The Five Acre Farm
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 15 ม.ค. 2021
Hey y'all! Welcome to our channel. Thank you for joining along on our journey as we make our way from our beautiful two story home in the city to our dream home and homesteading farm in the country. There are a lot of "firsts" for our family and we are excited to share it all with you! Just in the past few months, we have sold our home, purchased and moved into a travel trailer, and purchased 5 acres of raw land that we are in the process of transforming into our small family farm. We hope that our channel can be an entertaining inspiration for everyone else out there to follow their dreams. We started out knowing absoluteley nothing about the rv life, the farm life, or the crazy roller coaster rides of selling and buying FSBO. But we sure are learning a lot that we can share with you and hopefully you can learn the rest with us along the way. Please help us out and show us some love by subscribing to our channel, hitting the bell, and sharing with others. God Bless!
Rotational paddock system | Electric fence rotational paddock for our pigs | Forest raised pig
Rotational paddock system for our pigs is finally under way! Now that our piglets are officially trained to a wire we are ready to start grazing them through a rotational paddock system. The goal is to have happy, healthy, forest raised pigs that help us to clear and improve our land. We are a little later than I wanted getting it finished because I had to do A LOT of research. There are a lot of nay sayers out there that say this will never work and to kiss my pigs goodbye. However, I am determined to give it a try. I pretty much had the basics down thanks to all of the incredible experts that I follow on youtube but I also had to make some stuff up 🤣😂🤣 The pigs couldn't be more happy with the rotational system so far. Just hope it continues to work out! Let me know what you think!

New farm animal update. We have added our next farm animal and we are super excited about it. I don't really want to give too much away here but if you know what a meishan is, now you know if you don't, watch the video to find out! We had to include a short clip of our spoiled pup because I am pretty sure he was drooling, HAHA! We are going to spend some time learning these guys before we add a...

Hatch Day. This was an exciting day! It just happens to be our luck that one of our wonderful neighbors is a professional when it comes to hatching birds as it used to be his thing. He would breed, hatch, and sell very expensive birds so he had to know what he was doing. All but one little hatchling had already hatched by the time we finished breakfast but we jumped into the golfcart as soon as...

DOT gravel for the RV PAD! This past weekend we officially completed all that needed to be completed to get our RV out on the property so we can increase momentum on our progress out there. This is going to save us a minimum of 2 hrs of driving everytime we have to go out there which is time that can be much better spent amending the land for the farm and building our new home. First Farm Animal Reveal! We are so excited to announce our first farm animal. It's not what I thought it would be before we purchased our property and it's not what I thought it would be after we purchased the property and I started doing some research. Raw Land. This is some footage that I came across that my Abigail did the day we were headed out to look at, what is now, our 5 acres. She is just too cute not to share her footage of our raw land! I also added in a peaceful walk from the front of the 5 acres to the back, some tracks located on the property behind ours, and then the walk back to the front of the property. This is going to serve...

Wish we got a part 2 in how you battled them 😢
That’s perfect. I have similar set ups for my hens hatching eggs. So the babies can’t escape. The bucket with nipple is a great idea
Wow
What a beautiful job you have done with these guineas! You are very blessed! Did you use anything special like a papoose to be near them when they were young? At what age did you start the imprinting?
I just bought some baby guineas today and want to raise them with my goats! I'm hoping the fowl will eat ticks and bugs so the ticks and bugs won't eat my goats!
Gift from God restaurants will pay top dollar for Huckleberry
I SO Love guinea fowl! I have a flock of 12 in their own huge cage/free-ranging, the bonded parent pair living with my chooks - and also free-ranging; one ridiculously friendly male who sleeps inside the house and seems to think I'm his girl, and 4 keets living in a brooder in the bathroom. There are definite differences in the sounds they make even this young (of course they are nothing like the adult noises), so I'm taking many videos/audios in the hope that they will yield clues as to the sex of each one once I can confirm who is what in a few more weeks. Most people would think they look the same, but a mother knows... Wondering if you noticed the different sounds they made when they were 3-4 weeks compared to 6 weeks?
Crazy GF's. I had two sweet, but silly cats. Id go out into the big yard we had, and they'd follow me. I'd wander to another part, and once they realized they were all alone, they come charging, eyes wide as saucers, ears flat, and tails bottlebrush! Daddy! DADDY! We got lost!!
