Nice video, my Lord.
can you drink the vodka thats been used to soak the horns?
I didn't. I wouldn't reccomend - only drink from the horn once it has been cured with bees wax or similar.
half way in between a fighting axe and a splitting axe
Yeah, this one could certainly be used for camp craft - I'd really like to know more about the origional.
The chance you could damage proper metal armor with something like that is still questionable, though part of that depends on the quality of steel used for a given armor set. The knees would be very risky to go for since you'd leave your head exposed and the weapon doesn't have much reach. That said, one solid blow to the head would certainly cause a concussion, whether you broke the helmet or not.
Shoulders, elbows, the sternum, back and knees would be very vulnerable to concussive force from something like this.
thank you. just got a new longbow starter kit from Fairbow shipped from the Netherlands and needed to see how it's done. some people are using something called the step through method but that seems to be better to use on an american longbow than an english longbow.
The bow stringer is much kinder to the bow, especially for heavier draw bows.
Was there a historical find you based this upon?
No, not specifically. This isn't a reproduction - rather a piece of wooden furniture using no modern joinery techniques that could quite easily be achieved in the medieval period. There are illustrations that show a similar style of bench seat - but without enough detail to clearly define the components and assembly.
@@Medieval_Mayhem - understood, and thanks!
You should have explained the content rather than talking about biases and all
Thanks. This video was designed as a response to a lot of online chatter at the time about the AS chronicles.
Would they not notch the wooden so it's flush?
I chose not to. You could of course, just as you could put a hole in the upright for the cross bar to go through.
Ty.
Thanks
Was looking for a tutorial to make this bag for my wife's birthday. Such a great video! Thank you friend
You’re welcome 😊
It still going strong?
Yeah, I use my own one of these often enough - does have marks in it from use as I sometimes do sparing with it. Not so many of these around these days. Unsure if cold steel is still producing them.
It would have been useful for landscaping due to its thick hatchet point blade, which is very similar to that of Latin machetes, which are very useful in clearing thick branches, shrubs, and rushes. Some falchions have clip points similar to long Bowie knives.
True. Quite a few differet types of falchions around.
Roughly what time frame was it usedd though? 🤔 the obvious answer is since they invented large mallets, but.. what do we have proof of i wonder
There are mentions of mauls in various texts, spelling and translation vary so it isn't super clear as to exactly when a tool like this was first used as a weapon. But I imagine it could have been quite effective.
I'm a bit suprised youinstalled the belt end before you dyed the leather. 🤔
Fair, And to get a better dye affect I should have dyed the leather first.
I like these things! Very cool.
Thanks so much
Well, the reason mayl is underrepresented is because there isn't much information about it as a weapon.
Fair comment, contempoary history was written about those who could pay for someone to record it. And weapons of the common folk didn't get much attention.
Harrold's body was identified on the battlefield at Hastings by his tattoos.
That's a theory. His wife, Edith Swan neck is said to have identified him by marks only a lover would know. So equally could have been scars or birthmarks or even love bites.
@@Medieval_Mayhem I have read this but find it hard to believe Edith was anywhere near the battlefield, the wives of other nobles on the battlefield were in London and on hearing of the defeat were taken to Chester.
@@hetrodoxlysonov-wh9oo impossible to know for sure. Most of what is "known" about Hastings is Norman propoganda or at least biased. There's a book called House of Godwin which is probably the least biased account and balances the narative from the Saxon account.
My worst experience on leaving the ADF is dealing with DVA. Frankly it has been a most stressful period from an organisation which purportedly is there to help veterans.
I hear you. My own experience with DVA is similar. Lots and lots of fighting for what a veteran should be entitled to. The Royal Commission has a way to go yet, but DVA was deemed unfit for purpose years ago.
How is using screwed in hinges fit for reannactment?! Screws, especially philip's head screws are completely ahistorical for a Norman chest. You should have used either nails or rivets for installing hinges
Yes, agreed. I think I said in the video (which is quite an old video now) that I was unable to source period fastenings and was using screws as a tempoary measure.
Is the "hoist" the horizontal bar that holds up the banner? Can't seem to find the technical terminology. Thanks
Yeah pretty much. I'm not an expert on the terminology for that either. Good question though.
Only person I've heard say the evolution of seax but that's what Ive been thinking
Thanks, it's a theory anyway.
Yes, a beautiful Viking bed, but it is mostly made for a permanent camp, like a medieval village! it would be too inconvenient to dismantle and reassemble it to put it in a Viking tent for wandering re-enactments, precisely because of the weaves!
