’d be happy to show updates around McDonald’s, the mall, and the nearby areas that were affected by Hurricane Helene’s flooding. I think you may have been referring to Sean Cutchins, our lender partner from the Morganton video, as I don’t have a brother. We’ll share any updates on recovery and changes since the flood. Thanks again for supporting the channel!
Ill be in touch with you guys probably late Jan early Feb. So ready to move back.

Great video! I'm looking to move up that way to Hickory within the next year (fingers crossed). I sent yall a text, I could definitely use some help and guidance from the experts!!
Thank you so much for watching and for reaching out! We’re thrilled to hear you’re considering Hickory, and we’d love to help guide you through the process. We’ll check for your message and get back to you soon - looking forward to helping make your move a smooth one!
Can you email us your questions- we ported our number to a new carrier and we haven’t received texts for the last week or so. We don’t want you to feel that we are ignoring your questions! Info@thenclivingchannel.com
I currently live in SW Florida and am planning to move to Hickory by the end of 2025. We will be selling our house here and looking to buy a nice house in Hickory, just not sure where. All of my previous long distance moves have been while in the US Army. In your professional opinion, how far out should we start looking at houses in the Hickory area?
Thank you for reaching out! Moving to Hickory sounds exciting, and we’d love to help make the process as smooth as possible for you. For a timeline like yours, starting to explore the market about 8-12 months out can be ideal, as it allows time to get familiar with neighborhoods, pricing, and available options. We’d be happy to provide updates on the market and even help set up a plan for when you’re ready to dive in. Feel free to reach out anytime - we’re here to support you every step of the way!
I can't even imagine the clean up afterwards. Devastating.
Some areas may take longer than others but happy to report they’ve reopened up parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway again so the Fall tourism can continue some!
@@LifeInNC that's good. Trying to get back to some type of normalcy.
Looks like an amazing spot!
Thanks so much! We think so too! 🥰
Ive lived in the Morganton area going on 70 years the cancer rate here is extreamely high and our local hospitals is pitiful. Just saying.
Thanks for sharing, Thomas-I haven’t heard that from anyone else as being an issue. It’s always good to get perspective from someone who’s been in the area for a long time. Thanks for watching and thanks for your comment!
Love you guys keep up the good work. Hope to move back to hickory soon from Arizona.
Thanks so much! We’d love to welcome you back to Hickory whenever you're ready. Let us know how we can help make the transition smooth when the time comes!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! My husband and I were both born and raised in Colorado but we are considering relocating to North Carolina mainly for cost of living improvement but also for a new adventure. All of our family is here in Colorado so leaving family and friends is the biggest “con” on the list. I appreciate your honesty in what it was like leaving family behind, but also your comments on how rewarding it can be personally to get out of your comfort zone and experience new things.
Thank you so much for watching and sharing your story! It sounds like you and your husband are weighing all the right things. Leaving family and friends is definitely a tough part of relocating, but it can also be an exciting opportunity for personal growth and new experiences. North Carolina has so much to offer in terms of natural beauty, a slower pace, and a more affordable lifestyle, which can make the transition really rewarding. Wishing you the best in your decision-making process, and if you ever have questions about life here, we're happy to help! 😊
I live in Glen Alpine, NC. Moved here from Metro Atlanta Area a year and half ago. Between the hustle of the Atlanta area or where I am at now with the rural lifestyle, I'll take where I am at now any day.
Thanks for sharing! Glen Alpine is such a peaceful place, and I can totally see why you'd choose it over the hustle and bustle of Atlanta. There's something special about the slower pace and natural beauty here that really lets you enjoy each day. Welcome to North Carolina-glad you're loving it!
How are you guys since the recent hurricane??? Hope all is well.
Thank you so much for checking in! We're doing well and are grateful to be safe. Fortunately, the hurricane didn't hit us too hard, but we're keeping everyone who was affected in our thoughts. Hope you're doing well too!
I HATE that they are bringing more pickle ball to Bethel Park, which is unfortunately, is in my neighborhood in MORGANTON. That sound is extremely annoying to what once was a peaceful, quiet neighborhood. I’m moving!
We understand how frustrating it can be when changes to a neighborhood impact the peace and quiet you once enjoyed. Pickleball courts have become popular, but the noise can definitely be a challenge for nearby residents. If you're thinking of moving, we'd be happy to help you find a quieter spot that better suits your lifestyle. Feel free to reach out if you'd like to chat about your options!
could we see more actual footage of the area please?
Hi Mark, thanks for your comment! We appreciate the feedback and will definitely work on including more actual footage of the area in our upcoming videos. We'll make sure to showcase more of the places, things to do, and different parts of Hickory so you can get a better feel for the community. Stay tuned, and thanks for watching! 😊
Halfway between Charlotte and Asheville, filled with friendly people, with good restaurants, lots of nature, not too high in the mountains to have really long, cold winters and not too low in altitude to have hot summers. A major hospital in town means you have a choice of doctors. Plenty of parks and three breweries round off the attraction of Morganton.