Awesome!!! We're building our homestead in the NW Georgia mountains and being very careful about the mix of animals and plants we bring on the mountain. Ticks are a HUGE problem so we want to get Guineas as well as chickens but we want them to be safe from the various predators we share our isolated mountain top home with. Knowing that imprinting can work with them makes me feel much better about bringing them on the farm. Thanks so much!
That's awesome! I wish you the best of luck :-)
@@thefiveacrefarmfamily Our 16 "assorted, fancy" keets arrived 5/30 and they're all doing great!!! We believe they have 1 shared brain cell between them, which could explain them tearing across the brooder box and jumping straight up for no apparent reason. We visit with them frequently during the day and evening and they come over to see the "big heads" talking and cheeping at them but when we handle them several times a day to change their bedding (paper towels for the next few weeks) they run in terror from the "big, bad hands." Today I gave them a tick that I found crawling on me (EWWWW) after I squished it and once one started pecking at it, 2 others joined in and their was a 3-way tussle for it - GOOD KEETS!!! They'll be moving to a large enclosure for the "training" sessions then they'll have free-reign during the day to be the tick slayers nature has made them and be in the safety of their coop at night. Trail cams have showed us the predators we share our mountaintop home and orchards with so we'll be bringing them into the coop at night so we can all sleep soundly. It's going to be the Taj Mahal of Guinea coops according to the Hubster. This video gives me confidence we can get them trained and next year we'll still have most or all of them. I'm trying so hard not to get attached to them but they're so cute at this age! I've decided not to name them so they'll have a better chance of survival (Murphy of Murphy's Law messed with us when we were full-time RVing for 2.5 years and I'm afraid he came with us to the mountain hiding in the black tank!) Any advice for a couple of Guinea newbies? I grew up with the chickens and peafowl on my aunt and uncles' respective farms but none kept Guineas. Thanks!
But that cage is extremely small for that number of keets
Yes, they were beyond ready for the coop at this point. We had them at the camp site with us and moved them around the grounds regularly to compensate for space and give them fresh grounds. It worked out great!
Is the sound the only way to tell the difference?
I personally can also tell the difference in their wattles as the males have larger darker wattles and the females are smaller, and I also can tell the difference in their stance/temperament. Males are more sporadic in their movements whereas the females are slower and more dainty in my opinion.
Outstanding 👏 👏
Thank you!
I noticed females are bigger than males on average, and they walk from whole foot, males step on toes like ballerina.
Fantastic job!!!!
Thank you!
Can you plant right in the mulch after you do the forestry mulching or what do you recommend? We had 2 acres mulched and I do have a lot of fruit trees to plant… should we ask him to remove the roots where we intend it plant or leave it as is ? I’m a little confused on this part and no TH-cam videos on it.
This is a great question!! Definitely would require another video for a detailed answer. My first question would be what type of plants exited before the mulching.
@@thefiveacrefarmfamily Mostly saw palmetto and wild grape vines EVERYWHERE.... it would be WONDERFUL to a video on it because I'm sure I'm not the only one with this question :)) Lovely channel BTW! Thank you so much for your help and input.
@@MelDormoy we did end up having atleast 75% of the palmetto removed after we gave some time (a little over a year) for the mulch to break down and ammend the soil. We grazed sheep on all of the new growth and they loved the fresh palmetto and completely cleared the wild grape vine. They helped to keep the growth down and contributed to amending the soil quite a bit :-) The palmetto will grow back. So you can go ahead and start planting and dig up the ones that are in your way for now, then keep an eye and dig up the ones that start popping up too close to your other plants. This is not an easy task, it will be the most labor intensive but least disturbing method of your land. We ended up having too many palmetto, so dense that the competition was too strong as far as the root system.
