Colour Calibration in Your Lightroom Workflow
Thank you for a well explained tutorial. I found it very helpful
Glad to hear that!
Thanks for the useful info Mark. Quick Develop is something that I dont use but will now give it a go
Thanks. Have fun! :-)
I use one preset and change the amount every time. Nice solution to that. I found that using the exposure slider gets me less "natural" results than using the 4 other sliders (highlights, shadows, whites and blacks). I set them all to the same level (-40 for example) and find the result much more pleasing. Thank you for a great video!
Thanks. The good thing about this is that for your own presets, you can make any cocktail of changes and the same thing applies - roll over them to preview the change and click on the ones you want.
Thank you Mark …as usual very well explained and demonstrated . The benefit of being able to preview the effect by rolling over the presets is indeed useful . Thank you for supplying the presets for free and the work along download images . This video works very well alongside your others that go into masks in more detail …which are great .
Thank you
Who's a clever boy. That was the easiest download ever. I tried it within seconds on some flower images excellent results.
I think I might be LOL. Cheers, Mark
I thought I knew all about B&W, but I learned quite a few valuable tips. Great video, thanks, you've got a(nother) new follower!
I am really pleased you liked it and thanks for the subscribe :-)
I love it, what a treat. thank you ever so much.
You are so welcome!
nice one, thank you
No problem 👍
I really like your tutorials Mark. They are easy to follow, very informative and I always learn something new. Off to try out this technique. Thank you.
Kind of you to say so. Thank you.
Thanks a lot Mark, this is really a game changer to be able to do this in LightRoom
Thank you.
EXCELLENT tutorial Mark …extremely well explained and demonstrated and has given me a lot more confidence colour painting in LR.
Thank you. It can be quite relaxing wit hthe right image :-)
Thank you for this tutorial Mark. As pre usual easy to follow along with on the images you provided. Maybe it is because I have been following your YT’s for a good long while now on a work along basis that I find that I have built up a good retained knowledge of LR . As you know ..I very very rarely process in black and white . I too though have followed your lead of moving the calibration to the same position in the develop process …using it in this bnw showed it’s power as compared to saturation .
Thank you.
You are giving me hope with my editing. Cheers.
Thanks Sarah.
Well I learnt alot here. Tone curve rocks now 😆 Many thanks
It is very versatile. :-)
The problem with this method in practice is that it won't survive even the smallest modifications/compressions. I mean, you can pretty much apply some color filter by 0.001 percent, the image would look identical, but the watermark won't work. Uploading it to most websites would make the watermark ineffective. Good starting point though, this seems like a creative way to do it.
Thanks. Like I said at the close, this isn't how I invisibly mark my own work but it's good fun and something to play with... Hopefully it whets the appetite too to look in to stenography which, watermarks and images aside, is a very interesting topic, learning how files, message, images, or even videos, can all be hidden within other files, message, image, or videos :-)
Hi, for the Cragside picture, you use the escape key, what does that do compared to Ctrl X?
Esc just backs out of the crop tool on screen. Control X on a Mac, swaps the crop... If you had eg a crop landscape 6x4 (6 being the horizontal), this would swap to portrait orientaion 4x6 and back again if for Ctrl+X again.
@@MarkAHunter grand, thank you
I’m really enjoying your videos Mark, a great refresher since it’s been years since I’ve used LR/PS (albeit old versions), plus I’ve never been particularly great at it. Learning lots, thank you
Thank you.
I lived silver Efex, and I loved it, but it’s on my old desktop which has just died ☹️☹️☹️
That is a shame as it is great (as you know).
@@MarkAHunter gutted, I love B&W 🙁
Thank you 😊 Can you post the link or how you change the selection from red to pink please. I too, like your dad, like red dresses 🤣
As soon as you select a mask tool eg the brush the box that pops up has a small square in the bottom right corner, by default it will be red. When you click on it a colour change panel pops up, just select the colour you want from there. Good luck.
@@MarkAHunter thank you again 😁
Very useful. This will save me a lot of fiddling with the curve! Thanks Mark.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks again Mark, I’m working my way through your videos. A great refresher and I’m already learning things I didn’t know. What’s even more interesting is that you are using local landmarks and local places I’ve visited 😁
Glad to hear it.
Thanks for this Mark. Any chance of doing a video on how to upload photos to LR or PS without having them up in the cloud? And how to edit them keeping them on your hard drive?
I will put it on the todo list and also check back catalogue as I think I might have part of that already in one of my other videos.
Found it :-) This one shows inmport through to export: th-cam.com/video/WmIxKKLbZ84/w-d-xo.html
@@MarkAHunter thanks pet.
Yes, this is veru usefull tip, not mentioned from other authors and tuts about masking. 👌
Thanks
Thank you a million❤❤
You're welcome :-)
Great info here! Adobe's published Order of Develop Options workflow is 1) Denoising, 2) Healing/Spot Remove tools, 3) Lens Profile Corrections, 4) Profiles, 5) Global Adjustments [all normal edits to the photo from the edit modules], and lastly 6) Local Adjustments [masks, brushes]. So it makes sense that if you go out of order and do a Spot Heal (Step 2) on top of a Local Adjustment mask (Step 6), it will throw a flag. While the software needs to recalculate the AI mask for the newly added Spot Heal brush, performance is also improved by sticking to the workflow.