Thanks. It'd be a high status item. There's plenty of evidence for large long-term Norse encampments during the great heathen army etc and seige of paris. And for the senior and high status people would have quite a lot of furniture and chests etc in their tents - maybe tapestries etc as well. Similar to what the Romans did.
You deserve far more likes for this video. This is an important step towards making clothing approachable for a new reenactor or just someone trying to curb their spending on their medievalist hobby. Good on you, mate, for being a single, working dad as well.
Thank you. Yeah, the concept of the chanel is a central hub for re-enactors to get simple how-to videos, but despitge a lot of effort, I've really not been able to gain a whole lot of traction.
Always wanted to go to Oz. Not so sure now. Those birds would get right on my tits.
Bahahahaha, yeah - it can be like that here. Lots of wildlife everywhere.
Do i cut the 2 long parts more if it's too loose? So that the straps go more through the eyes making it tighter
The belt section that I made was comprised of two sections. One is shorter which has the two holes. The second is split like a forked tongue. I made this maybe 40-50cm longer than I needed to as I may wear it over winter clothes etc and it is always easier to cut down than to make bigger.
@@Medieval_Mayhem thanks yeah i cut the leather more now it fits. just felt wrong buying a sword then cutting it, but thank you
Awesome piece, I might need to get one!
It's a great piece. I've found them hard to find online these days, but if you can find one - I'd purchase it.
You suck
Wait. You aren't in sw western australia by any chance?
Where did you get the dragon design? Is there a good source for norman shield designs? Books? Great video!
Thanks. I drew the dragon myself. There are no remaining Norman shields to my knowledge, so what knowledge we have are from descriptions and art work. I used a commercially available shield blank and made my own shield.
I *would* like a how-to!
your kid is so cool! <3
Thank you so much.
another amazing video!
Thanks again! Really appreciate it
Never knew that about butler and a Butt... Butte? that's so cool
Cheers
Great video! Love your dediation and interest! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! Glad you appreciated it
Talk too long. Don't make any sense
when you have to create your character 1:15
As a reenactor I mainly this weapon and it's so effective for two handed weapons battles and against shields one of if not my favourite weapon
Absolutly agree, the spear is a great weapon.
Fuck I wish you released this before I discharged in 2011 mate... It's nice to hear it from a fellow soldier instead of their transition seminars and the like. I am only just NOW trying to deal with all this crap, because things were so hectic when I got out.
I didn't get a copy of my med docs hahaha, I booked and appointment and walked out with the originals on the day I discharged.
Aye you mention Brisbane and Straddy, were you 7 Brigade?
I'm in Brisbane
It's a difficult process, getting out. And it's very important to get a plan in place for when you do discharge. Maybe try to connect with RSL, mates4mates, GO2 health or soldieron - or even Swiss8 as veterans organisations.
DVA will still have their own copy from centeral medical records in Canberra. But - so important to have your medical doccuments.
Man. I like the part about using the sword and shield🔥🔥
Thanks
If the bow is big and powerful and so the Crescent shape arrow then it can sure behead a man. In the Indian ancient text Mahabharata mentions a war were warriors used crescent shape arrows to cut off arms and heads of their enemies. It's a mythical war fought by super warriors who used giant bows and arrows. But it can be possible if the scale of bow and arrow is big
I wanna know how to build it
Ha - I might do a how to build video. Soon.
I need a set of bellows. I have forged all of my tools anvil hammer tongs and a bick. I don’t know why building a set of bellows is so intimidating.
It's a little tricky to get the shape of the leather skirt right, but once you do that it's all pretty straight forward.
King of westero
Ha - just king of my own house.
Sweet!
Thankyou.

Thank you. I'll try to get some more videos out soon.

Thank you so much! 😊
Thank you for this informative video. He was referenced in a Marple episode from 2004, "What Mrs. McGillicuddy Saw" (AKA "4:50 from Paddington"). It was in a conversation between Luther Crackenthorpe (David Warner) and Lucy Eyelesbarrow (Amanda Holden). Luther was wondering where he had heard the name Eyelesbarrow and Lucy suggested it might have been from the book "Hereward the Wake".
Hereward was a true English hero who deserves a lot more recognition. I didn't know that about the maple episode.
I'm not a woodworker and I'm not good at following youtube videos. do you have any kind of cut list for this? I want a shelf like this but can't find a pdf tutorial for one so this is the best i've got for reference for now.
