The Japanese version was what I grew up watching and I felt a part of me die when I first watched it lol. I wasn't able to process it at the time but now I'm an adult and in therapy I'm able to appreciate the truth that not all endings are happy.

I have another hypothesis (I won't call it a theory, because a theory would require closer examination). Makers of both versions were exposed to the same illustrations that more than a dozen illustrators inked over the previous 150 years or so. The scenes that were similar to each other are also similar to many storybook illustrations. Similarities in the storm scenes are especially striking.

I used to watch both versions as a kid. Most striking for me were the different versions of the sea witch. The Anime version could almost pass for an aquatic Maleficent.

The Disney version is fine for people looking for a "happy ending", but the Japanese version is a deeply metaphysical experience. I'll watch the anime version over and over, but I'll probably never watch the Disney version again.

Honestly, you can imagine what it’d be like if I made my own adaptation of The Little Mermaid but this time make it more comedic unlike the 70s version. When I meant like comedic I basically meant it like a Seth Rogen comedy and have the story set in modern day.

The Tokyo one is the best. Plenty of draping fabric and satin fabric to do amazing swirls and poses with.

I grew up on reading comics version of the tale where she turned into sea foam and got a eternal soul, it's was quite surprising watching watching the little mermaid when I was 12 or so. The plot and themes are so different.

The Japanese version is more accurate and also they give the author and his country (Denmark) credit where credit is due. Unlike Disney.

I wldve love to see a 1940s take on Disney mermaid with a sad ending and I think it wldve change endings for Disney forever. But I love both versions of this.

I think the 1968 animation is more similar to the one Disney followed, but i wouldn't be surprised if the took inspiration from all the available versions they had. For the 1968 version, the silhouette under the moonlight, and the transformation from mermaid to human come to mind.

I live the japanse version. Thars the movie i watched as a child. It broke my heart honestly