@@thefiveacrefarmfamily Wonderful advice and so GOOD TO KNOW! I've been waiting on the clearing company for months and finally they arrived and believe it or not, we are actually able to SEE our 3.5 acres for the FIRST TIME (1.5 acres of it is native FL forest but walkable pretty much). I personally think the saw palmetto is beautiful but when there's so much of it, along with carrotwoods and pepper trees... it doesn't make your land usable in any way and crowds out the oaks and pines that are native. It's a bit overwhelming to see the transformation personally, but exciting too - now we see more than 20 feet around the house! :) The sheep cleared the wild grape vine??? WOW! Truly amazing. I truly appreciate your help... I had always dreamed of having land and finally got it (even if it was all wild and crazy) and now trying to navigate the process... it is reassuring to watch these videos and have your guidance. Thank you again!

Hi you got some cute piggies. Looks like you got it going on. I hope you have a great day. Lisa at #moneypithomestead
Thank you! It's been working put really well so far. I was told "DON'T DO IT. YOU'LL LOSE THEM ALL". So every day I go out anticipating piggies on the run 🤣
That was a nice walk in the woods. Thanks and Congratulations on your new begining,
Thank you so much! It's a process but we are making a little but here and there 🥰
I'm glad I stumble on your video because I will be buying some land in the future and I didn't know about any of what you said. I knew about any land restrictions. Is that the same thing? That you for that Information.
Land restrictions is definitely a biggie! We wanted to be able to farm and to allowed to live in our camper on our property while we build, which they don't allow everywhere, so that was important for us to ask!
Great job in getting them to hear and follow you. How early did you start the imprinting with the keets?
Thank you! We raised them from 2 days old and spent time with them everyday. Never forced ourselves on them holding them or touching them if they were too finicky about it, which I think helped. We were intentional to he with them but careful to not stress them out
I'm so excited for y'all! Can't wait to see how much the land changes over the next couple of years!
Very innovative! 👏🏿 We rotate using Premier One fencing with a solar charger. Super easy to move and electrical "installation" is EASSSY. Bulletproof system so far too. Beautiful pigs! That being said, I just ran a 3 strand electrical pasture for our new cows we just got. Best of luck! 🙂
I would love to be able to do that but they are a little pricey for us right now. Hoping some time in the future! I am sure it would make life so much easier! Lol
So cool! Have 6 myself but they dont follow me like yours do. Can you hold them? Mine freak out while trying to handle them. Also do you clip their wings? Thanks
We have added a second flock and now have 32 of them! Lol We can hold them sometimes, they decide when they are in the mood. I am thankful that they do because one of them was attacked by something and required care and we were able to care for his wounds. Otherwise he would have most likely died. We do not clip their wings. We want them to be able to get away when a predator comes for them.
Mine only like being held ...like perched with your arm extended...and their feet on your arm
Pearl gray! They really look nice
Hey Shannon, can you make a video on the process of sell by owners of the house and also, from where did you get your camper. We also live in central florida, but may be moving to another state and are looking into moving into a camper as well. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated 🥰
I definitely can! I'll work on that right away :-)
Cute, kids were so excited. You all have a super fun day, lisa@moneypit homestead
They were! They love the pigs but they are so rowdy only the older two can really handle it. Like puppies wanting to chew on every thing and every limb 🤣 Hoping they chill a little bit for sure!
Yes, I am aware that I mistakenly revealed a little too soon. Haha! Oops! If I had internet, I would rearrange some frames but it took about a week for this to upload in bits and pieces whenever we weren't home so it is what it is I guess.
OMG so cute! Without knowing that, our guinea fowls have imprinted my husband, they follow him everywhere! Amazing video, just subscribed =) I invite you to see my small farm in Brazil =).
Thank you! I look forward to checking out your channel as well!
Hatching never gets old!
This was our first time but I couldn't totally get hooked and start my own hatchery! Lol
Do you plan for them to have a bog or a swimming pool?
No, that makes quite a mess of the land and we want to use them to help improve it. We plan to rotate them out on the pasture which has lots of trees and shade.
They are so cute!
Thank you! 🥰
Hello, enjoyed your video thanks for sharing have a beautiful day, lisa@moneypit homestead
Hey Lisa! Thank you for watching and the kind comment 🥰
We got our guinea fowl kits just 2 days ago.. they are so cute birds
Good luck with them!!

Looks like they all love it !
The guineas are quite the clean up crew! Lol
The Guineas eat more than our chickens and ducks @@thefiveacrefarmfamily !
@@thefiveacrefarmfamily what mineral block did you use?