A good running order. :-)
Thank you! Quite frankly I’ve seen this red dot and never knew what meant. Mystery solved
Thanks
Brilliant, thanks. An annoyingly simple cure for what could be a big irritant, not know what the red dot meant.
Thanks
Thank you for another well explained and demonstrated video Mark. One thing I would like Adobe to do is to name the masks with the component right from the off rather than having to click the mask to see what the name of it is . Having watched and worked along with your previous YTs this one today is one that tells me ..yep ..I know about the masking and intersecting . Getting down to the detail demonstrates instances where it could be used more often . A thing that I noted was that on the 3rd image at the level of working at we can see the studio and the photographer reflected I here eyes ….that wouldn’t be visible at alternate viewing distances / image sizes . Would you ever work to remove the reflections ? Thanks
Thanks Graham. Auto labelling of the Ai masks by subject eyes, lips, etc is definately one for the Adobe wishlist. I have removed catchlight and reflected images from eyes previously but would go to Photoshop to do that and adding of catchingts too - possibly a tutorial idea!?
Really interesting method Mark 👌
Glad you think so!
Another great video Mark thanks 👍
Thanks 👍
thank you
You're welcome
It means you have entered Leica mode. 😀
:-)
Great technique, thanks
Thanks
Thanks for this video.
You're welcome
Nice and clear tutorial Mark 👌
Thanks 👍
Thanks I've seen the red dot but I had no idea what it meant
I had no idea either the first time I noticed it.
Even easier, one can update the AI mask by using a key stroke shortcut. On a PC, it is Control-Alt-U. There is no need to return to the masking area. (Probably similar on a Mac by using the appropriate key strokes)
That's not a keystroke I knew, must try it out.
Thank you... I have never noticed the 'red dot' before... what I did notice was that I could not use the healing brush or clone stamp in an area where I have used a mask??? but I am going to give this a try 🙂 P.S. I really do like the shorter TH-cams that quickly get to the point 😊
thanks
Thanks Mark, I've not had the red dot appear before, but I didn't know about the Update Mask option. I'll keep an eye out for it. I'm gonna subscribe, even if the algorithm was screwed by a supposedly short video. In fact, I prefer the short 5 mins tips & tricks videos, there is no need for bulking out a video to 10 mins just because.
thank you
I am very frustrated because my lightroom interface doesn’t show. all those clever options also for importting. And Lightroom cannot handle my Leica DNGs ! useless!
Are you on the same version (my version is listed in the video description) or are you useing Lightroom CC (th ecloud version) as it should look the same. Let me know if I can help.
Time to get smart and move to Capture One 😂
I dont like C1 myself, never really saw the advantage price wise over Adobe offering, but each to their own and whatever works best, go for it. .
Very clear and understandable ................. but - could you not just ignore the red dot and be content with the photo as it were before you updated the masks ? To me it seemed perfectly fine :-) Might be showing off my ignorance here, but if I am content with the situation, why should I let myself be dictated by Lightroom software ?
Good point and YES in the case of the picture I happened to use you could ignor ethe red dot. However, and I couldn't find an example to use in my photos, this can lead to 'patches' in say the sky or other items, where the clone/heal brush etc has been used. Most cases it might not be an issue but in some it can be; I was just pointing out that when it's red, you should check and how to repair. Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks Mark...fortunately I fall in to the camp of those who have already fallen foul of the red dot and haven't had it for good long while. A white dot also appears after selecting create mask and then doing something eg linear gradient . The white dot turning red when there is an ooopsy . All too easy to miss the red dot cos it is teeny tiny
Thanks.
Thank you Mark. Another great YT clearly explained and demonstrated. It was good to again go over the use of masks ‘ multiple mask together with the likes of intersect , density, subtract/add, feather and so on. Also …as particularly shown in the last image …great demonstration of your trick for accurate selections . I worked along with your provided images and it all worked for me.
Glad you enjoyed it
another great video Mark!
Cheers John.
Wow - that opened my eyes to some real possibilities. Thanks Mark!!
Thanks :-)
Great video. It is fantastic to compare an equalizer. That made a lot of sense with having a lot of points. Working without moving the whole curve. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this video demonstrating the power of subtract and invert to improve selections using the masks in LR or PS ACR . I downloaded the images and worked on them following the steps in your tutorial. I paid particular attention to the actual mask you selected when subtracting / inverting using the access on the right hand side rather than the universal invert at the bottom Certainly worked for me 👍👍👍
I should have called that out, but at least visual follow along shows it. Thanks.
Another great tutorial Mark, thankyou, John
Thanks John
Great video Mark. Love how you give us access to the sample pics so we can press pause and try the techniques out for ourselves. Far better than just watching someone do it on screen. Keep up the good work.
Thank you.
Very clear explanation, Mark ❤❤.
Glad you liked it.
