Just your friendly neighborhood groomer explaining the huge difference in dog grooming and hair dressing.
I started in January 2009. And I've been to 7 salons one 2 location hotel resort, 1 a vet hospital❤ & hotel. Now I am mobile grooming which I am LOVING ❤️. I worked at 2 locations at once loved both but had to choose between them they both wanted me full time.😮
Thank you Great video.
I loved working at Petsfart😅 great first introduction to Professional Grooming. Until I slipped and tore my ACL from a dog not liking being on a leash, walking then all of a sudden stop and trying to backout of the lead thrashing like a jerk. Jerked me sideways and hyperextended my leg to the left sounded like a tree branch..... 😢. Always wear good shoes.
I ultimately left because Dr. had me sitting 20% at work and they didn't like that.
It's nice that you have had that experience. That is a rare situation in other grooming salons.
I meant to say that comment is about how well you get along with the other groomers in the salon.
I’ve worked in a good amount of salons and never really had issues getting along besides one
I've been considering a career in dog grooming after being a stay at home mom. I really appreciate your honesty about the pros and cons. It's good to know when making such a big decision about a what career to choose. Thank you!
Do u recommend a book called notes from the grooming table ?
Thank you for this. I'm going for my 2nd interview tomorrow at a mobile groomer as an assistant/bather. I had my 1st interview today. Tomorrow will be driving to clients with the owners and be hands-on. These tips have helped me in preparing. Thank you!
I used to be a dog groomer and I dealt with this.
our grooming teachers said to NEVER use sedatives as a pet groomer. That ONLY vets should be allowed to do it, because it's too dangerous and could be lethal for the pet.
Thankyou so much for the informational.
Glad it was helpful!
You gave exactly the info I was looking for in your video! My 5 month old corgi is a sweetheart until it comes to brushing and trimming his nails. Never knew sedated grooming was an option, or that I could ask the vet for something to keep him calm for a grooming session. Don’t want to traumatize my pup or the groomers, and I don’t have the tools/experience to do everything needed at home. Great tips to build a healthy relationship with his future groomer! Thanks!
Don't do it. Sedation is risky. Only if u must, it shouldn't be a regular thing. You have a puppy. They usually get better with time and patience. Find a great groomer in your area
Good luck finding a groomer who accepts one with sedation, which she doesn't approve of in this video. Zero corporate places like Petsmart or Petco will not take your dog if you reveal it is sedated or even during check-in they figure it out.
I feel ALOT of people have no clue how hard groomers work...It destroys our bodies and is mentally demanding in ways they clearly have no clue about.Love your content, keep it up!!!
Thank you 🥰
Thank you for saying all the cons...I'm a dog groomer and have been since 2008 and people always think it must be easy..It is not...most of the time I am the only one doing st bernards, newfies ect and it kills my bosy.one thing that is true for me is my boss doesnt understand burnout or that she pushes us too hard so hard bosses and micromanagement can be a big deal too...thank you so much for this video and hope you are still enjoying this crazy ass career.
I enjoyed your video... You are so clear and I could understand I hope ppl will listen to you.
Thank you so much for this video. I've been thinking about dog grooming as a new career for a while now. I'm currently a preschool teacher in my 60's and thinking of retiring within a year or two. I'm in good health but dont know if I'm too old to consider dog grooming. I plan on applying to Petsmart as a dog bather and work part-time before making any commitment. Is 60 too old to start, or will I be perceived as too old by salons? I have no experience but am highly motivated and mature. Thank you.
No it’s never too old to start! I’ve been beginning groomers of all ages. Trust me you got this ❤️
Bless your heart, and as a very long time professional groomer, I love when the public gets educated
pro and con, working in a cooperate job vs mom and pop shop. where you go really matter with how you groom, what they allow you to do vs what another place would say. you said you couldn't sit down because work doesn't allow it when small shop get to sit while they groom. Dogs that bite, some will let you use a muzzle when other its against policy OMG customers with the "ThE oThEr SaLoN sAiD" "tHe OtHeR sAlOn DiD It LaSt tImEE" oh man if i had a penny for every time i heard that lol Amazing job, the fulfillment is pure and warm but without a good salon structure it can be hell
Great video, thank you 👍.
Grooming has made me detest dogs. How do I love them again?
Taking a break, going in a vacation, trying another field for a little. Groomer burnout is so tough :(
You got it girl.
Very smart girl I’ve been grooming for 18 years. You got this
Yeah if you don’t have cameras on you like some salons do or petsmart where the owners watch you
Good information I've been grooming 41 years love my job
PROS: •chill environment, work at own pace, chat with peers, bond •feels good when clients specifically ask for you •rewarding when you do a good job •commission (you make what you make), busy around holidays $$$, tips CONS: •commission (you make what you make), slow season, must work before holidays •must work weekends (busy) •rude customers, don’t understand you’re not going to hurt their dog so they can look a certain way, don’t know what they want, disrespectful, unfairly blamed for existing problems (skin irritation, cut) •Bad dog behavior (biting) •very physically demanding (lifting, twisting, experiences groomers can get carpal tunnel, bad job if you have physical limitations) •easy to accidentally cut dog (they’re moving targets), must be VERY careful •Burnout, patience runs out, dealing with rude customers TIPS: become dog bather before groomer, need PATIENCE
perfectly said
Thank you I’ve been interested in dog grooming for a while but I have lupus which causes joint and muscle pain so this video was very informative that it may not be the right choice for me.