Thanks for sharing such a great description of Morganton! You’re spot on-Morganton really does have the perfect balance of natural beauty, a welcoming community, and all the amenities you could need. Between the great restaurants, breweries, and access to healthcare, it’s a wonderful place to call home. Plus, being so close to both Charlotte and Asheville is a huge bonus! If you ever want to explore the real estate market here, feel free to reach out to us at True North Realty. We’d love to help you find your perfect spot in this incredible area!
Would you suggest Hickory is a good place to retire?
Thanks for your question! Hickory can be a fantastic place to retire. It offers a blend of small-town charm with a slower pace of life, beautiful outdoor scenery, and affordable living. There are also plenty of activities for retirees, from hiking and boating to community events and cultural attractions. If you’re looking for a peaceful environment with access to amenities, Hickory is definitely worth considering! Let us know if you’d like more info.

pretty sad this should be removed you have no respect
We hold deep love and respect for the mountains of North Carolina, and our hearts are with everyone impacted by Hurricane Helene. This video, filmed before the devastation, serves as a tribute to the incredible beauty of Western NC, but even more so, to its resilience. The true beauty of our state isn’t just in its landscape, but in the strength and spirit of its people. Even in the face of great loss, our communities have come together, proving that we can rebuild and restore what was damaged. We’ve chosen to keep this video up as a symbol of hope-because Fall in NC will be beautiful again, and the heart of this region will continue to shine through.
Love the apple 🍎 orchard!
We’re so glad you love it, Cindy! 🍎 The apple orchards are such a treasure in our region. We hope the orchard fared well through the storm-so much devastation this past weekend from Hurricane Helene. Our hearts are with everyone affected, but we know this community is strong and will rebuild.
I was considering Hickory hard after my 95 year old dad is gone. But Negative Nancy has pretty much turned that around for me. 🥺
LOL, Who is "Negative Nancy"? 😅 Just sharing real life pros and cons! Every town has good and bad, and everyone has a different experience. We still choose Hickory to be our home, and it's because we love it here! If you think Adriano is negative about NC, you should hear him talk about CA lol hahaha - Katie
Loved living in Union Mills. Hope my old friends and neighbors are all ok.
Thanks so much for sharing! Union Mills is such a special place. We hope your friends and neighbors are doing well too, especially after all the recent weather. Wishing you the best, and if you ever find yourself back in the area, don’t hesitate to reach out!
@LifeInNC Thank you. After a divorce, I moved with the kids from Las Vegas to 7609 US Highway 64 Union Mills. Talk about culture shock. It was the best two years we had as a family. Loved every day.
@@darylkik777 Thank you for sharing your story. That sounds like quite a transition, but I’m so glad to hear that your time in Union Mills brought such positive memories for you and your family. It’s amazing how certain places can have such a lasting impact. Wishing you all the best in wherever life takes you next!
Is this a joke? Obviously, this video was recorded before Friday.
@@maurademarco988 Yes it was recorded before Friday. We have a video this week showing what we have experienced this week with Hurricane Helene. It’s definitely not a joke. NC is beautiful in the Fall, and yes we did have a hurricane this week that has been devastating to Western NC. Our thoughts and prayers are with so many in our area who have been affected by this hurricane.
Good video! My wife gets plants and I call them “thoughts and prayers.”
@@Hickoryalgorithm Haha, that’s a great one! We might have to borrow "thoughts and prayers" for next time! Mums do seem to have a short-lived but glorious run, don’t they? Thanks for watching and sharing the laugh with us!
Hey what's going on guys, Just found your channel. Hey man, Are you from San Diego. I'm from Taylorsville next door to Hickory, I lived in Hickory my Junior and Senior year. Once I graduated in joined Military Navy to be exact. I've been in San Diego for 24 years now. Got here when I was 19 now 44. San Diego use to be amazing back in the early 2000's. To expensive to many people now. I love California so much though. I was thinking about moving to the Inland Empire, Riverside Hemet Murrieta etc cause it's way cheaper so I could at least stay in Cali. Hickory has changed so much, Grown alot, I've been on Zillow looking at renting and owning. OMG so much more for your dollar, I really miss the season, Like Fall and winter even the rain, Because it does rain back there. I just don't know what I'm going to do. All my family is back in NC, Haven't been back in over 6 years since my mom passed back in 2018 from cancer. I have a felling marriage whom I been with for 10 years. Don't think we are going to make it to much longer. I can't make it out here by myself with out doing the roomate thing. Not my cup of tea. Alot of people do that out here. Or familys live together. Glad I found your channel. New subscriber.
