I believe that only the Father is God and that Jesus is God’s Son. 1 Corinthians 8:6 states, “For us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.” Only the Father is referred to as Almighty God in the Bible and he is identified by the name Jehovah. (Psalm 83:18) God is the one who raised Jesus from the dead, exalted him, and made him Lord (Acts 2:32-36), giving him all authority in heaven and on earth. (Matthew 28:18) When Jesus asked Peter in Matthew 16:15, “Who do you say I am?”, Peter correctly answered in verse 16: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” There are no scriptures in the Bible that say that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are all coequal, coeternal and all are of the same substance and that all three make up one God.

Thank you for this outstanding and thoroughly biblical explanation of the Trinity. I call the one substance - three persons teaching of the early church fathers ‘chewing gum theology.’ You mentioned in the intro that you weren’t going to dance (or something similar). The recent metaphor of a dance (perichoresis) undermines the ‘one substance’ understanding of the Trinity. I’ll be referring my congregation to this excellent teaching.