@@kenbaker2229 it was a Dumor Sheep and Goat block. We have since switched them to a the powder mineral for sheep.
Thank you for the info , I’m thankful we have both sounds in our flock of 8 !
That is great!!! We ended up with 5 males and 5 females but sadly one of our females was snatched up by a hawk right behind my back when we first moved them to the farm :-(
😪@@thefiveacrefarmfamily we lost a polish hen named Polly to what we suspect was an ariel predator also and our cat was attacked by something too . She (cat) ended up surviving the attack but half of her tail was broken and eventually fell off . Poor thing won't go outside the pole barn anymore 🥺 .
@@BornAgainFarmGirl that is so sad :-( poor kitty :-(
@@thefiveacrefarmfamily yeah it was and is sad cause she’s still shook .
So exciting! I know y'all are thrilled to see it coming together 😊 (He did look like he was having fun🤣)
We are! I think we will really be able to gain momentum once we are out on the property. We are giving up some huge luxuries moving out there, like a laundry mat and a pool (in the dead heat of summer) but sacrifices have to be made! 🤣😁
@@thefiveacrefarmfamily we did the same, our house in town is about 25 minutes away, but moving out to the property and staying in our travel trailer has really helped to get more things done! And it really works out... Since we decided to give our house to our adult kids, we just drop out laundry off with them 🤣
@@HomesteadFresh well that works out well!! Lol
Wow what a process. Congratulations. Ant wait to watch your progress.
It has definitely been a process! We have learned a lot already.
Lol, "Trouble." Great name! Great neighbors too. I'd send them some sort of thank you goodie, food you don't have to cook yourself covers a multitude of sins! Congratulations! That's an interesting choice for first farm animals, you dived right in- go you!!
Lol, thanks! That is a great idea to make a thank you goodie!!
Why do I get nervous seeing other people's kids jump over stuff but not my own?! 😂
🤣😂😂 My kids make everyone nervous 🤣😂😂
We are only a trailer rental away from moving!! We also built a floor for our shed which we do have to transfer from the campsite to the property. We would LOVE to hear from those who have "been there, done that" for any do/don't advice. We have an 8 x 10 metal shed.
Awesome!
Thanks! :-)
Awesome! I love sheep! Keeping a ram would be cool, the only thing cuter than sheep is baby sheep. Never take your eyes off the ram though, no matter how much you trust him, at some point he will try to push you around. The two problems we had with sheep were parasites and predators. Sounds like you are all over the parasite issue though, but don't be afraid to worm them if they need it, and if they still don't seem right, try a different wormer. We used a produce store recommended wormer and it did nothing, confirmed by egg count through our vet, but the second wormer sorted them out. The other issue, and the reason we don't have sheep for now, was stray dogs that killed a few of our sheep. Hard to keep those mongrels out without using a dog wire fence and maybe a guardian dog. Hopefully you don't have that issue in your area. Just a couple things to be aware of and maybe take precautions for. Enjoy them, I miss my sheep.
We have friends that had issues with stray dogs. They got their goats and their calves. It was so sad :-( We don't have them where we are that I know of. On the parasites, I have been looking in to adding diatomaceous earth to their diet. Have you heard anything about that?
The person that we purchased the sheep from warned us about rams! He said it's best to not get friendly with them at all. He also gave us a tip about flipping them over their backs while they are young to establish dominance.
@@thefiveacrefarmfamily we never tied diatomaceous earth but I know some people swear by it. If you can be dilligent with moving your sheep to new ground every day then I'd say it would help for sure. We found it too much work to move them daily so often they were on the same ground for a few days, which isn't great for worm management, and we had to drench them in the end. It's devastating to find your animals killed by any predator, but when you know it's a feral animal that was probably an unloved pet, I think it feels worse.
@@thefiveacrefarmfamily our ram and I used to have frequent wrestling matches, I always made sure I won, but it never stopped him from trying to butt me. He was an adult when we got him though, so that might make a difference.
@@DuckPondsFarm we do plan on trying to move them regularly once we get the right set up. For now they just have plenty of tall plants that I am hoping will keep them from eating off of the ground. And I agree with the dogs. When an animal comes to kill just for sport, it is south harder to deal.
Love the kids view!
It's the greatest!