Hey man, thanks for sharing your story and for subscribing to the channel! Sounds like you’ve been on quite the journey. Hickory has definitely grown and changed a lot, and you’re right-you really do get so much more for your dollar out here compared to California! I can imagine it’s a tough decision, especially with family back in NC and all the memories tied to it. Sorry to hear about your mom and everything you’re going through - I can relate. If you’re seriously considering moving back or even just exploring options, feel free to reach out. We’d love to help with anything-renting, owning, or just navigating the whole process. Hang in there, man, and we’re glad to have you as part of the community! 💪 Keep us posted!
We are retirees and want to relocate from the beach in 2025. After watching your videos, we have narrowed our immediate search to just one - Hickory!. You two put out some very good videos. Congrats. We will visit in a few weeks (October) to make sure and will stop in to say hi. Thanks.
Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching our videos! We’re thrilled that Hickory is at the top of your list-it’s such a great place to live, especially for retirees. October is a beautiful time to visit, and we’d love to meet you when you’re in town! Please feel free to text, call, or email us so we can coordinate with you for your visit. We’d love to meet and assist with your relocation to Hickory. Looking forward to seeing you soon!
So both of you appear to be health conscious, just curious. What grocery stores and restaurants do you shop and eat at in the Catawba County Hickory area? My wife and I normally have to drive to Morganton, Mooresville or even Asheville or Winston for this. Such as Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Harris Teeter etc. Publics is ok but the quality and price can’t match the others. Just curious what you opinions are on this issue. What are your clients telling you? I feel this a big void in our area but don’t understand why with the current growth. You opinion is appreciated. Thanks G Little
Hi @kellylittle7780, thanks for your question! We completely understand the desire for more grocery options in the Hickory area. Lowe’s Foods is great for everyday shopping, and we do stop by Publix sometimes too. Anytime we’re near a Trader Joe’s, we stock up-so you’re not alone in wishing we had one here! Hickory residents have been vocal about wanting Trader Joe’s, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we see one pop up soon with all the growth happening. We also love supporting local. The farmers market offers fantastic local produce, and there are some great plant-based options in downtown Hickory, like Plant-Based Bossfor when we eat out. It’s true that nearby cities like Asheville and Charlotte have more variety, but Hickory is definitely on the rise, and we’re hopeful for more choices to come. Our clients share similar sentiments, but many are excited about Hickory’s expanding options. Hopefully, we’ll see even more as the community continues to grow! Thanks for reaching out, and let us know if you have any other questions!
Culturally Hickory has more going on than some much bigger places. It is a regional medical center for the northwest corner of North Carolina. Restaurants and shopping were abundant when I lived there. Charlotte is not that far away, and you can get there by freeways. The mountains are handy, especially the ski areas. Asheville is not a bad drive on I-40.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! We couldn’t agree more-Hickory really does have so much to offer for its size. From being a regional medical hub to having a fantastic selection of restaurants and shopping, it’s a hidden gem for sure! And you’re right, the convenience of Charlotte, the mountains, and Asheville being just a short drive away really adds to the appeal. We love hearing from folks who’ve lived here and appreciate everything this area has going on! Feel free to share any favorite spots or memories-you never know who might be inspired to check them out! 🌄🍽
I love my State ❤️ NC
Us too ❤️
Yes: Sell, sell, sell. Marketing marketing, marketing. Low now, hype it up, in 10 years just another Florida that nobody will be able afford but at least some of us will get rich in the process, right??
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I understand your concerns about how real estate markets can change over time. Our goal is always to help buyers and sellers find what’s best for them in the current market, while being mindful of long-term impacts on communities. We’re passionate about working with families to make homeownership possible, not just about selling properties. If you ever have questions or would like to discuss more, we’re here to listen and help!
@@LifeInNC It's clearly just marketing rhetoric, and I understand. That's the way salespeople make their money. If it was for free, yes, that's help, but if you get payed for it, you can't call it help, that's a service for a fee, making money.
@@dorufodorean7535 Thanks for your follow-up! I completely understand your point-yes, real estate is a service, and like any professional, we do get paid for the work we do. But for us, it's more than just a transaction. We believe in helping families and individuals navigate one of the biggest decisions of their lives with care and transparency. Our goal is to ensure people feel confident and informed in their choices, whether they're buying, selling, or simply exploring their options. If we do a great job for our clients and help them achieve their goals, the success follows naturally. It’s always about building relationships first, not just closing deals. We appreciate your perspective and are always happy to have open, honest discussions!
We have lived in Austin Texas since 1996 and the growth (as everyone knows) has been massive for years and years. The cost of living here has also grown to the point where living here is not easy for young people trying to start their lives as adults. It has also become a place that is not attractive for many retirees. We will be coming to visit Hickory in the near future to see if it is a practical choice for retirement.
