Episode 45: Tomas Haake (Meshuggah)
Episode 45 is with Tomas Haake of the Swedish band Meshuggah. This episode was recorded on the eve of the release of the bands latest album 'Immutable'. A fantastically beautiful, layered and crushing work of modern metal, that yet again proves them to be one of the most vital bands in the genre. Over the course of this conversation we discuss the writing and recording of the album during the pandemic, some of the dystopian themes covered in the lyrics, the idea that all great art has an ethereal nature that is hard to pinpoint, yet is easy to recognise when it resonates for some of us and also the hypnotic trancelike quality that I find the bands music to have. We also talk a little about the health issue Tomas has faced with a recurring hand injury as they were preparing to tour the album at the time of recording...
If you want to find out more about the band, the internet is right there. This is so important, to hear an actual member of that process, who was documented and to hear it from their memory, from their mouth, at least there’s a reference to fall back on. There’s so much speculation on social media and that’s how rumors and misrepresentation start, what nonsense for the most part.

Amor fati. Samsara is a thorn bush and we keep adjusting ourselves to find a more comfortable thorn. We fix one problem for another to arise in its place, never truly finding the root cause, which is our mind of ignorance, the "I don't know why I did that" mind. And so we're blown about by the winds of our karma, never truly feeling lasting, permanent happiness, mainly because we do not know the causes. So we eat better, jog a bit, listen to some good choonz, but it's all impermanence with nothing to grasp. The Wheel of Life is an artistic dipiction of the cycles of samsara with Buddha standing outside, pointing to the moon because he can show us the way out, but he can't actually liberate you, you have to do that yourself. If something is a true cause of happiness, the more we increase it the more happy we become. No amount of temporary relief, a chicken salad or spin class is going to do that. Only virtue, moral discipline, wisdom, patience, giving, love, compassion, bodhichitta, etc., can, bring lasting happiness but you can't sell books or run self help seminars on stuff like that. No one wants to here, "you may die today and your self important yet meaningless life has meant nothing for your future mental continuum's benefit, let alone anyone else's". We all wanna feel like special, unique little snowflakes who make a real difference by using your recyclable bag at Tesco. No one will remember who you are in a few decades, your body will rot and your thoughts will scatter to the wind. All the suffering you experienced will be for nothing, as will your paltry efforts to change the world, one meaningless vote at a time. Amor fati means not only accepting your fate, but truly, truly accepting that life is suffering in this thorn bush every moment of our self imputed existence. The only thing we can do, the ONLY thing we can do is leave seeds for future selves will will never encounter to experience the toil of our present efforts. Plant trees you will never taste the fruit of. Why? You can throw a spanner in the works of this miserable existence and leave gifts for those you will never meet. Now THAT'S extraordinary. Thanks for this talk, I wish I was there to interrupt ever 5 seconds with a didyehknow. Peace out neegrz ❤
