SA. 9: Bloody History, Twisty Roads and Drakensberg Scenic Bliss - South Africa Motorcycle Ride
Join me for Day 9 of our South Africa motorcycle adventure as we explore historical battlefields, conquer stunning mountain passes, and enjoy local brews! We start our day in Dundee and head to the Bloed Rivier Monument, a site of historical significance between Dutch immigrants and the Zulu tribe. We then embark on an incredible ride through the Drakensberg Mountain range, taking in breathtaking views and tackling some exciting twisty roads. We even spot some unfortunate cars that didn't quite make the turns! Our journey takes us through the Golden Gate Highlands National Park (South Africa's version!) and culminates in the charming town of Clarens, where a well-deserved brewery stop awaits. It was a 300-mile day filled with history, stunning scenery, and great riding. Don't miss it!

Love the long rides on nice open roads with minimal traffic. It's just an impossible dream here in India. Do share some details about the camera you are using and how you control it so well while riding at such speeds.
I am using Insta360 and it is mounted in the front. It captures 360 video, so I have convert it into standard video format for TH-cam and during that process I also select the angle I want to show. It is time consuming process.
Visiting Mandela museum was not part of the original itinerary. I am so glad that we added that to the trip because it was a very emotional and touching experience for me.

Excellent once again. Especially Hippos mowing lawns for free 😃 or maybe that is their form of territory marking. "You hoomans may have parked yourself here but this territory belongs to me" 😄
You are absolutely right - hippos were there first. Good thing is that the city enforces that people can only have the native grass that hippos eat (and not the modern turf we commonly plant).

An interesting fact I learned about hippos that they are not good swimmers. They gallop in the water and push themselves to the top to breathe. Who would have thought that an animal that spends most of its time in water doesn't know how to swim?

It was a warm rain like monsoon so it was not as bad. It was just a lot of it.

Despite the rain, it was an amazing experience. One of the lessons learned for me is to carry the outer rain gear. And better rain gloves :)
How do you prepare for riding in the rain? Any gear advice, especially gloves?
Interesting fact I learned as to why animals don’t attack people on safari - animals identify objects by profile and the profile of vehicles are too big and unfamiliar. That said, they will attack if provoked.
Exciting journey. Surprised to see that animals with small babies were not bothered with human presence. Waiting to see more
I was surprised as well. Especially the elephants and buffalos. Maybe they've gotten used to of humans/cars. There were a lot of babies already but I was told now that it rained, there will be flood of babies within a week. The landscape becomes lush green, which also makes it harder to spot animals.

Good one Jag. In some clips I saw speed indicated, that would be a good addition to all the driving clips. So you are just 3 riders with one guide/leader and one backup guy with a spare motorbike !! Must be a damn expensive plan 😀
My GPS tracker unfortunately was not very reliable. It captured some stats at times and other times it didn't record anything. Maybe a user issue. Something to work on for the next time.
