I like to work on small engines, old cars and tractors in my spare time.

Found this old Cooper mower on market place. It hasn't run in several years and in this video I get it running for the first time in years. The original engine was replaced with a 1975 3.5hp Briggs and Stratton dual shaft engine. Parts used air filter #270579 carburetor diaphragm #391681 #firststart #willitstart #smallengine #smallenginerepair #willitrun #lawnmower #lawncare #briggsandstratton ...

That is so incredibly cool! What a simple and properly-sized design. Nothing like a garden tractor!
Glad you like it!
I'm not sure why they stopped making these wind up starter except maybe because they worked?
I think it was cost.
My father had a 49 pontiac 2 door coupe.😊
Those are cool cars I have a 51 Pontiac sedan
Very cool
Thanks

I love me a good sketchy tool but i think ill draw the line at this tool
Haha the Ole feet delete
@@SecondWindMechanical always wanted to go on disability lol
😂@@goshfather9024
I don't see a problem. There is even half a belt guard.
@@porkchop955 At least your fingers won't get caught in it 👍
I had a 1962 Biscayne 235 engine..3 speed manual tranny...bought it for $25 in 1973...drove it 5~6 years. Best 25 bucks I ever spent.
That's crazy how cheap that was back then.
Beautiful design of the cast deck! 💯👏👏
Thanks, it's cast magnesium.
It's silly that he went to all that time to beautifully restore the carburetor why not just take off the engine and restore it? I collect old lawn boy mowers and I beautifully restore them I don't leave one section undone. It looks silly big deal if it's running A professional should do at least the engine
I was just getting it running. There is always time to restore it once you get it running.
Runs and mows great! My folks had a Clinton mower back when i was a kid! A long time ago!
They are kinda hard to find now.
Love those Clinton engines,we had numerous ones when I was growing up, when I was in my late teens or early twenties I built one from parts from a couple of old ones and was so impressed by how well it cut tall grass, the governor would kick in until it was through then slow down, a contemporary B&S had to be ran at high speeds to do the same thing
You don't see that many Clintons they seem to be harder to find.
@SecondWindMechanical every once in awhile I see either one of those or the old Lauson engines but they're pretty pricey for my budget, I'd love to run across one though,I remember Dad fixed up a rototiller and was looking for an engine for it,he ended dealing with a neighbor who didn't like them and was putting a B&S engine on it,Dad got a complete 3.5 hp Clinton just for trading him a pulley for his engine 🤔
This is the only one I have seen here like this. I have three Clinton engines and this is the only on that runs.
@SecondWindMechanical we had another one just like yours,it was on a Montgomery Ward self propelled mower built by Dille and Maguire,it had the removable front piece in the front, after the mower died Dad converted it to a horizontal shift engine for the mini bike that he built for me in the early seventies.
@@rogercamp6071 This one has a removable front piece on the deck.
Keep up the work
Thanks
I was most impressed with how well that little engine handled that fairly tall grass also grass can get tougher in the late summer 😊
It does cut good with how small the blade is.
Geezum, I sure hope you checked the oil level before doing anything else. Certainly you did, but didn’t show it.
I changed the oil in it?
@@SecondWindMechanical Yes, I saw that. But I was referring to you starting it at the beginning of the video. And I surely would have disconnected the spark plug wire prior to removing the blade. Perhaps you did, and I missed it.
Boy, does that bring back childhood memories. These were sold in Western Autos, hardware, and local department stores for around $59.-$69. if I recall. Simplicity, longevity, and reliability at it's finest. Wish this was made still today.
I didn't know this was a Western Auto mower because there are no tags on the deck.
I think a number of department stores sold them under their store brand name. They were made by Clinton for different stores
Oh ok thanks for the information.
Did you pull the fan shroud off to make sure the cooling fins were not clogged with debris?
They were not you can hand crank the engine and feel air being pushed out.
and also add led substitute as when it was new that's the only fuel there was
Remember ethanol free fuel as ethanol will harm engine severly
Remind me of a old snapper push mower I used as a kid in the 70's on my grandma yard.
This one is unique
It runs incredibly smooth , no mechanical noise from the engine whatsoever.
It smokes alittle bit when it's first started but it's nothing to complain about.
@@SecondWindMechanical Be careful, the EPA, or some other bureaucratic agency will show up and fine you a couple million $$$ if they catch you using it...
I've seen a lot of old push mowers and I own a lot of old push mowers from 50s 60s 70s this is the first vertical shaft Clinton I've seen that wasn't just a picture.
I have three Clintons and this one is the only one that runs. One of the others is a 2 stroke vertical shaft push mower.
@@SecondWindMechanical I have two Jacobson 2 stroke turbo cut with the dish blade with the four points on it, one is a pull start and the other is a crank start.
I had to google a picture of one and those look like a neat mower.
Classy. Although there's a lot of negatives one could pin on the vintage cars........style was not one of them. It's great that we still have working examples.
It runs well. I like vintage equipment. I sometimes think it took MORE innovation before the electronic era.
Yes it does and vintage equipment is easy to work on and sis so simple.
🤨 ~ there wasn’t a lot of grass being blown out the hole in the side of the deck [mulcher mower] I assume the blades need to be slightly angled for the centrifugal fan effect of sucking the grass up and blowing it out?
It doesn't have a mulching blade it. The blade is flat on top.
Wonder if the exthaust is pointing the right direction.. seems funny having it pointing at the user for maximum noise
You know I don't know. I can't find any information on the mower. But I can find information on the engine.
It probably keeps the heat away from the intake manifold, probably some old guy messing around in the past.
Built back when a push mower was your primary source and you cut the entire lawn with it, it was built to last.
i had one similar
It's a good mower
That’s a hard pass
But it's fun to watch?
Looks dangerous.
Haha, just to your feet
the death saw
That's a good name for it.
Come in handy for protesters blocking roadways..
It would clear them out.
Went right to the comments. Good stuff!
They don't disappoint 😆
How many people lost legs to this thing?
The prosthetic leg business was booming when this was new.
Made back when people had the common sense to use a tool, without crying that it's scary.....
That's true 👍
Tell me again grandpa How did you lose your leg?.
Haha 😄
Great bit of kit for moving large crowds from behind
😆
Wow...I was 3 years old back then, but I never saw anything like that....what could go wrong ??
Get a peg leg
What could possibly go wrong 😅

On ne se préoccupait pas trop de la sécurité en 1950, par contre on fabriquait solide. Ma m;ere a toujours son réfrégirateur acheté en 1956, dans la remise. Il fonctionne encore et n'a JAMAIS brisé. Aujourd'hui quand tu parviens à faire 10 ans rtu es chanceux
Things were built different back then.
Man, I could use one of them. I've got a bunch of cedar trees in the pasture that I need to cut
I need to make a video of it cutting stuff.
Wow, so many uses
It can cut alot of different things
That may be hands down the most sketch piece of equipment I have ever seen 😮
And to think you could order and it could get shipped to your house.
@@SecondWindMechanical yeah, proves two things. 1-common sense was used to attempt to be safe at one point in time. 2-some of the safety standards and requirements of today that are needed, come from equipment like that 😆
That is a “ pup wood” length diminishing tool….
It could diminish alot of things
Safety is for other people.

Always best to wear bowling shoes when operating on hilly terrain with those machines.. The upside is if used often it should yield plenty of pegleg material...
This is some straight mad max stuff. I like it!
It's cool though
They didn’t have warning labels back then!!😂
No, you just became a peg leg
Hope he’s got his safety flip flops on.
I need some
Unfortunately, it costs an arm and a leg........ . to operate.
Hahaha
I think that was discontinued around the same time as jarts