Thank you so much for watching our channel and for sharing your experience about Austin’s growth! We completely understand how rising costs can make it tough for both young people and retirees. Hickory offers a slower pace of life, a lower cost of living, and a welcoming community-so we hope it turns out to be a great fit for your retirement plans. We’d love to assist you when you visit and help you explore everything Hickory has to offer. Safe travels, and we look forward to hearing from you!
I moved to Hickory about 3 years ago from NJ. I left about 10 months ago for another NC city. There are NO 2 bedroom apartments for $700. There are 2 properties that offer a 2 bedroom, 700 sq ft for $950 month. My rent for a 2 bedroom/2 bath apartment was increasing $250 month for 2024. If you’re on a fixed income, then Hickory might NOT be for you. Aside from that, it’s a great town, has the major stores, a mall, restaurants & lots to do.
Thank you for sharing your experience and for watching our channel! We really appreciate your input. You're right that rental prices have been increasing, and it can be challenging for those on a fixed income. We try to stay up-to-date with local market conditions and always encourage viewers to double-check availability and pricing when considering a move. That said, we’re glad to hear you enjoyed Hickory overall and found it to be a great town with plenty to offer. If you ever have any more insights or questions, feel free to reach out. Thanks again!
17:45...Yes, you are correct that Alexander County is the next area for growth. A national builder just announced a new 495 housing unit development between Rink Dam Road and Lake Hickory.
You’re right! Big things happening “just across the bridge” ;-) thanks for watching - we appreciate your comment!
Just moved from NE Florida. Florida HOA $1,800/yr vs. $420/y in Hickory, joining beach/golf club $50,000 initiation and $950/mo dues vs. $2,000-$3,500 initiation in Hickory, house taxes $12,000/yr vs. $4,800 in Hickory, auto insurance $3,600/yr vs. $1,600 in Hickory, just the beginning and there are many more examples... Sold the 3,000 sq/ft house for two times the cost of a 5,500 sq/ft house in Hickory. Made the move to Hickory and putting $4,000/mo in my pocket. As military retiree, no state tax on my retirement. One shock was the initial auto registration in NC.
Wow! That is great info! Sounds like Hickory was a smart move! Thanks for your comment!
Live north east of Denver, CO and feel that cost of living here has skyrocketed over the last several years. Just paid $3.39 for gas, usually spend around $1700 on groceries a month (2 adults, 1 teenage boy), we commonly spend at least $800-$1000 eating out a month, we could easily rent our 3 bed / 2.5 bath, 1192 sq ft townhome for $2400 a month, but it’s the housing prices that are ridiculous! A new construction house that would be around $300,000 in Hickory would be at least $575,000-$600,000 here.
Wow, thanks for you comment. That does sound expensive. We just helped another family move here from Aurora, CO. Cost of living in Denver sounds very high! Reach out if you consider moving to Hickory, we’d love to help!
Gosh living here in NH is so much hiring in costs of living. We spend $7k in heating costs, $4-5k in electricity and $13k in property taxes alone.
@@OurRetireEarlyJourney Thanks for sharing your experiences! It’s eye-opening to hear how high the cost of living can be in different areas across the country, whether it’s Denver or New Hampshire. Every region has its challenges, and it sounds like both of you are feeling the impact. One of the reasons so many people are drawn to areas like Hickory, NC, is the more affordable cost of living, especially when it comes to housing and property taxes. If either of you ever considers making a move, feel free to reach out-we’d be happy to help you explore what North Carolina has to offer!
@@LifeInNC We actually visited NC to look to relocate. We ended up falling in love with a place in TN and are now building a house there. We are all about reducing our expenses in order to retire more comfortably.
@@OurRetireEarlyJourney That sounds amazing! TN is beautiful, and it's great to hear you're building your dream home. Wishing you all the best as you work toward a comfortable and early retirement! If you ever find yourselves in NC again, we'd love to hear about it.
Hickory, and the surrounding areas, has grown so much. I grew up in Granite Falls, and it's grown so much in the almost 20 years since the Walmart went up. I just hope this area, no matter how much it grows, retains its small town feel. I never plan to move away, this is where I'm born and raised. I consider Hickory my hometown as well.
We agree! Thanks for your comment :)
You people are idiots! Startown Rd. connects Lincolnton to Hickory. It doesn't go to Newton or Maiden directly. NC 10 does pass through Newton, not Maiden. Please study your maps before posting misleading videos.
Hospitals. Large airports. (1 flight not 2 /3. Walkable neighborhoods. Public transit. All must for retirement. Raleigh best so far.
Thanks for your comment! Yes, we love that we can fly non-stop from CLT to LAX!
Bingo! Startown is anything past Valley Hills Mall along Hwy 10, south of 64-70, down to Vale.
Very true! :)
